Crackled fire pattern is always a sight to behold. I think that is what the notion of Lava flow/fire is based on. There is quite a few pieces that I really like, but the one I absolutely adore; is your pendant. What a splendid creation. A treasure to behold.

Great post and some beautiful fire agates! kk did you do that one with the face? I don't remember seeing it. It's crazy cool! Yeah, Christopher, Gemfeller and I do similar things, yet our style is very different. But we are not the only ones in the game. So even if you have only a few Tela; lets see them in the hope that more folks come on out to play. As for the Monk, yes about 4 years ago. The face is made of opal (very simple as only 4.5mm in size)and gave the hooded appearance a surprisingly effective look. Its one of the pieces I send to Tom Shearer for pictures. While he gave me the gorgeous picture of my "first " piece, his picture of the monk did not work out as hoped for. So the pic above is just a simple play with mirror. Will have to re-do it sometime to get a better one. For now, till people chime in, I think I shall post one piece a day to keep the post on the first two pages when people sign on. I really would like members to contribute to see whats out there. On FB there is lots, but rather boring as everyone seems to want to show only currently favored colours. Finished set pieces would be an added plus. On FB, we see a lot of single stones (usually very small ones to favor one colour or other), but hardly any pieces set/utilized in wearable jewellery.

Nice solid colours Dave. Isn't the one (second down on the left) The piece held by Dave Penney (is that you?)in previous post? No real skills here, but in love with FA. FA is what brought me to this hobby. This piece actually started it all: Kainzer Kurt Fire Agate Dragon 1 by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr Not being able to select personally on location makes chasing colours an expensive hobby, but I rather chase overall beauty instead of commercial popular colours. So one has to get inventive to make things more attractive. Mexican Fire Agate Kainzer Kurt (2) by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr Looking forward, to a lot of posts from people hiding their treasures. Please let us see what you got. Its not a race or competition, but I would love to see the whats out there,

I think Dave was mentioning the kind with no potential for fire agate. Agreed, they can be very lovely but many occur without the brown sard (aka "agate") that contains the fire layers. Yes Im sure he was. Got some from Christopher. He especially selected some for me. Still waiting for the right idea to come along to use them in some carving.

While generally undervalued, desert Roses are beautiful. But lots of work when looking for the fire underneath.

There seems to be quite some interest in Fire Agate out there, yet I hardly ever see anyone posting their treasures besides gemfeller, and Chris. How about someone starting a post inviting, lets say up to 3 treasured pieces each.....

[/p][/quote] The three pictures are in 3 different light-conditions (Out-door shadow, Outdoor full sun, and indoors). If you got FB, there are two shaky videos to see more of the movement (just look for my full name (Kainzer Kurt)).

Ready for flight. Thank you Bobby1. Material worked out much better than expected. Just in case, I ever come into money and would be able to set into metals, I hid the hole for the cord behind the head (downward hole). . On to the next piece, Australian Black Jade. First try in a real carving in the round.A year late, was waiting for jade-symposium, but its not going to happen, so now, a "New Beginning". I usually melt the sides in order to hide the differences in style and/or proportions between back and front. This one should be clearly carved on 6 sides. Design drawn up nearly exactly a year ago, started today.

I usually dont like that kind of pietersite! Completely void of yellow, and red has hardly any chatoyancy, yet perfect for this project. OK, I think I'm done with the cutting. Now back to sanding. Found a way to hide hole for cord at the back of the head. Should be done soon. Looks like there is a second bird sitting on the blue moon

Accidents and mistakes are the best tools to learn from at any time. No matter how long you have been doing something. Working around them, while tedious at times, keeps things fresh an interesting. Not seldom, you end up with something better or more interesting after having had to work around mistakes or accidents.
As I dont sell, I never invested in tools like flatlap or wheels proper. So all I ever use for cabs or carving is a foredome (equivalent). Certainly cant do precision work like others, but suits my needs 99% of the time. As for sanding with foredome; I'm afraid I'm no help, as I cut, shape and polish with it, but do my sanding on SIC Paper by hand. But yes, give Chris a shout, he has a lot of connections to get the right bits and pieces to you.

Mishaps can, will and have happened (quite a few on the left wing), but that's part of carving (even more so on material with fibers or soft stone (both of them here). I don't like the idea of stabilizing, so I rather take the challenge and chance to ruin something, than pump it full with plastic. But that's just me. Thats also one of the reasons that I do not look forward doing custom jobs; as I always end up with something different from what I set out for. Having no clubs around here, the internet is the only opportunity to talk and show off.... So things can be a bit lonely, and one becomes unsure of the direction taken amid the silence. Hence any and all replies are treasured and an immense recourse to keep going. Thank you all for bearing with me over all this time.

Yep, the sun/moon idea is a great one. "once in a blue moon" comes to mind. The reservation I got with it is that I would have to drill it to facilitate/become a bail.

Rough cut Not happy with tail and head yet, but has to wait till next weekend. So its sanding for the rest of the week. Also, dont know yet what to do with the material in front. Should be utilized as a bail, but undecided as to eventual shape.

Started out making cabs to get acquainted with materials. And then progressed to carving. I don't sell, so carving is ideal for me as it takes much longer to create something. So, if you are in for the long haul, get creative like Jugglerguy suggested, and then progress from there.
