Now that I'm looking at it zoomed in it also looks like there is too much angle on the outside curve too. This is another problem that I'm having overall. What's the best way to measure or gauge when you've got just enough angle?

Not much help here, but do you hold the cab perpendicular to the wheel? That gives a curve.

What looks good to you. The more free forms you do the better your sense of flow. The free forms I cut start as a series of straight lines and I change them to inside curves and outside curves. There is also the trade off between the biggest cab possible and a clunky shape. When the cab is going to have a girdle, I try to get a full inside curve on the face and back of the preform and for larger inside curves, I move the wheel from top of curve to bottom.

Since the inside curve is the most difficult part, get that ground to where you are happy with it then cut the rest of the cab to match.

I don't know if this will help or not, but if you use a dop, it's all about the angle that you hold the dop. I trust the angle of the stick when I can't see the leading edge. My angle can be very acute at times.
I think NDK has a good point. I find that works with a lot of things. I do it when I need to make matched sides in jewelry. I do the most difficult first and match up the easier one to that.
I know it's a little late to say so, but if you try to perfect the inside curve with harder stones it will be easier. Variscite is so soft.
Also, for the angle of the girdle, I use my dop stick for that, too. I find (for the way I work) that if my dop is going out at about 15 degrees, then my girdle will be fine.

I have one of your cabs with an angled girdle, the Rosalinda one. I think I'll hold it up to my wheels and see the angle. Yes, I am dopping. Tela, when you look at the angle of the girdle on the second and third pictures on the right side where the curve goes out, does this *appear* to be too much angle?

Draw or scribe a line around the preform and shape the dome down to it.

It looks a little acute, but I've seen worse. A silversmither doesn't need very much of an angle to set the cab. Some people bring just bring the girdle wire all the up and over the top just a hair, too. In that way, the angle doesn't matter. Personally, I rely on the angle to hold the stone in. I think it only needs to be like 12 degrees, maybe less. I'll tag Pat again because she always remembers the magic number, whereas I do not.

Diamond Pacific has an accessory that comes with their Genie. It's a small stand. I have a photo of here on RTH somewhere. It automatically gives the angle.

Ok so Tela's cab is on the brand new dop stick without any wax, by comparing her cab to the wheel and then my cab to the wheel I can tell my angle is a bit more than hers but not excessive. I can see for sure now the Lucin has way too much of an angle. I did contact DP about their cab rest a few months ago and they said it wasn't going to hit the CK wheel at the same place so it wouldn't be right for me. So, I've answered my own question and now I see just how slight the angle is in a different fashion. I have noticed that when I clean up the backs and add the little bevel that I lose a bit of angle. I'm paying a lot more attention to the very very bottom edge of the cab as I'm working now and "thinking" my angle from the base up rather than the dome down. Does that make sense? Maybe it's the other way around As for the inside curve I think the easiest thing is to get the curved side right first then move on to the other sides. Getting the girdle angle right will be much easier now that I have a different outlook on it. I've tried this a few times and this week the Lucin just kinda started turning out that way so I just kept going with it. It's such a hard material to work with, I think I may stabilize it before I go any further.

Glad that cab was helpful.
When you clean up the bottom of your cab, you are not changing the angle of the girdle, you are just removing a little of it. If you know what I mean?

The cab rest could give you a consistent bevel angle on outside curves or straight edges. No help on inside curves.
Well, maybe, if you wanna mess with the edge of the wheel. I wouldn’t.

When you clean up the bottom of your cab, you are not changing the angle of the girdle, you are just removing a little of it. If you know what I mean? The technical term for that is easing the edge.

Easing the edge.... nope, that's not what I was looking for. Technical, smechnical.
