Well that didn't go as planned Yes, it did. Water to steam expands by 2,000%. When we pick rocks for our sauna stoves they have to be solid, other wise they will explode when you heat the sauna.

Looks like Steve has some mad skilz. Looking forward to seeing what he does with the glass. I did a search for "Hot Melt" brand and nothing came up except hot glue links. Even a Wiki entry on glass industry didn't have it, but they had no information at all on Chinese glass.

Photo please. Painting to me is one of the purest forms of art. Watching a sketch artist, simply amazing. Envious of those folks. Here's a couple of pencil/charcoal drawings I did of one of my horses and my dog. They were both done looking at photos. Will try to find the painting and get a photo of it. I am amazed also at people who can draw and paint. I have seen some of the metal artists here that draw their piece out then make the piece. I just have silver and rocks and stuff and jewelry happens. fernwood your drawings are great!

So sorry to hear about your friend. (cringe cringe cringe). I am used to steel, throwing it around with out worry, but glass is another story. My plan is to put the whole 4000 to 5000 pounds on a trailer and back it under a shed and let customers come and remove it from the crates. Please don't make me handle it. Please. I will have to handle the keepers eventually. Maybe a full leather outfit ? I ran an add in a Facebook 'glass supplies for sale' group. It appears this glass is at least 15 years old meaning it was probably colored with the expensive metal coloring agents. Curious to see if there is any interest. I am getting a whole bunch of powdered glass(and regular sized) frit in 1 kilo jars. The powder is great for glass 'paintings'. Facebook ad: Leather gloves are a must Hopefully you will get a buyer My friend was alright-living a happy life with his beautiful wife and boys Some of the plants we go to require us to use gloves that have cut proof properties and also smash proof properties. They gave me a pair and and at 45 dollars a pair I didn't buy any. The bigger the company the hoops you have to jump through. Mom and Pop operations seem to defy MSHA regulations and kind of look at us funny when we show up with High Visability and hard hats.

Just saying, I might be the only glass fuser on earth that would dare put vase glass from all over the world in a kiln. China made glass has repeatedly performed with the most desirable meltability and and color response including their cheapo vases. Willing to bet they melt in the nastiest metals to derive color since humans seem to be somewhat a disposable entity in that country. And mining operations that collect the finest ingredients since environment is unlikely a concern to that nation. The Murano families that owned the coloring agents back in earlier days controlled the glass industry. Formulas handed down for generations. The blowers had to earn respect to get these secret formulas. China may be handing down formulas for a millennium.

Kevlar gloves are used to handle tight fishing line when fish are attached to it. Thin wimpy gloves but man do they prevent thin monofilimant from slicing deep. But hooks go right thru it, get stuck in them.

Not at the moment, I haven't been on much this summer, blew out my knee and have spent a whole morning reading this thread, I must say I need to run down your way when it cools off. Can you tell the COE of glass if it gets mixed? If I run across what I think I saw I will let you know.

Home of so many nerve endings.

No no and no, there is no way to know glass COE unless you know the specifications or know how to test for it. I can tell you how the old age guys determined COE before we had expensive tech measuring equipment. Very simple. 1) heat two pieces of different glass till it sags into a ~2 foot long string and stick them together, then anneal. 2) remove from anneal after cool and inspect for a curve in it. The higher coe glass will be on the outside of the curve. Just like Billy heating a strip of steel on one side with a torch. If the duet is straight then you have equal COE's. It is a question I imposed on a an older seasoned glass blower. and if I get cracks in a 2 inch wide melt slab the COE is way off. If I get no cracks in a 16 inch melt slab then I know the COE of the mix is darn close. About half the 14 to 16 inch melt slabs I make out of Spectrum scrap glass from the blower ends up cracking in half about 2 to 3 days later. Cut into smaller pieces from one of these large cracked melt slabs and almost never get cracks. The big melts are the vulnerable ones. The longer the melt the higher the chance of a crack.

After spending so many years managing programs that provided training/employment for those with challenges, gloves and I do not get along. We always had a policy that no one could wear gloves when using saws/drills. I only used them when doing personal cares and feeding. Even on the farm, I only wear gloves in winter.
