I remember the old adage (unrelated) that all Gaels are Celts, not all Celts are Gaels. So I’m seeing with rock types and subtypes the same similar confusion. Agates are sub-cat of Chalcedony? Amethyst is sub-cat of Quartz? When speaking of quartz in terms of properties/tumbling, does that include all subtypes as well? Is there a chart that shows the major types and sub types of that type? Are there metamorphic types and igneous types of the same material? Just a lot of questions in general. Books from my local library are…sparse…and what I read ain’t stickin cause I have no contextual reference. Here's another good link with photos that breaks rocks down into three groups - Igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary. geology.com/rocks/

Some of the places we hang out along the SC coast. We camp 6 miles from McClellanville 10 week during the spring and summer. CHARLESTON, S.C. The secret Santa has been giving away a million dollars a year in the area since 2015 to people and families who have been struggling. It's nice to see these deserving people get a hand up.
I'm struggling to get a million dollars - just in case he reads this.

RWA3006 Randy, I just did a google image search of the top half of the first photo and images of petrified wood came up. Mr. Hadrosaur was definitely eating his veggies.

Jamesp, what a kaleidoscope of color you work with for your product. There is definitely enough selection that everyone can find multiple pieces they like. a few new man made obsidians out of the bakery Victor saw this at angles for slabs and get some interesting results. Sawyer has all the fun... Much of what looks black on this brick is transparent colors, see backlit below. Note varying saw angle effects. Above backlit, lighting change does color changes(digital cameras) That's pretty eye candy James.

Why doesn't Mexico have an Olympic team?
Because everyone who could jump, run, and swim have already crossed the border.

I've slipped on damp soapstone a few times in the metamorphic regions of the Western NC mountains where we find the corundum and staurolite.

Leave it to RicKB to collect just about anything. About 35 years ago I began keeping a Christmas ornament or two when I could find nice older ones at the right price, mostly from the flea market or yard sales. I ended up filling a couple old steamer trunks with boxes of them. Most are from the USA, some European, Occupied Japan, West German, etc. It's been a few years since we had a real tree to put them on so I parted with them this morning and sold all of them to a friend who's wife is a collector. What she doesn't want will go into an antique mall that he is in. In addition to some cash, he bartered a full grooved Native American axe (for $30.00) which will be added to the others that I have in my collection of rocks that early men and women picked up and crafted into stone tools. Edit: most of the ornaments are from the 1930's -> early 1970's.
