So, this material is called White River Group Plate Chalcedony AKA: Badlands Plate Chalcedony. This material is EVERYWHERE out where I hound. It took all of about 30 minutes to fill up two milk crates...and that was being picky. This acts/looks like a "seam" agate. There is a definite top layer, a middle section which often is not solid, then another bottom layer. holajonathan came out for a visit and it was his idea to work this material. I've been walking past it for the last two years as I didn't think there was enough material to work. He proved me wrong. He made a cab while he was here. The difficult part of working this material is finding a piece that's thick enough, flat enough, and solid enough. But...when you do find a piece, I think it's gorgeous material!! These were my first two cabs after the finger injury...it was definitely difficult...but I couldn't wait any longer to do something! LOL There's a little black speck of something that photo bombed me in that second cab with the druzy! LOL

Those are really pretty, Jason. Usually clear chalcedony is kind of blah, but those have nice, subtle patterns in them.

Jonathan and I were talking about them. While they aren't an "in your face" kind of pattern, I told him I think they'll serve as gorgeous "backdrop" cab when I want to get a little artsy-fartsy with the wire wrapping.

I agree. They'd also be cool with another stone inlaid into it.

I like it! I knew you couldn't go six weeks without cabbing... I wouldn't either They are pretty interesting, and I agree with Robin that they'd look nice with another stone. Doublettes would look nice. I think picture jasper (or Biggs) would make a nice back. Have you ever done doublettes before?

I haven't done doublettes before...but I have some Nydeggar Plume I'm going to do them on pretty soon... I'm not sure the Chalcedony is clear enough for a doublet to be as effective as it should be on these...in my opinion...

I've never done any doublettes myself. That chalcedony is some neat stuff. I'd pick up truckloads if I could lol!

Very pretty. The subtle patterns bring elegance to them.

Very pretty. The subtle patterns bring elegance to them. Thanks Beth! When I was talking with someone about them, that's the word I used to describe them as well! It'll be interesting to see what all comes out of this material. I like those, they are pretty nice Thanks Christopher! Like I said, the tough part is going to be finding the right pieces. I already know they're prone to druzy pockets and fractures...but I really do think it might be worth the search. Really nice Jason & it looks like you have plenty to play with. Patty Thanks Patty! This plate Chalcedony is pretty much everywhere out at Railroad Buttes. I'm no geologist...but my feeble brain does tell me it was formed slightly above the rock layer - it's only a foot or so below the grassland surface. Now that the hills are eroding, the Chalcedony is getting exposed in "sheets"...except those sheets have been broken into small pieces. I'll take a picture of it "in the wild" the next time I go out...which might be Saturday. (Not that you asked for a pic! LOL)

Cool stuff! I like the first one best. I think a doublet with a colored background would look good.

A photo or two might help the theory. ( like you really needed that excuse )

I wonder if this is the same material that the Rockshed was selling, I think it glowed under a UV light.

We have that stuff all over the grasslands here, too. You did an excellent job with these my friend- I might have to rethink cabbing it sometime!

Interesting. Those cloudy formations remind me of Hector Hills material from California.

Good looking material. Might also make good backing material or look cool as doublets since it’s clear enough.
