Hmmm, those apples look familiar. They are not very strong-fleshed? More on the softer side, if I remember right. If they are, we enjoyed those in a race against bees and wasps every year, as kids.

Thank you posting this for us FB illiterate folks like myself. I would be sad to miss the adventure! I love the story and pictures and, of course, the final product. For some reason, and this is a compliment, it reminds me of something from the movie Dark Crystal. Just looked at the trailer of that movie. My oh my, that is a very old film. Cant remember that one. That's really cool, Kurt. I wouldn't even know where to start on something like that. I suppose by sitting down, picking up a stone and a hand-piece followed by putting bur to stone....

Thank you all. I'm still struggling with detailing and faces overall. So there is yet a lot to learn and master. Love the process, as frustrating as it might be. Once done, the hype on any piece subsides rather quickly, and they are soon forgotten. Had a rather strange experience with mixed feelings earlier this year, as I sorted out give-ways for Europe. There where pieces that I had completely forgotten about, yet I'm way to greedy to give them away....

OK here we go from beginning to end for those of you who do not partake on FB. It all started a bit over two years ago, with a Montana heel, that had a line of dendrites running through milky but otherwise clean chalcedony. Step one, pretty much exactly 2 years ago (Oct. 2013), entered this in the cab-contest and for it ground down the back to stable material, and polished both sides. After that put it away again, but by now had an idea as to how to preserve the dendrites in front in form of a staff. By now, I envisioned to use the inclusions at the back as a sort of dragon-wing that swings forwards at the bottom of the piece and having a person standing on the inside of the wing holding the staff. Acted on that fairly quickly, but it would be another 6 months before I somehow could get the nerve to try to outline the person. Did not like it, so I put it away again. Until earlier this year as I got the drive to try out some dragons. That started the dragon face, but not much more. 5 months on in September, I finally got the vision to deepen the legs and wing-tips as well as to do a basic back. Followed by digging out a tail-end for the dragon. Was tinkering with it all month long, still hesitating because I could not envision the torso and head. But eventually there was nothing more to do so I had to try a head and the final arm leading to the dragons mouth. The head turned out situated much lower than expected and without hair. Looks ok as long as you don't magnify. The proportions fit, but I'm not sure if I would try to refine it, if I would not mess it up. So finally I'm ready to call it done (for now) Best daylight-pics thus far And Indoors plus back-lit Ohh yeah, drilled a second hole under the dragons neck to utilize solid material to string the cord (not trusting the stability of the wing-tips) Never had so many uncertainties in the past few years, does not look like what I originally envisioned at all, but still proud to wear it. yippie24 Thanks for looking, Kurt

Was that preshaped in any form? If not, you had quite some effort in order to get it done. Nice polish too. What tools are you using for big pieces like that?

Thank you girls. Yep got lucky with the colour combo. Thought of using one element of Spectrolite, but then that might have clashed with the Pietersite. So, yes, I'm quite happy with the outcome. Wearing it since Tuesday, and soon to be replaced by the one in my avatar (hope for Sunday)

Love te odd-ball. If that agate rind around it would be a bit thicker, that would make for a fantastic carving-project, leaving the center natural.

Hi there. Did not have anything really in quite a while, but while the Montana still needs another week and the Tasmanian material a new head bricks21 , this one is ready to wear. Got the idea recently, after a member took a completely different take on our challenges' theme. Glad she did, as this caused me to look into a different direction too. Took a Pawancawara cut-off from Daniel, re-purposed a Fire Agate done years ago, and an orphaned ugly duckling Pietersite that was send a long time ago as a filler in a bx from Christopher. Pawancawara and Fire-Agate became a brush, and the Pietersite fits perfectly with the strong color-differences here, as a background. Lowered into the Pietersite and then pinned and epoxied after giving a little silver wrap, ready to wear. Best colours I got today Thanks for looking, remain with best regards, Kurt

Will discontinue this post, and start a new one in a week or so under "Two Old Companions" First because the face did not work out the way I envisioned, and second: after I found old pictures, I will be able to summarize in one post the 2 year journey of this piece with all its crazy twists and turns.

OK, if you find more, I would be very interested in spending money on colour like that.

Thank you all for the kind comments. Best carvings? I sure hope not. There are some fantastic artists out there with incredible talent; as long as they are there, there is always someone to aspire and improve towards to. While still a far way from lofty goals, I certainly hope never to reach the top. Reaching a target is satisfying, but not for long.... By the end, its the journey that makes it all worthwhile!

Finally getting to the point of seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Picked up this piece again after near 6 months And a little more work last weekend (Sun-Tue). So hopefully I can continue with second arm upper-body and head this weekend after sanding out what I had, since Wednesday. Now naturally, some of you might be asking why I keep with this piece for nearly two years, since deciding what I wanted for it. Here is a hint what I see with a little light coming from the back (mirror surface). Thanks for looking, Kurt

Thank you all for the kind comments. Got some new material from Tasmania. But is softer, so I don't know yet if it will work out. Should have something to show within a week or so (fail or not )
