Wow, awesome entries! Tough choice for sure. Now don't feel so bad for sitting this one out lol. I tried like Tommy to use normal style and bring girdle all the way down and ended up with piece chipping and gave up on it. Great contest and craftsmanship by everyone!

This is ridiculous. I have only been able to narrow it down to 14...

Great submissions everyone. It’s cool to see different variations under the same concept. Good luck!

For anyone who cabs you know the challenge involved in this type of cut. Those that don't cab need to realize the potential for the stone to chip is so high. one false move and all that work is done! Even the thicker stones tend to chip as you approach the edge. It is very frustrating and takes an incredible amount of patience and a very steady hand, and a ton of luck lol. This was a great challenge and kudos to all the amazing cabbers out there!

The most difficult vote ever. All of the entries show exceptional craftsmanship. Some very difficult materials were chosen by some. The results were exceptional.

As Tommy said, I was concerned that it wouldn't be this way.
As for chipped edges, putting a small bevel around the bottom of the preform right from the start helps a little. That usually keeps any chips from extending into the bottom surface, if nothing else. Some reshaping ( #*@#!!! ) will still be needed, but minimized if only the side surface is affected.

Is the last part of the process to grind the back flat to remove the bevel? Or can you leave the bevel? Thanks for the tip.

Bevel stays. Helps prevent chipping and allows room for a little solder inside a bezel.

I made 3 cabs for this contest and found that all three had small chips when finished in the vibe. Even the higher cab had small chips so maybe these are vibe problems for this shape. My selection shows the chips on the edge because I did not cut the bevel like I normally do on other work at the start.

This one was crazy hard to pick. Like miket said "I was only able to narrow it down to 14"

Congratulations agatewhisperer! In a crowded field of beautiful creations you and hummingbirdstones turned it into quite the two-horse race like we have not really seen before. Both stones and others were gorgeous and worthy of winning but your Montana pushed it over the top. As before, please PM me your thoughts about a theme for our June contest as well as if something has caught your eye from the RTH Store.

Congrats agatewhisperer on a well deserved win! Your stone was a perfect example of a high dome cabochon with exemplary execution. Truly a gorgeous Montana.
