I know exactly what you mean. It happens to me at this place. It's a wash filled with Flint, quartz and agate. Found this cool little guy there. Polished him up and gave it to my friend as a palm stone. That's an amazing looking place! I think I'd get lost...again in a good way...for hours upon hours there! Sometimes at the Buttes I feel like I'm in a lost episode of Star Trek as it really feels like I'm on another planet! Other times I'm waiting for a Sleestack to come around the bend as if I'm on Land of the Lost!

I have the theme song for Land of the Lost stuck in my head now. Hey if you did run into a sleestak,it could probably show you where the agate pylons are.

Do you have better angles of where there are the holes? Besides that it seems to be a conglomerate, but the holes go along the way of coral/fossil things I've come across. Critter burying holes or whatever they are.

Critter burying holes or whatever they are. Wow. These were tough to get decent pictures of the voids. I almost see groove patterns on the picture you posted. I don't see any groove patterns in the holes on mine. I thought the voids were just missing minerals from the "pockets"... This one's kinda of an interesting enigma...for now.

Not sure what you do with them or plan to but maybe a rough tumble of it to clean/expose any hidden stuff or show it's potential. Or a cut
The perfect circle hole is the most curious part. Nice stuff!

Nice stuff! I desperately want to tumble this one, but it depends on what it really is. I'm leaning toward conglomerate...but my heart is hoping for it to be corral/fossil. If it's conglomerate, into the darkness it goes, but if corral/fossil, it'll stay as is...

I hadn't been hounding out at the Buttes for a few months. I've been going down near Fairburn instead. My wife surprised me last weekend and said she wanted to go hounding down at the Buttes. Here's a couple prairie agates we found while out there. The first one is considered a pretty "big" one. It took up half my backpack it felt like, but I couldn't leave it! LOL The second one has some of the "busiest" surface banding I've seen in a prairie agate. I do love the patterns on this one! rockpickerforever - I'm tagging you because I mentioned this prairie agate in the other thread... stephen - I'm tagging you because I was whining about the Jasper in the other thread...I guess we have nice rocks here too! LOL NevadaBill - I'm tagging you to show you our rocks with banding...but I still love your Jasper piece!

That's a cool looking specimen Jason. Very tight banding in it. The picture of the inside is curious. All those filament looking textures almost make it look organic like coral.

The second one is out this world. It literally looks like it’s from another planet! You certainly batting 1000 with your luck.

I saw that second one from a ways away and knew it was a pretty special prairie agate. I've only seen a few with banding to that intricate level. Nice ones. I like prairie agates... I do too. It's amazing how many prairie agates there are out at Railroad Buttes compared to the Fairburn area...and they're different too. The RR Butte prairie agates are a LOT more intricate, and the prairie agates down at Fairburn are just kind of "plain" looking...

Since I got my new motor installed and working now, I dropped one of my Prairie agates into the tumbler to see how it comes out. I'm really looking forward to it :-) :-)

Hmmm sort of..its in one of my zen patio pics. it had a section that looked almost like it could be clear quartz. So that's why I picked that one to Tumble along with its pretty gray and black bands.

I will definitely be watching for the after pic! When I first started hounding, I was picking up every prairie agate I saw. I figured they'd all be able to be tumbled. Now I know (kinda) which ones are surface banding only and which ones aren't. A lot that are only surface banded have this orange/tan interior.

Fun to revisit this thread. Some nice finds. It's kind of funny to go back to the beginning of this thread and see what I was questioning as being Fairburn Agates. LOL - It really wasn't that long ago, but my "knowledge" about them has increased exponentially...while my ability to identify ANYTHING else has stayed rather static! LOL

That's good to know about the tan agates losing their banding. Most of the Rocks I got in that order were tan striped agates.

That's good to know about the tan agates losing their banding. Most of the Rocks I got in that order were tan striped agates. Well, that's not necessarily true. The brown/tan/yellow prairie agates we have DO have banding that goes all the way through. I'll post some pics and see if I can differentiate... So these first two pics are most likely surface only banding and there won't be anything on the interior other than an orange/tan interior...and I wouldn't cut them. This prairie agate WILL likely have banding that goes all the way through the interior...and I would likely slab them or tumble them...
