Is it ok just to make stuff and stockpile it ? ...if it isn't, I'm gonna be in a heap of trouble! Not going to lie, I had a chuckle out of one of the pages out there -- don't recall where -- that had 'uses for tumbled stones' that had only one or two things that weren't essentially 'look at them and pet them and ooh shiny', and a whole lot of minor variations on 'put them in a container where you can see them and look at them a lot'. ('Put them in a vase!' 'Put them on a display plate!' 'Put them in a jar!' 'Put them under faux flowers in a vase!' etc.) At least I feel better about my plan: get a whole mess of dollar store clear vases, fill them with shiny things, and line some shelves with them. With the glass especially, you could potentially get a number of little uniform clear containers, and make a rainbow or gradient shelf with 'mostly this color' in each going along a line to form the color gradient, container by container. I may do something similar with the endless beach quartz. Then it looks like you aren't ever supposed to part with any of it, and this was all intentional from day one. (That's the planned explanation, anyway!)

That test melt turned out great in my eyes. No running or blending of colors. Always loved the Spectrum opalescent varieties of stained glass. My neighbor did large scale stained glass as a business. Doors, windows, etc. The number of opalescent pieces of glass she had was amazing.
Yes, house is hot and humid. Kept it down to 80 degrees with 70% humidity yesterday. Dunno what is going to happen for the next 4-5 days, as it is going to be in the 90's and upper 80's for temps. House is still 80 with high humidity.

Tumbling lends to OCH in the worst way Dee. Obsessive Compulsive Hoarding We're 'collectors' as it is. (By which I mean: this house is so full of weird things, often many of that weird thing. Seashells, dolls, the husband has basses and DVDs everywhere... my father co-opted my stamp collection when I was 8 to turn into three full bookshelves in under a year; I plead heredity!) ...better shiny and ensmallified some and in vases in the house than crusty brown in buckets with trees starting to grow out of them in the yard?

surrealityMy tumbles are being used for my jewelry business and for giving to children at shows. There are a lot more uses for tumbled rocks than the ones you mentioned. If interested, send me a PM and I can share more.

Super humid here Beth, more rain during May/June than I ever remember. Day temps 92/93F now for a month. I feel for you. Me a bit used to Georgia heat, but not in the beginning of hot season. I bet you guys are way not adapted yet. This is the 'Hot Mix Fire Dragon' glass from China. Man is it tough glass, throwing pendant melts on concrete and it just bounces w/out breaking. About 80% starts out clear, but 80% strikes to opaque making a before/after chart required. Tricky to compose with all the change, colors change too. I was short on opaque, looks like I will have all I need.

Edge view of slabs. They teased the knappers, one is going to make a spear out of it in trade for knapping blanks. Pumped Ready for tumbler

I like the man and sci-fi colors, too, jamesp . Gotta please everyone! Wow, just watched 'Only the Brave'. Tore me up, so sad. I can not bring myself to watch it. I would just cry through the whole thing. I remember clearly waking up that morning to the news on the radio. It was devastating to those of us who live here. A few weeks before that there was a wildfire that spread onto Granite Mountain. I drove past it on my way home from work and saw it jump the top of mountain, spreading east. We had just bought our house and had ash falling on us in the driveway. It was scary, but those guys put it out before anyone lost their homes. Heroes.

So much loss for such a small community. That melt opened up the knapper's eyes. The Fiesta 'camo' grabbed them. I'll keep teasing those guys till they tap out.

OK, I got spoiled by having AC in my previous custom built house. Have had heat stroke and heat exhaustion in the past. Need to constantly monitor BP and heart rate in these conditions. The outside heat does not bother those with AC. They just stay inside. Had I known the lack of insulation in this house prior to purchasing, never would have done it. Inspection prior to purchase failed to catch that one. All I can do now is monitor vitals, do only the minimum, eat/drink healthy and hope it works. I love living in WI. 4 seasons. Over the past 5 years or so, each season has been more extreme. Winter temps up to -30, with high winds making wind chill up to -50. Summer temps of 100, with high humidity. Yup, we get all extremes of climate here. Today's high is predicted to be 98, with up to 70% humidity. Heat index in the 115 range. Potential for severe storms tonight. As a NWS Storm Spotter, have already been activated. Going to be a long night, as the most severe storms are supposed to arrive here at Midnight. There is a campground/horse cmp across the road from me and a huge State Park about 6 miles to the East. NWS relies on me to alert them where severe weather is headed their way. Becoming a Storm Spotter was on my bucket list for many years. Did it. Now can alert neighbors and others to be safe.
Love that the knapper's are on to the Fiesta colors. They are really something special.

At least you'd be able to go there to cool your core down when you need to. That, or one of those portable ones that you can move around. Those actually work pretty good.
Stay safe in that heat and humidity.

Amazingly, I have no windows with outside access to my main living area. Only one is in master bedroom, and that is unisulated. So, close it off for most of the year. Sleep on couch in living room. Have light coming in there from patio doors and windows to uninsulated, but closed in, porch. Those windows have plastic over them, as do the ones on the outside of porch. Living in about 400 sq feet with my 2 cats most of the time. Sleeping on a rather nice couch. Needless to say, the small living space, causes challenges for my rock/jewelry addiction. I do have a storage area (another bedroom), off the living room, to put some things and access as needed.
Just doing what I can with what I have.

I live in a small house fernwood and used to stay at Florida hut 2-3 months out of the year with only an artesian well(cold water) to bathe in. I always liked living in small spaces camping out so to speak. Keeping up a 3500 sq ft house does not sound like a pleasant task.. Those new $150 window AC units will flat out cool and dehumidify a 400 sq ft room and use little power.

Post a picture of the spear when it's done -- I'd love to see it. That first one you posted was so cool. This glass is mostly striker Robin. Starts out transparent and changes to opaque. Spectrum opaque gives me fits being unstable after cooling. Easy to predict color though. Not the case with this new glass. Perhaps the striker type is much more stable. But hard to predict color outcomes. Still not getting any comments from the glass fusion gurus about 'Hot Melt' brand. May be the only batch imported to the US. May end being a large vein of AAA opal discovered in my own back yard. I can see an interest in those knapper boy's interest. May have captured them with this glass. This fellow stepped forward and wants to try it. He took some stock on trade and I get one of his spears back. Trading knapping glass for finished spearheads is as good as selling it for money in my case. Check out Steve's work with chert:

Suppose I could take the plastic off one of the living room windows that lead to the porch. Put an AC in that. Then develop a way to have it gain outside air and drain through a porch window. Don't want to place an AC unit in porch window and have living room window open. A lot of the cooling would be lost. Suppose I could put a box fan in the living room window to draw the cool air in house. Some thinking to do on this.

I am a crappy carpenter but I took a skill saw and made a hole and framed it in no time. Stuck that $150 AC in the wall of a 16x30 foot room and it would slap run you out it got so cold in central Florida Hell heat. Lol, cabin made of trailer loads of garbage. stage 1 in 1998, stage 2 in 2009. Note Ponce de Leon's pool of youth, aka 100 gallon per minute artesian fed bathtub and dead cold water www.flickr.com/photos/67205364@N06/sets/72157627668858110You can see the hole in the far wall for the little AC. I often kept a 5-6 foot gator in that pool for a few days(caught with fishing pole) Would not tell the guests in the pool till they noticed him on the bottom sleeping. He would be harmless because the cold water made him go dormant. A few of the inebriated bath tub partitioner friends jamesp at the throne, yes an open air bathroom lol
