In the meantime, finished the cutting (including above flower and top). But no pictures yet. Picture here this morning. Overcast outdoor gives it an unusual colour. Like it. nearly done by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr Best regards, Kurt

Oh yes progress!!! Thanx for the pics! Nearly done. New post here: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/79104/wip-black-jade-june-updateNo pictures yet, but just did transitions on the sides today. Tomorrow will see the top (flowerside to complete the cutting part. The bird rocks, very unruly material that needed your patience to get it right. And you nailed it. Thank you. I find Namibian material more stable than Chinese one. But on the other hand, personally, while I love the regalness of Namibian material, I do prefer the chaotic fibers found in Chinese material as well as the presence of all colours in the same piece.

Round two: going a bit deeper undercutting on both sides. Does not look like it in picture, but lots of material removed since last picture.
Thanks for looking, Kurt

I'm not too picky when it comes to colour. For me its more about the fun to explore. Still working on that one, sure not worth financially, but..... Kainzer Kurt Fire Agate by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr For me, any colour will do, as long as its bright and can be seen without specific light-conditions. And at times, its hard to find someone to realize ideas. Its been 3 years that I'm looking for someone who could give me a proposal as to how to finish this piece securely with minimal metal. b2 by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr Have a great weekend, Kurt

I really like the bamboo side. I like the flowers, too. But, for me, I just like the bamboo better. Me too. Its easier to understand. The flower-side is too busy. Lets see if I can lift it off sufficiently to make it better understood.

Naturally, the montana is my favorite of the bunch. But all are excellent. Nice clean work all round.

Drawn up last year as a proposed summer-project and never done. ppSummer 2016 by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr So a few weeks ago, I finally got started new beginnings by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr Had my daughter draw up some flowers and scratched out the basic design. ppday two by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr Did not like it, and already thought of taking the flowers off entirely, but then, somehow today I got into a flow that changed things a little. Still not happy, but its a start to hopefully better things. first circle by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr CLOSE by Kainzer Kurt, on Flickr Thanks for looking, Kurt

Gone quiet around here. Here an old new one. Gave up on that one last year, and reworking it now. Not done yet. Both ends need more work. I'm on 600grid paper, no polish and dry as of yesterday. 02/02/2024 ADMIN EDIT - fixed broken photohttp://i1200.photobucket.com/albums/bb340/kainzerkurt/ippmproved%20but%20not%20finished_zpsl5vueuqx.jpg While it has no commercial colours, I do like its brightness and changing shades with every change of light source. I'm not much for themes but for June I'd like to see the best freeform cabs entrants can come up with: no templates, no standard square, rectangular, round, oval, pear or triangle shapes -- just creative shapes based on patterns within the slabs cutters choose to use. /quote] A man of my heart. Love the theme.... Now lets find something interesting.....

I'm afraid I don't know. I was send a parcel of mixed material by a friend in England to try out opal. That was one of the pieces.

As I will be leaving the internet for an extended weekend up at the cabin (can check in but not upload), let me leave you with one more piece for the weekend. I obviously I like FA, but I like better when I can utilize the material around the FA too. Always on the lookout for it, and cant understand why nearly everyone completely ignores wonderful material and cuts it off, just to get a relatively minute section of the whole. Everyone has his own preferences. I use cheap Chinese burs followed by SIC paper and 14K+50k Diamond paste. But I know several people who go as far as making their own specialized burs to do the job.
There should be several videos somewhere from Christopher, showing the process. So you can see how he applies the material.

Lovely material you got there. Done on the wheels? or foredom combo? All three are quick to finish, once you set your mind on a final shape.

Red seems to be tricky colour to classify. Maroon red and other reddish colours are rather common, true red on the other hand is a different matter....

In Quartzite I have looked at hundreds of finished pieces of fire agate. I have never seen a piece like Dons. Diamonds are way more common. Quality is out there, and it does not always have to be expensive People tend to buy on impulse, no one seems to be able to wait, and that often leads to inflated prices. Lots of opinions on what is attractive and what deserves a higher price, does not make it easier either. But,.... they are out there even though, yes, mine-owners do have first choice and one should know them to get hold of top material. No offense taken. Obvious to us, and needed to be clarified.... I had no luck with material from the US up to now really, plus the higher cost has caused me to stick with Calientes material. Lots of variety, and (for me at least) easier to work with. Love your piece shown first in the lineup.

Looks more like ammolite that fire agate. If more fire agate looked like this, I'd be a buyer/hounder Yeah, ammolite is what most people think of that are unaware of FA. True, a lot of pieces are rather dark and dissapoint after seeing the vivid colours in pictures. But, don't have to be. There are extremely bright vivid colours out there that can be seen at any time anywhere, but those are rare and gives the material its value (thats where the comparison with diamonds comes in when relating to how much rarer FA is).
