Due to an inquiry, I am starting this database. Being that buying material online can be the Wild West, and many sellers list their material as "old stock" to fetch a few extra bucks per pound, a quick reference is needed. This will not be detailed, but rather, show which materials *MIGHT* deserve the label. That said, there are still plenty of unscrupulous sellers that sell counterfeit material (poppy jasper, jade, turquoise, etc. come to mind), but that is another issue, for a separate thread. Where fraud is common, I will try to note it.
As of now (and hopefully always ) this is a work in progress. As people add information in the comments section, I will do my best to add it to the first post in the thread, so that people can find it easily. Hoping for lots of help, as I don't know much, other than a few California sites, but I'm willing to do lots of lifting of what is handed to me. I'm hoping that this will be an active thread, and I am happy to be wrong and change entries.
For the purpose of this thread, "old stock" will be defined as material that is basically mined out (in some cases float will still be available, but rare), or closed to collecting (both public and private land where the status has changed to no collecting -- in this case some new material may be available to those with connections to nearby land-owners). If only parts of the areas are closed, this will be noted.
To start with, we'll do USA & International. If I get enough information for International sites, I can separate out by continent (or continental clusters)
Here is a shortcut to the links posted due to a collaboration by Thunder69 , rockjunquie and Tommy , which are apparently have been rescued from DropBox purgatory. Thanks to parfive for rekindling memories of their existence:

Some of these sites will be on the list of "old stock" sites below, so readers can see what the material SHOULD look like. Another tool for some buyers, and some good rock porn for others, who are more inclined to casually peruse.
Keep in mind that this is VERY preliminary:
Last Updated: 10FEB2021 12:34 PST
USA:
All States:
* All Vertebrate Fossils -- Collecting prohibited on public lands. Some
* Cave Speleothems -- Collecting prohibited at all locations except private property (written permission required)
Arizona:
* Copper Minerals -- Bisbee: Closed private property *NEW ENTRY*
* Merlinite -- Closed
* Mulligan Peak Agate -- Limited or no access
* Psilomelane Plume -- Closed
* Rainbow Wood – Material collected from what is now the Petrified Forest National Park (Established as a National Monument in 1906, and then as a National Park in 1962) must be old. Pay digs are available on private property.
* St. John's Flower Agate -- closed to collecting
California:
* Berkeley Thundereggs/Blue Agate -- Alameda Co: Built over
* Bicycle Lake Plume Agate: San Bernadino Co.: Military base
* Big Sur Jade -- while the ocean is by no means mined out, Big Sur jade has gotten so much publicity, it can be hard to find on the beaches, especially the widely publicized ones (Jade Cove, Willow Creek, etc.). A fair amount is still gathered by divers (there are some restrictions on how this can be done). Since jade from Big Sur is still relatively more abundant than the perception, the price it often fetches is inflated. Also, much of what is sold is not from Big Sur (and sometimes not even jade). Botryoidal and vulcanized specimens ARE relatively rare. Old stock exists, but would be difficult to verify. Additionally, there is no clear difference in quality, so beware of this claim.
* California Tiger Eye -- mine closed
* Crafton Hills Rhodonite -- Yucaipa: mine inaccessible (buried)
* Hog canyon Jasper -- near Parkfield: Private ranch
* Hornitos Jasper -- Mariposa Co: Red & White, Flora, Cosmos, Strawberry, Sierra brecciated claims closed/dug out
* Horse Canyon Agate -- Kern Co: built over/private ranches
* Indian Paint Stone -- Death Valley: National Park
* Lone Hill Thundereggs -- Santa Clara Co.: Built-over -- former quarry is now a neighborhood in San Jose *NEW ENTRY*
* Kokoweef Cave "Onyx" -- San Bernadino CO (Mojave desert); access severely limited
* Lake Berryessa/Snow Mountain – Glenn, Colusa, Yolo, Napa and Lake Counties. Certain (most) collecting areas closed, due to National Monument designation.
* Lead Pipe Springs -- San Bernadino Co.: Military base
* Morgan Hill Poppy Jasper -- Santa Clara Co.: the ranches where the original material was collected is closed. Many similar-looking jaspers can be found nearby and throughout CA, and other West Coast States, and are often sold as Stone Canyon. It can sometimes be hard to tell whether material sold as "Morgan Hill" truly is. Additionally, being brecciated, much is unstable and uncabbale (not fully healed). Prices for junk are often exorbitant. Blackberry picking is available.
* Margan Hills Whaele Bone -- Santa Clara Co.: Site built-over with a water treatment plant *NEW ENTRY*
* Needles Blue -- Dug out? Always rare
* Nipomo Marcasite and Sagenite -- Closed private ranches
* Owlhead Mountains Plume Agate and Sagenite -- Part of Death Valley National Park

* Rainbow Ridge (brecciated jasper?) -- Mojave desert: Owned by club; limited access; infrequent members-only field trips
* Rose Agate -- Ludlow: Dug out
* Santa Cruz Island Plume Agate -- closed
* Silver Lace "Onyx" -- Calico Mountains: the mine itself is closed, but some material can still be surface collected from tailings
* Stone Canyon Jasper -- Parkfield: the ranch where the original material was collected is closed. Many similar-looking jaspers can be found nearby and throughout CA, and other West Coast States. It can sometimes be hard to tell whether material sold as "Stone Canyon" truly is. Additionally, being brecciated, much is unstable and uncabbale (not fully healed).
