I think it looks great. No girdle doesn't mean it has to be high domed. The plume is gorgeous. I don't think it would look right high domed.

I like it and think it does fit the criteria even if it's not a high dome.

OK here is my entry - Carey Plume agate. I'm undecided if my entry really fits the parameters of the theme - I'm leaning towards not. I put a lot of time into it but in my opinion the result is sloppy and I'm not real happy with it. I thought I could get away with my usual style but taken on down to the bottom with no girdle, and about half way through it sunk in why this style lends itself to a higher dome. With the high dome the bottom edge comes closer to maybe an 80 degree angle where my thin cab has about a 20 degree angle and became quite sharp and inconsistent. When I tried to give it a backside bevel to prevent chipping it the result was it looks like a girdle unless you look real close at the angle. Before I decide what to do with this puppy I will probably clean up my wavy edges with the addition of a girdle. Lessons learned for sure thanks hummingbirdstones2 for the push. Mission accomplished on getting us out of our comfort zones Beautiful

Good news is I have a nice Amethyst crystal all dopped up and ready to go! Bad news is my old Lortone Grinder is taken apart await someone to purchase it, and my new CabKing has not arrived yet! It shipped today so it should be here either Friday or Monday (lets hope for Friday) so I may be entering at the very last minute.

Basically all of you are making a contact lens from a translucent rock. Interesting.

I have something to add. I had worked on this earlier, and was hoping I could have some time to make another cab, perhaps more interesting, but have run out of time. So, I used an end cut off of some rhyolite (correct me if that is not rhyolite). I chose a very small piece in case I messed it up. But, this one came out ok. I had another one that I created out of ruby zoisite that I got from Drocknut, but I chipped the bottom of it when I was removing it from the dop stick . I kept thinking I was working on a gum drop. Without the girdle it seemed a bit weird for me. Slab section Preform Finished cab Profile

Here's mine. It's been done for a couple of weeks, but the weather was uncooperative all last week and I was having a real problem taking pictures without the color blowing out on me when we finally got some sun. You can see the blow-out a bit in the rough photo. Someday I will figure out how to actually use my camera. This is a crystal Aussie opal from the Lambina field.

And just for fun, here's the crystal test for opal:

Thanks Tela! It has some green and turquoise in there that I couldn't get a picture of. The colors are metallic and a photographer I am not!
