x2 on Rich's comment. I've cut and then polished rocks on laps and tumbled. Both come out well. It's really more a matter of the rock and how it will display best.

HankRocks, I use Loctite Repair putty. It's a two-part putty that you cut and then knead together to mix the two parts. Then mold it onto the rock and press your fishing weight into it. I use those one pound fishing weights, they work well. The putty will cure in an hour or so and will handle the vibration from a vib-lap without issue. As CaptBob mentions, it's available at Home Depot in the paint/caulk/adhesive aisle (at least in my local HD).
