This month I am submitting Turitella Fossil, or sometimes called Crinoidal Limestone. It is not agate, it is quite soft and has these wonderful quartz crystal inclusions. I have submitted an extra photo to show you how cool it is that you can see through the crystal sections. Another interesting feature is the petroleum smell you are assaulted with when cutting or grinding. Perhaps just future fossil fuel? My family and I collected this material at a road cut just outside Waco, Tx while on a trip with our Houston Gem and Mineral Society. It has lots of nice patterns and polishes up pretty nice. Rough Material Assorted Shapes Preforms. I did several because I wasn't too sure how many pieces might crumble while cabbing. Happy to say, they all made it. Finished Cabachon Domed Profile Bonus Photo showing the clear crystal sections

Here is my entry of Snakewood that I found near Bryan, College Station in 1964. This material has a very distinct pattern that looks similar to snake skin and was not very common in the area. I shaped it on 60 grit flat lap and finished it in the tumbler. Original Rock (at top left): Penny for Scale: Zoomed View: Side View: Back View:

I chose a small piece of red-orange dino bone for this months contest. I love this material. I dont have a side view because disaster struck in photographing the stone. If that makes my entry invalid, thats fine. I just wanted to share anyways. Im pretty sure my soul left my body when I saw this cab falling to the ground. I clicked "like" because I like the cab, great material, but of course my heart goes out to you that it broke!! So sorry to hear that!

My entry for this month's contest is a stromatolite. I am not sure if it is Wamsutter variant, but from photos, I have seen they look similar. I found this piece at a local rock shop and knew this would be my entry. We were looking at the original slab and notice a few fractures and after an accidental drop test, the piece this cab can from broke away from the slab. It was a long narrow piece with nice details of the fossil algae. we looked at it and a friend drew the shape and challenged me to complete a complicated large concave curve. I liked the design and the rock, but was not really ready for all the fun that a soft rock and a concave shape would be. I want to make this into a pendant but do not know what direction to make the top (1 or 2). What do you think? Also, I really need to figure out this photography thing, I feel that I am not doing any justice to how pretty the host rock is when it is polished. Thanks for looking! And here's yet another stromatolite entry. This material comes from the mountains of the Czech Republic Hungary.

Thanks, Ali. My source for the rough was eBay seller agatedigger-1970. S/he sells end cuts, and must have a good business elsewhere for what never makes it to eBay.
