So, this is my very first cab! Any comments and/or critiques are welcomed. If you haven't had enough coffee this morning to read all this, feel free to skip to the pics. LOL A special thanks to Tommy for supplying me the Tabu Tabu Jasper. Another special thanks to miket and stephan for advice and encouragement! I did this all with a dremel. Held the stone with two fingers and the dremel with the other hand. I know I made mistakes, it was a learning process, but I'm kinda happy with the results of my first one. The picture of the rough is unfortunately the backside of the cab. It was supposed to be the front, but it fractured while cutting the basic shape, so the front had to become the back. Tommy had an oval drawn, so I was going to go with that. But, once the fracture occurred, I had to reshape the oval. So, it's half freeform. LOL I ended up losing the top 1/4 of the oval, so it was a little bit of a pain getting it back to oval. It ended up being just a smidgen bigger than a quarter. I cut the basic shape using diamond disks. I think the fracture occurred due to trying to cut too fast...or it was just a weak spot. I shaped the oval sides and rounded the top using a 1/4" diamond grinding wheel. A couple times I smelled something funny, but than realized it was burning finger flesh where I'd caught it with the wheel. LOL I used 60/80/120/240 grit sanding disks. I couldn't find any finer grit disks, so I took the used disks and gorilla glued 500/1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper cut to size to those disks. Then I created a paste out of my AO polish for the tumblers by adding a few drops of water to it. Then I used a buffer pad to apply the paste. My dad had some jeweler's paste, so I thought what the heck. I used another buffer pad and went over it again with the paste. I do think that made it shine more. I wanted to use the vibe to finish this off rather than the buffing steps, but my batch for the vibe wasn't ready. So, this was all by hand with the dremel. These are the best pics I could get. Thanks for looking (and reading if you made it this far LOL). This was a lot of fun!

jasoninsd Thanks for that great trip cab report! I actually said OUCH! out loud reading about your burning skin! That's dedication. LOL!
I think your first cab came out great! (It's Tabu Tabu, BTW.) I see the girdle line got a tiny bit wonky but who doesn't do that sometimes? All in all it looks great and is a great save. Well done! I'm super impressed with the hand polishing, too.
You have a future as a lapidary artist, Grasshopper. (Oops, I guess that was dating myself. You do know Kung Fu, right?)

You have a future as a lapidary artist, Grasshopper. (Oops, I guess that was dating myself. You do know Kung Fu, right?) I smashed my finger and thumb with the hammer and hammer tacker so many times this summer, I think my fingers were grateful for a change pace in the injury department. LOL (I actually never felt it...just smelled it!) I have no idea why I put Juba Juba...maybe I was thinking of a Jolly Tuba player...LOL...fixed that! Yep. I wished I would have tried to draw a reference line for the girdle, but was hurrying more than I should have been. The process took a lot less time than I was figuring it would, so I know how better to take my time. Thank you for the critique. Thankfully, I look nothing like David Carridine! LOL

Totally in agreement that the cab looks good, and that getting a straight girdle is aPITA. I was going to go for a different TV reference, though, based on the creative grit adaptation: I dub the McGyver.

Wow, tough competition this month. I've been unusually busy and didn't think I'd be able to enter but I grabbed a bit of "last minute" time this a.m. and cut a stone. It was sold as Deschutes but to me it looks more like Biggs. I'll leave the final ID to others. This slab was a bit of a problem because there wasn't enough material to orient it the way I envisioned it. But I played around with a template and came up with this "solution." It'll make an interesting pendant I think. Nice "ghostly" contrasts with a slow fade to dark brown. Slab Preform Finished Finished Side Happy Halloween, Happy change back to darkness (for those who are leaving Daylight Savings Time soon), and good luck to everyone. I think I know who the winner will be...

gemfeller I'm going with deschutes. One of my all time favs. Great looking cab and yeah, perfect orientation for that piece.

gemfeller great work, and I agree with Tela: Deschutes with perfect use of the material.

Wow - another killer contest just occurred. Not just the SIXTEEN entries which was phenomenal coming on the heels of a 19 entry contest, but the quality and variety is incredible. My trouble now is which one to vote for... Without any exaggeration I have narrowed it down to four stones that will literally make me sad if I don't vote for them - and no, my entry is not included in that With these kinds of entry numbers it just occurred to me that maybe we should allow everyone to vote for multiple entries - up to three? I do think it would spread the field out but would it also lead to more chance of a tie vote if a lot of folks voted for the same three stones? Everyone please chime in pro or con and maybe we can integrate it into next month's contest.

What an awesome selection of entries! Tough choices - there are so many excellent ones.
Tommy I think keeping it to one choice is the way to go. Adding more choices will just muddy the water. I had to look at a number of them and all the pictures multiple times before I made my choice based on the contest criteria. I even may look at them again to make sure I made the right decision the first time.

I agree with Robin, one is nice and easy.
I'm not even gonna TRY to come up with a winner, yet! It'll take me awhile.

Nope, just one vote. C'mon man, you can pick just one! Of late, "vote " has become just another four letter word to me, lol. And I know this contest means the world to some, it's not all that important to me. Now, voting for president is VERY important, and does affect me, my family and friends, and the entire country's well being.

I’ll agree with Tommy. Three votes sounds good. It will makes choices easier, and seems unlikely to negatively affect the outcome.
There are an amazing number of really good cabs. Great work, and I’m glad to see so much participation.
