Just ordered some of these diamond drills hoping they may drill faster/easier than other type bits. For 1.6mm to 2mm holes. $18.50 for 100 in 5 packs in many styles. Then I found a 35,000 rpm dental drill unit. Variable speed ! I know high rpm makes faster holes when drilling with diamond. If there is no high speed vibration.... I bought this unit.

Those tapered ones are great for not blowing out the back side.

Those tapered ones are great for not blowing out the back side. #1 problem is blow outs Evan. Your thoughts mirror my thoughts. The pointed bits got to reduce blow out. Check out this 35,000 rpm drill unit. My Rio Grande jewelry drill press only does 8000 rpm. Using these precision rotation dental bits in this machine may solve many drilling problems. Gotta drill faster. I figured a high speed dental drill would cost 40 times more. The ones the dentist use certainly cost more than $70 ! But a smooth 35,000 rpm out of this cheaper machine oughta be super efficient. Check out these glue-in "screw eye bails". Drill hole and glue bail in.

Another type hand piece that plugs into the control box. $50. This hand piece has an adapter for angle heads. It has a universal plug at the control box. TheRock, check out this variable high speed power supply in above post.

Pneumatic dentist's drills do 400,000 rpm !!
The electric unit at 35,000 rpm may be a whole lot better than a Dremel for not much difference in cost.

I’ve been using the pointed ones and have not had any blowouts Why did I not know about this revelation ? The chucking device on these dental drill units is I believe a tight fitting 1.6mm hole. Precision chucking clamp is critical at such high speeds. The chuck on the jewelry drill press is not totally aligned, noticeable wobble at speeds over 5000 rpm. Or it could be the cheap imported bits... This unit may be a fine replacement for Dremel's in general. Will soon find out.

My problem becomes the fine tip end of the bit wears quickly. I keep water on it but that’s my story. The set from Hazard Fraught I’ve already gone through 1 of the bits and only drilled maybe 5 holes? It’s still fine for enlarging an existing hole. Just won’t “bore”

I have a larger version of that tool see it HERE WARNING starting the unit at full speed the damn thing has so much torque it bend and twist any burr or bit like a pretzel. This is not a toy but a fine piece ofm equipment. Just be careful. P.S. Can you guys see all my pictures okay? For some reason I cant but can see all of your pics.

I've been bumming used bits from my dentist for several years, work pretty good and price is right.

My problem becomes the fine tip end of the bit wears quickly. I keep water on it but that’s my story. The set from Hazard Fraught I’ve already gone through 1 of the bits and only drilled maybe 5 holes? It’s still fine for enlarging an existing hole. Just won’t “bore” The smallest hollow(core) bits I could find are 2.5mm. Maybe this makes sense: The hollow bits drill much quicker than the solid bits I have tested and so far last longer. But as mentioned are larger in diameter. The problem with solid bits is the center diamonds don't have much cutting ability since they are spinning only on the axis of rotation. With a hollow bit all the diamonds in contact are traveling a circle and cutting. A 3 drills faster than a 2.5mm, a 4 faster than a 3mm, a 5mm faster than a 4mm, etc. Do you find the dental bits effective quartz ? I want to see how a pneumatic air turbine dental hand piece drills since they spin at 200,000 to 400,000 rpm. I am friends with my dentist. I am certain she would let me try out the dental unit.

nice find, thanks for posting them. I will report back on their performance Don. Guessing the shear speed of 35k rpm can't hurt.

Any comments on drilling performance TheRock ? I would have preferred the 60,000 rpm over 35,000. I believe speed is the game with drilling. I bet that machine will jump out of your hand when revving up to 60k instantly. The high end Dremel does 30K but it has some vibration issues at such high speeds. Have you considered a pneumatic dental drill ? I believe they have to have an auto oil feed.

I have been using the straight 1.5mm bits I got off Ebay to drill my mostly agate pendants with my Dremel. Not really crazy about them as I only average about 2 rocks per bit, quality is low but they were cheap. Just drilled 105 pendants and that average of 2 rocks per bit still held. Not really happy with that as I have to change the bits too often and with using the drill press for the Dremel, changing bits is almost a 3-handed job.
I usually prevent blow-outs, by the feel and the slight change in drill sound as it gets real close to breaking through.
It did seem to go against conventional wisdom, but the slowest speed on the Dremel made the bits last longer. That might be attributed to the cheap quality of the bits. I did buy some more expensive bits a couple years ago, but the cost per drilled hole was still about the same at roughly .25 cents a hole as I remember.
Might test out some of the Dental bits, just need to buy sets with one or two styles as the others might never get used. Think the tapered ones might be good to use.
got to go, 2nd day of the Show today and pack-up load out day!
Henry
