Now this is getting me pumped up. The web girl just signed me into 'Google My Business' 2 days ago. This opens me up to more exposure some how. This has never happened, Etsy traffic from my website. (the website refers clients to Etsy for E-commerce). The machine is coming alive. 12 inflows from firepitsatlanta.com traffic just yesterday when she signed me up. Rutrow, may be time to get real busy. These are productive in flows.

Note: Title tags are about useless unless they are in the 13 tags at bottom of your listing.

3rd weekend in a row with record views. The purple line(listing views) averaged 75 in 2016. Also 2017. Looks like 120 is new average. Sales still proportionate to views. I am renewing all 20 ads on Friday @ total cost of $4. Have cut back promoted listing payments to $2/day @ 10 cents per click. April and May is normally flat. Still sold on Marmalead application. My wife's shop of mixed products is experiencing similar results after application. She canned a lot of tag words and has rebuilt her tags on the Marmalead grading system. It took her a long time to redo her varied listings. But her tag pool is improved and reusable with not much future effort.

When I had my knife sharpener biz and inventory actually on hand (shitty vendor) I ran Google AdWords. Kind of an amazing thing happened. I had a similar budget $10/day and when I started I paid $0.55/click but wasn't spending my budget due to low click thru rate.
I learned to A/B test and ran my click thru rate up to 11%. Google rewards you for high click rate. So my cost went as low as 22¢. I spent my budget and sold out of Sharpeners in days.
I'd literally be a millionaire if the friggin mfg got their shit together. They only had enough capital to buy 100 kits at a time. They denied my order for 288! Losers are still scraping the barrel. I sold 15-20 kits a day at $450/kit. When I had them. About every 60 days. Ughhh

Ughhh What is A/B test ? Click rate and ads and cost per click messes me up. Next subject to learn. 20 kits at $450 !! $4.50 or $450 ? That's too much money lol. Shame you could not have that kit manufactured. Guess you thought about it. And just to injection mold a part starts at $40,000. Manufacturing is expensive. That experience would be a heart breaker. I tell you what is weird(or frightening). My website only get 15 visits a day. So few. A small percentage of Etsy visits. Like 2-5%. But a third of sales. And most of the sales are within 70 miles of Boston go figure. No idea why. But What is the potential ? Unfortunately fire pits are heavy and awkward. I wish I had a small widget. The widget means nothing, the fascination of internet sales blows me away.

A/B test is simple.
You run two ads simultaneously. Different wording.
A) sharp knives for life & safety
B) make your knives dangerously sharp
Guess which one had the 11% click thru rate?
Run the race a few days. Take the winner and run a new race with a challenger. Keep at it to tune the ad for maximum efficiency. Google charges you less and gives better position for higher click rate. I was #1 always on the ads. Strangely 😉 I was also number one organically.
Yes $450.00/kit
I looked into mfg and almost had $2,000,000 lined up. The money guy wouldn't sign an agreement and I got worried he would steal my product. Ruined it for me. My vendor didn't even have a barcode on his product. Therefore cannot get into Cabelas or Bass Pro. Two obvious retailers for this tool. Check out "The Wicked Edge" knife sharpener.
ETA yes it broke my heart. Right product wrong vendor. 2x in my life I had this problem.
I helped a buddy sell "Fly by night kite lights" back in the eighties. He asked me to work a trade show booth. I took orders for over 200 dozen. By lunch the first day. No deposits, just commitment. He asked me "are you crazy? I can't make 2500 units in a year." To which I replied "why are we here". I lost a friend over this. He was too embarrassed to stay buddies.

I lost a friend over this. He was too embarrassed to stay buddies. Your above story is sad. It bothers me. I fear too much almost as much as too little. You can always turn a website off though. The political arrangement you faced would raise my anxiety too. I like my security level though it is not near as a potential money maker as your situation lest I hired help. Really trying to keep it low profile and metered for my lifestyle. Almost where I want it. That Wicked edge is a mean sharpening device. super sharp knives are rare around here. Looks like real quality, I see why you pursued it. Again, I do like manufacturing my own product. It is fairly safe. People do funny stuff over money. Lots of money made backstabbing. No pride in screwing people. My friend Steve is an electrical engineer and makes the finest products as a contractor. Makes his clients fortunes. He is anti marketing. Hates sales. Has let so many royalties slip thru his hands. Angers me. They take advantage of him. If he just asked for 1% he would be wealthy many times over. Some of them would have allowed a royalty, sure of it. I will guess B) was the home run. Thanks for the explanations. I do pay attention. I like the test. Nothing like real world test. Vendors. Yes, one of the biggest concerns. Plants were easy other than competition from other growers and price cutting. Hard goods another animal. My plant biz is failing this year because one of my long time competitors is price cutting lower than I care to grow. First year in 26 years. I hope this Charleston Aquatic Nurserie's plants can handle our cooler Atlanta weather. Their exotics do well on the coast. Seen this cycle over and over(fancy plants that are sold in the wrong habitat). Easy temptation. Then the customers start complaining. Ole Jim will bale them out next year. I know my clients will have some problems but they are the ones saving a dollar here and there. Allowing an employee do the purchasing. I will not be sympathetic after throwing away all the stock I grew for them. I have my pits now. I'll drop that plant biz in a New York. Don't F with me in this area. I am very loyal. Know my stuff and client's well being. I am heart broken but also very happy. I have a contract on Lake George property. Property is finally moving after 8 years. the income from that sale will change our financial status. Like retirement. That is one of the most primeval places I have ever been on Mother Earth. Mammals to moccasins, never a dull moment. Wicked weather. Crazy ass people. I am anxious to have my springs and early summers back after 26 years. Long hours doing plants at that time. The pits are easy and passive.

Wicked Edge isn't patented and is the best sharpening system in the world. No competition at all.
I wonder if they have a barcode yet. Lol
Sad about the plants. Happy about the Lake George property. Did you retain your little camp?
Good you can have spring free!! Woot!! Will you still do small qty of stuff for fun? Serracenia?
Congratulations on preparing well for retirement!! Woot!!

Had I played my cards right in 2007 I would have long been retired. Lots of real estate war stories back at that time. When I was old enough to drive I found a site where some electrical company had left thousands of ceramic(aluminum oxide) pipes about 8 inches long, 3/4" diameter. I drilled a plaque of wood for a base at like 30 degree angles and made knife sharpeners out of them. They were only good for fine edge work as the were 800-1000 grit. I took them to gun shops and sold a bunch of them. They would put a razor on an already sharp knife, the gun shop owners were impressed. I am sure you are aware of the two ceramic rods set at an angle, I simply copied theirs. The Wicked edge does it right by using diamond and doing grit steps. You need coarser grit for most knife edge situations. With all the oversea diamond components I would think you could come up with a version similar to Wicked Edge. ceramic insulators similar to these:

When I said "dangerously sharp" I meant it. Lol Actually the only time a knife has hurt me was a dull knife. Never try to get a dull knife to do a cut it can't easily do.

Yep. Sharp is safer in many ways until you make a goof. I wondered how sharp sharp can be. A fine test if it will shave hair on your arm. 1 micron is a polish, scary.
Those ceramics would shave some hair. I have had new knives easily shave all hair. Sharp is difficult to define-where does it stop ?

Make it micron sharp (yes polished) take a human hair, make it into a loop. Now push the blade into the hair using the spring tension in the hair itself to cut the follicle. The smaller the loop, the "easier" it gets. Lol

Fishing hooks is another sharp that counts. Effects catching big time. The shop manager of southerngrind.com/our-blades/ picked up a custom made fire pit yesterday. They have water jet machines to assist making their knives. Some real high tech stuff going on. I should have asked him what sharpener he recommends.

Water jet allows them like to cut out handle materials too. I have recently looked at smaller (1meter square) work area water jet machines. They seem to be coming down into the world of afford able for small shops.

Sharpeners seems to be the high demand item.

Impact of applying Marmalead to Etsy shop still running strong after 11 weeks starting April 23 2017. The light green bars are for last year and illustrate the normally flat summer sales during warm season for fire pits. The US had a hot June 2017 and fire pit sales are still up. This is uncharacteristic. It is the careful selection of the key words in the title and listing the same keywords in your 13 tags. ****Best key words in title AND copied to the 13 term tag list at bottom of listing- must have them listed in both locations. Must. The key words were carefully selected from Marmalead generated population based on their highest Marmalead ratings. Making sure you use a minimum of the top 7 key words in title. No matter how goofy your title looks. Max out title space with key words, no space left. Dumb computer only sees key words to rank you. Not literary quality. I spend the bare minimum on promoted listings. Searching #1 search term for fire pits I come up 2:1 better that next best optimized competitor's listings on Etsy. And I have no education on SEO other than brief involvement starting 4 months ago. Yes, good trending product and good at kissing customers ass/service. But good SEO is most important.

Generally on all of the start ups of several kinds of businesses, that I have began, my sales were surprisingly close to the same. 2nd year was 2 X the first in gross sales. 3rd year increase was half of second year sales. 4th year was the same dollars increase as third year but percent was smaller. Was surprised that Auto salvage, wrought iron and Pottery importing would be almost the same as the 3 large retail-garden center nurseries would be. Ads were consistent through the types. Ran at 7 % of gross sales first 3 years then after the customer flow was what I wanted reduced to 4 % of sales. Currently on this last nursery I run at 4 % of gross sales as a maintenance. If I continued the same 7 % there is serious diminishing returns on ad dollars spent. I keep the extra 35-40k in my pocket instead of spending it to generate an extra 50-60 k in sales. Saves wear and tear on people and equipment to not press beyond a certain point.

This selling over the internet thing is so effected by search optimization coloradocliff. Giant market potential controlled by 'logic words' is a bizarre animal. I am shocked at the internet population that does not play the logic word game well. They skip the very simple basic rules. By simply optimizing words you can X10 your sales almost over night ?? Insane. I'm about ready to hang up and retire. Worked hard for many years and saved my pennies. This web thing is new to me. You sound like a seasoned businessman and enjoy a challenge. Making and selling widgets(plants, fire pits, other stuff) has always been a fun source of income. Plants are the most rewarding. Plus they can be propagated from little of nothing. Gets no better than that. High margin product. Ha, a bit high on the labor too but totally healing.
