May they be digging holes in doggy-heaven. This is post is dedicated to Buster, who, until he got to be too old to stand and dig at the same time was always willing to assist with the excavation portion of rock-hounding, even if it meant burying some nice pieces. He was utterly convinced that, if he dug deep enough, he would finally find the elusive squirrel stone. Buster passed earlier this summer, at age 19. He was a dachshund through and through. In the words of another winer dog owner, "... he was the biggest pain in the butt, ever, in a good way!" Rest In Peace, Buster by Stephan T., on Flickr Please add to this memorial with your pictures of old friends

So sorry for the loss of your 4-legged rock hounding friend. I love this idea and hope others will contribute.

Here is my rescue cat that loved to lick my rocks. He also loved to play with them. I would throw a small rock towards him and he would bat it around. I got him when he was 8 weeks old. Him and I went through a lot together. Mocha crossed the rainbow bridge in early 2018. I accidently killed him by using tea tree lotion on my hands. Little did I know that it was toxic to cats. He was almost 16 years old at the time. Miss him greatly.

I would sign up for 19 for any dog. Still, it is sad when they leave us.
My last black lab Tess was 16 and I had a heart attack the day after I had to make the decision. My current chocolate lab Daisy is now 10 and feeling her age. She loves to be out with me, but gets tired. She doesn't eat when we get home from a trip and usually sleeps for about 3 days. A lab that doesn't eat is weird.
Love pictorial tribute to your pup Buster.

Great thread stephan, thank you. This is Kira - she was my wife's GSD when I met them and she was already ten years old at that point. She was such a good girl and was the dog who finally introduced me to the joy of dogs and turned me into a dog person. I had a dog as a kid and I got my kids a beagle when they were small but this was the first dog that I chose to be around and she was a good girl. Sadly she passed a short two years later but not before we was able to go on several rock hounding trips with us - probably in hind sight it was a bit tougher on her than either of us realized at the time and I have some minor regrets over that - BUT she was in love with her human (my wife) and she would rather be with us than separated from us. Thank you Kira for changing my whole opinion of dogs - I'll never be without one for very long now thanks to you.

I also did not know that tea tree is toxic to cats (and dogs, too -- I just looked it up).

What I did not know until it happened was that dogs can have strokes. It makes sense, but until it happened, it just never occurred to me. 16 is pretty darn good for a lab, right? Buster slowed down at about 15. Still loved going out, but wore out more quickly, too. The last two years, the only walks were short (distance) and slow. But the tail still wagged for a while. His last year, he mainly slept (but still caught mice).

Been in a dog family since the "60's with some awesome dogs, all of whom I loved. None came close to Ziva.

I didn't lose Cat, but he got awfully sick about a week ago and I thought I might. He's old for a cat, about 15, I guess. We got him hen he was already old. He adopted us after he had been living on the mean streets.
He doesn't use a litter box so he has to go out. That really worries me but there is no way around it. He goes out at abt 3am when DH gets up and then comes in abt 6-7 when I get up (sometimes earlier). He is neutered so he has never been much of a fighter, but we have a lot of feral cats in the neighborhood- unfortunately. Animal control doesn't really help much.
I worry that A) he get in a bad fight and catch some disease or B) someone take a shot at him thinking he is a feral/stray.
So, last week, he came in real slow, skipped his food dish and went straight to the couch which he barely made it onto. He slept the entire day- no food, no water. I coaxed him to drink some tuna juice later and he did do that much and went right back to the couch. He slept till the next morning, then ate and drank something before going back to sleep. I was really worried about him. Then we noticed a big (and growing) scab on top of his head. Time to go to the vet. The vet said he had a high fever and an abscess on his head. It was draining down under the skin to one side of his face which was really swollen. He got some pain killer and antibiotics. He seems to be doing a little better. Not 100% yet, though he has been on it for a week now. I'm sure he'll be fine, but it's slow going. The moral of this story - love your little fur babies as much as you can cause you never know when you may lose them. His being sick really worried me and made me appreciate him and his wonderful personality that much more.

Does the Universe ever stop? Today we lost Winston, the sweetest kitten in the rescued family in a horrible accident. Rest in Peace, Winston by Stephan T., on Flickr How can I already be tired of 2021? In fact, I am tired of the whole g**d****d world.

Had to take my old boy, Cat, to the vet recently. I thought he was on death's door. He had lost so much weight. But, he ate like a Great Dane. Luckily, it is just hyperthyroidism. A pill every 12 hours will fix him up good as new (almost- he's still old). Tried using a pill popper, but THAT will never happen. I buried it in about 2 tsps of tuna and he gulps it down. Thank goodness!

That's awful, stephan . You have my sympathy for the loss of your fur baby. Thank you Tela. It's pretty rough. I know you're not supposed to have a favorite, but he had it. So sweet, beautiful, and the softest coat I have ever felt. I just feel sick.

stephan sorry to hear that. I believe the feeling we get in times like this is evidence that we learned what true love is. In a way we are fortunate to have learned this, but I wouldn't sign up for any more of these experiences.

Winston gave true, unconditional love. All you had to do was look at him, and he would purr. I will never forget him, even though he was in our lives just briefly.

I’m so sorry for the losses. Our pets are the best friends we have. A friend once told me that a house is not a home without a cat/pet. I believe it.

An old man I knew, long gone, used to say "a man has never known love till he's had a dog." I reckon there's something to that.
