Ok, here's my entry, Indonesian Coral. Freeformed, dremeled, finished in a T-5 vibe. That turned out really nice! Thank you!

OK so here's my entry - I wasn't sure if I was ever going to get a day off where I could work on it but it finally happened. The material is from the Purisima formation and it's found along the beaches of central California. I've never been able to find a an industry common name for it but it's basically just geologically speaking a young petrified mud seafloor packed with shells. It's similar to turritella but contains a larger variety of creatures and is definitely not close to agate on the hardness scale. It's challenging because it's about a 3-4 on the mohs scale and it loves to crack along the shells. The finish/shine is basically like trying to polish mud. After finishing it around 3000 grit the gray background gets a medium satin finish if you're lucky and the thin lines of shells shine like pearls when rotated in the light. Also challenging is the fact that after picking a beautiful pattern and starting to grind the pattern tends to disappear and change in a hurry leaving you wondering why you didn't pick the other side edited to add: Additional interesting reading and pictures

I find VERY similar material here in South Dakota along the Cheyenne River. Awhile back I decided to cut it to see if it could be cabbed. When I was cutting it, I was surprised at how soft the material was...as though it were a solidified mud of some kind. Hmmm, sounds familiar. I stopped cutting it and chose not to work it, as I didn't think it could be worked...but obviously I was wrong. Here's a pic of the stuff I find here - and I do find a lot of it on the Cheyenne River:

So many nice Turritella agate entries this month. I might have to relook my fossil selection or maybe try something different with the Turritella. Lots of great entries so far looking forward to seeing many more.

Yep, when I was in southern Commiefornia, we hunted a similar stone called Pt. Mugu Shell Rock down towards Malibu. Coquina was what I was told was the proper name. Our stuff had smaller shell fragments though. Think I still have a big faced block of it on my rock pile. Just ran across it the other day.
Golden to tan form from South Texas is called Devil's Toenails.

That fossil mudstone is called CoquinaWe have a lot of it on the Oregon Coast too. Hi, I appreciate the information and can totally see why the coquina name comes up every time I post this material. I continue to disagree on calling it that because coquina is something different where the actual rock is made from a very high percentage of shells ("almost entirely" per Wiki) and the massively compacted material forms calciferous limestone rock. This material that originates around Santa Cruz and further south is from the Purisima formation and geologists say it is sedimentary "mudstone and sandstone" which contains various fossil records depending on area found. The percentage of fossils to mudstone and sandstone in this material is very low, maybe 10 - 20% by volume just by looking at it? It's clearly not a material that was entirely formed due to the compaction of a massive volume of shells.

Is Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida made from a specific type of coquina or is coquina a generic name?

Yep, when I was in southern Commiefornia, Can we stop this crap? You may not agree with the way the state goes, but stuff like that is supposed to be what the cave is for. Let's keep it focused and on-topic.

This will get moved but why dp liberals have to be so darned thin skinned. U vote Democrat and like CA, great! More power to you. Someone else that thinks differently, awesome go for it. But the idea that Conmiefornia is so bothersome and divisive a word to you that you must not see it is laughable and downright silly

It is a word many people in California use, myself included. I will say no more. Actually, it's not being thin-skinned. It's frustration with hypocrisy and disrespect. The bashing of the left and California are constant, from the same group of people -- and it is expected to be shrugged off, but God forbid we say anything negative about a red State or politician... that's when people get their shorts in a bunch. Believe me, I could do my own bashing... there's plenty to make fun of. If that's how we want to do it, I'll throw rocks too, but that's when the mods will decide it's gotten ugly and tell everyone to simmer down. As lonmg as it's just the right disrespecting the left, well... by golly... that's OK. It's enough. Keep it in The Cave. That's what it's there for. I'm here for the rock talk. But, believe me, if I get started, people will be butt-hurt for sure... so let's not go there and keep it on-topic and peaceful. And anyone who thinks California is communist, either hasn't tried to buy a house here or is unclear on what exactly communism is.

There's many other states ran by Dems that aren't as hard left as CA is. It was a description given by a former resident of that state. His opinion based on his time living there. Pretending that saying Commiefornia equates to disrespecting all dems is almost as silly as being triggered by the word itself. The post has gotten far more attention than if you hadn't made a stink about it. If you know the description to be wrong than what more do you really need? This is not the first time you decided to be the Cave police. You complained about the Limbaugh thread simply bc you don't like the guy. Never even had to open the thread as rhe title was enough for you to know you didn't like it. But instead of skipping the thread you demanded it be moved to Cave. I will leave this alone now for we are way way off topic...

stephan I totally get your point and I personally try hard not to inject politics into otherwise unrelated topics like this - and we watch for it happening because invariably it's a jab that is gonna get someone riled up and it's all downhill from there. In Mel's defense, and not like he needs me to defend him, but he's been saying that word for a lot of years since he fled California, long before The Cave was invented to corral political topics into a space where they can co-exist on a rock board. Anyway, if we collectively note the points made on both side and let it lie I think that can be all there is to it without making me have to clean up an otherwise awesome contest thread. OK lets ramp this down please and get back to the contest which CLOSES TOMORROW! Everyone who is on the fence and or working hard on a fossil based cabochon let's get 'er done! ... and entered.

I will leave this alone now for we are way way off topic... The fact that you call California “hard left” shows a lack of understanding. California is a very purple state. The fact that my views are often mocked is not ok. I’ve had a lifetime of that, and it’s enough. It’s not just “the one” post. It’s routine mockery by a core group of people.
