A friend of mine is a geologist for a local engineering company. Their current project is up in the San Gabriel Mountain range north of Los Angeles. Earlier this year, they were doing some core samples down to about 2,500 feet for analysis – of what, I don’t recall – but he dropped by and asked me to slab this piece as he wanted to give out the slabs to the team members working on the project. The material looks a bit like granite but is somewhat softer (I think he mentioned 5 or 6 on the Mohs scale). It cuts easily enough. It’ll make for nice gifts/conversation pieces when done. Note the depth marker 855 feet. EDIT Here's the core after slabbing. Interestingly, it has some green minerals in it that add a nice contrast to the gray/purple color. While I was at it, I took out another piece of that "purple cow agate" (I must've misread the label) and made a few cuts. Thanks for looking. Paul

@shotgunner some of the ground up there is on mining claims. That is part of the dispute. And we do need to be respectful of such, thanks for the context, 1dave.

You fine folks would not believe the shit storm this thread stirred up with the local rock club here. The mere mentioning of guiding anyone on this outing to the club's "sacred places" has threatened to end decades-long friendships and associations. I'm completely blown away. Sorry about that, Don.

Why isn't there a new Vista thread? I'm not going there, but I would think that much is lost in this thread by continuing to to discuss Vista in the Victor Valley thread. That's just me. Dave That's a good point, Dave. I setup a thread. See you all there.

Thanks for the invite! That would be a great trip! Unfortunately, we won't be able to make this trip as we'll be in Cedar City for the week of July 16-22. Please ping me with the trip reports as I am planning on making a rockhounding day in that week as well. Barbara and I visited Cedar City almost 19 years ago (pre-kids) and visited all the national/state parks in the area and the boys asked to go for the next (2017) summer vacation after hearing us talk about it.

Great haul, Barclay! That's a great spot. It's one of the first places I took my boys too for all the reasons you mentioned. You came out with some top-notch pieces!

I will be set up at Vista. Many were excited about my fluorescent minerals and lights. I will have more at the show. Plus more. What's the name of your stand or where will you be in the vendor area? I'm trying to get down there again with a buddy of mine.

socalagatehound: Ditto on the money thing. Spent more than intended and enjoyed spending every bit of it, LOL. I had a fencing contractor in that afternoon so I was up there when they opened and ducked out about 11:00 AM. Hopefully we can all meet up in Vista.

Thanks to Christopher ( christopherl1234), Dan ( Dr DG), John ( johnjsgems) and the other rockhounds who made the Victor Valley tailgate show. That club sets up a great time and it was good seeing everyone! Picked up some new pieces and a new saw blade! Great show, guys! ... anyone going to the Vista CA show?...

Excellent, looking forward to seeing everyone. It's been several years since I've made it up but it was fun seeing everyone and definitely a great place to get some rocks.

Welcome to the Forum! The Searchers that Barclay mentions are a great club. They have their annual show in early May. There's also the Victor Valley Tailgate Show coming up next month. Maybe we'll meet up there.
