When my boys were small we used to see who could shoot the most cicadas with the BB gun. Our Jack Russell would wait under the tree to finish 'em off.
Made me think of my sister's last pit bull. Rats would get up in the orange tree at night and eat the oranges. She'd grab the pellet gun and go pick them off. Her pitter would grab them about before they hit the ground, and finish 'em off.
Got a friend that has a high powered pellet gun. Knocks coons dead from his peach trees. Never thought an air rifle had the smoke but he proved it to me. Has a hella good little airgun. |

What won't a Jack Russel eat ? Y'all are real good shots. Yeah, he would eat a bunch but always puked em back up. Toughest part was locating them in the maple trees to get a shot. Not going to mention lightning bugs & badminton rackets.... We do badminton and carpenter bees. We had a female dog that went crazy eating katydids ONLY when she was pregnant go figure. Bet that terrier could get a bellyful in a short. |

Fact of it is mosquitos are the real killers spiritstone . I think coloradocliff got bit by the tittsi(tsetse) fly. What's a ladyboy ? Hermy the ladyboy ? I'll pass on that one. Got nothing here to compare to a 5 pound frog eating centipede kk . The black bug looks classic tree borer on steroids. A tree's worst enemy even when tiny. morerockspleaz , many a sip on a canned drink has resulted in a sting from a yellow jacket. And they swarm meat of an animal being processed during warm season. We have carnivorous, leaf cutter like bee out in the desert that when you park your trucks for a while WIll come out and eat the dead insects from the front of your radiator. Kind of like cleaner wrasses do in fish tanks. |

No cicadas around here. Whew!
When we were driving through the Midwest, we stopped at a museum in the middle of nowhere. As we were walking along the path under some trees, we heard music. Stopped and listened. Nice!
Asked the lady inside about the musical trees.
Cicadas!!! Yikes!! Hadn't seen anything. Sure make pretty music! Lol

Back to the yellow jackets, Back when I was in grade school in Austin Texas, I used to catch them on their paper nests in canning bottles.  After catching and bottling about 15 of them, I thought I had the science down pat. I found a nest in the loft of a barn. Went home and brought back a large jar and lid. I slowly slid the bottle over the nest . . . and as the wasps started shooting out both ends of the jar mouth I noticed for the first time that the barn roof they were attached to was corrugated metal. The primitive part of my brain took over and I left that loft in a wild sprint that continued when I hit the ground. amazingly I only got one sting - on the back of my neck. I gave up the hobby without giving it another thought. There must have been some reasoning power somewhere in my young skull full of mush. |

When I was a kid I found that if you messed with a rabbit enough it will bite.. Don't pick up a squirrel in the road that's hurt, it will bite, Don't pull a guy apart from hitting his wife, they will both attack you. |

And don't collect paper hornet nests in the winter and hang them on the wall only to warm up and turn your house into a hive 1dave !! Another couple not to triffle with is a twins fighting coloradocliff. It's OK if they beat the stew out of each other but don't dare try to break them up. Love/hate I guess. Me and little brother entered an old subway car parked in the woods as a hunt camp. I walked to the back of it, my brother stayed at the entrance. He bumped a huge japanese wasp nest, yelled-JIM BEES !! I saw the cloud of bees at the exit. Put on my fastest feet and took off for the door. Just as I got to the exit I noticed I was carrying my gun horizontal and it was not going to make it thru the door. I got clothes lined across the chest, wrapped around the gun, landed on my back in the cloud of bees and bent my gun. Completely knocked the air out of my lungs, stunned and stung no telling how many times. Always point your gun forward soldier. |

James: Eastern Hercules Beetle. We have a ton of OX beetles too, another big horned scarab. Sound like rocks when they hit a window. Larvae in the ground are a favorite dillo food.
Cliff: We have the giant red Polistes paper wasp here in Texas. About 1 1/2" long at the biggest and when they sting you, you'd swear someone snuck up on you and hit you with a two by four. Extremely aggressive too. You can see their eyes rotate to watch you when you are near a nest.
Been trying to get a pic of a spectacular two inch cricket hunter type wasp we have here but every time I see one I don't have my camera. Whole wasp is muti-colored flashy metallics in blues. purples, greens etc. Looks like it's made of spectrolite. Beautiful and extremely docile wasp.....Mel

Red Polistes = pain. Makes Yellow Jacket feel like a mosquito. The Red best be respected. Most important attribute: Both are dead accurate on the chase and sting connection when disturbed. And super hot tempered. This is a Florida variety wasp, guessing Polistes( Sabre52 ?). This one is super aggressive and always makes big nests. The biggest wasp nests I have ever seen. Kayaker's worst nightmare. Oklawaha River, central Florida, in a back finger where the water rises and lifts your boat due to big alligators escaping under your boat.  And like 1dave, tempting fate in a boat no less.  |

Got some bad bugs there. In Colorado its a shorter and colder season and don't get that big.
Lmao the subwaycar incident except bending the gun. We didn't get much chances to own a lot of guns as a teen
and cherished all of mine back in the day.

Lmao the subwaycar incident except bending the gun. We didn't get much chances to own a lot of guns as a teen and cherished all of mine back in the day. A Mossbrg Shotgun with a replaceable barrel. New barrel fixed all except a deeply bruised sternum and my brothers feelings after I jumped on the big bruiser. It is still used, accurate as ever. Beer cans at 50 yards w/a bead sight and a slug. Speaks Holy language to whitetail deer. |

Said it a million times before, In Texas, if it don't bite, sting or stink, it has thorns. We have harvester ants here who's sting will make you want to sit down and cry and while riding this AM I saw a Tarantula Hawk Wasp so huge it would probably take a 12 gauge to take it down. I've read their sting ain't bad but I had the experience with a relatively small one, one time as a kid, and I seem to remember it was a bit harsh. Maybe I were just a little sensitive to it *L*. Wasp landed on my arm while hunting, it tickled and I swatted it without looking. Thought, dang that is big, and looked at it as it flew away unscathed by the swatting. Then came the pain...Mel
