At least you were able to decide! I'm actually happy to not win please and thank you. I'm telling myself that I'm holding my vote until near the end in case I am needed to break a tie - but in reality I can't make up my mind... I am happy just having a good showing - something that I haven't been able to do much of lately with my creations haha. They all seem like winners when they are still in my head or I probably wouldn't start grinding on them. That reminds me of a guy I used to golf with...he used to look at me and say, "It all looked good until you swung." Doh!!! (Homer Simpson impression) To paraphrase Helmuth von Molke, “no plan of cabbing proceeds with any certainty beyond the first contact with the 80 grit wheel.”

Yeah, I've even seen multi-finger rings - like brass knuckles. That's one I'll never understand.

I'm not in it, so I hope this comment doesn't aggravate too many people.
I remember thinking the dimensions of many of these entries - I know they fit the parameters - would make them a really honkin' BIG ring.
The contest brought out lots of extremely nice cabs, so it's all good. Maybe I just need to update the ring design templates in my head. They're OLD.
I agree with you Vince - and mine is on the limits of the contest as well and would make big honker of a ring. Lets just call them "statement ring" stones That was a fad a couple of years ago but it seems to have faded. I had a girl who was buying medium sized stones from me to silver them into rings. Every time I shipped one I said to myself holy crap, that's gonna be a big ring.

Yep - it's all in what the customer wants.
We had a 20+ ct Ametrine in a show tray a couple of years ago, and had one lady ask if we had any bigger ones...!

I sold a 38 x 34 mm Tahoma to a woman who specializes in large rings. There are people who like seeing big rocks on their hands, I guess.

Man, this has been a crazy month for me but finally got time to get one done for the contest. this is definitely the smallest cab I've done. just a small endcut from some local pet wood. I'm really glad this theme was chosen because I've garnered a new found fondness of smaller cabs. fun to see what can be done with just a bit of material. dunno size but is hair smaller than a dime. Congratulations oldschoolrocker on your impressive win with your gorgeous petrified wood cabochon. It really is a spectacular cabochon from color and composition to craftmanship.
