Don't know aggressive beasts like you got over there, but yesterday had an encounter with ........ Something I had never seen around here before. Had heard rumors, but never seen a life one. A 10 inch/ 25cm Centipede (Scolopendra family), as thick as my thumb. No picture, as it caught me by surprise on the walk back down, and then I was too mesmerized for too long before fishing for the phone to take pictures. He took off in a hurry; amazing how fast those things are....... Not my picture. Picture by cowyeow taken here on the island. Must be the type I saw. I remember it brighter coloured.......?  Violence of a different kind,.... Looks like, this fella is an unwanted species the "Asian Longhorned Beetle" as he kills trees. Saw him last Monday; I'm not a bug-guy, but that one stood out with a body-length of a good 3 inches. Could see him from nearly ten yards away.  |

The cicada's drive me nuts. I detest them so much I used to get up in the morning and go out and find them while their wings were still wet and feed them to the chickens. Yellow jacket's they are not nice if they leave me alone I leave them alone. Don't set a canned drink down.

Fact of it is mosquitos are the real killers spiritstone. I think coloradocliff got bit by the tittsi(tsetse) fly. What's a ladyboy ? Hermy the ladyboy ? I'll pass on that one. Got nothing here to compare to a 5 pound frog eating centipede kk. The black bug looks classic tree borer on steroids. A tree's worst enemy even when tiny. morerockspleaz, many a sip on a canned drink has resulted in a sting from a yellow jacket. And they swarm meat of an animal being processed during warm season. |

When my boys were small we used to see who could shoot the most cicadas with the BB gun. Our Jack Russell would wait under the tree to finish 'em off.

Made me think of my sister's last pit bull. Rats would get up in the orange tree at night and eat the oranges. She'd grab the pellet gun and go pick them off. Her pitter would grab them about before they hit the ground, and finish 'em off.

Yeah that frog eating centipede stopped me in my tracks.. WOW ! Glad that all we got are coyotes. Wasps aren't as bad around here.Skitters are bad in summer and the tourist of course.

Medium example ( maybe 7 inches) of our Texas Red Headed Scolopendra eating one of our Turkish Geckos on the back porch. These get really large, about a foot long and an inch across the back. Pretty much blind but a whole lot of nasty.  Much larger one about 3/4 inch across the back plates and 9 inches long, hunting in our front lawn. I like bugs but these even creep me out a bit.  These feed on our ash trees. Texas has some big bugs too...Mel  |
