Much smoother walls than those around here. Must have been a very liquid, single flow. The ones here in central Oregon tend to have striations along the sides that show the levels during multiple eruptions. I nee d to check those outone of these days. the floor was very rough and hard to walk on. the walls and ceiling were coated with a layer of what looked like a calcium deposits.

Took a road trip to NOrthern California for a couple of days and stopped at the lava cave north of Mount Lassen. Always wanted to, but never was open in the winter when I was there, so ahd to stop this time. Impressive to say the least.

I was in the Army at Fort Eustis Va. Not bad in the winter but did not like the humidity in the summer at all. The first time for training we were in old wooden barracks without AC. terrible. Second duty there was in large concrete barracks and had semi private room. roommate and I installed a window AC. It was real nice. Western Oregon is much better. this morning at 10 it is 65.3 degrees out. might get to 80 this afternoon.

I love how you just have em laying around. It is beautiful & has some cool images in it Even better in person, not a very photo of it. Again this was part of the pile that the wife purchased. It came precut. I do have some big pieces I need to think about getting on the drag saw and do some cutting.

Have you tried muratic acid, works well on that Saddle Mountain stuff? I was thinking about it but i did not want to lose any of the small twigs. may try it on a bigger piece!

woodman Bob, what are you using to carve with? Tell us about the actual process please. I have been using a vibro engraving tool and some work with dental tools. fairly slow, but what I am removing is mostly what I believe is ash and is not agatized. Some of the other pieces of it that I have are too solid for this method.

That's very cool! You must have the patience of a saint. I don't know about the saint part but At one time I carved an elephant out of ebony and a chain out of Brazilian hardwood. this is going pretty fast by comparison!

Nailed it - Usually they don't turn out that good (Bleaching)... WOW! what an improvement! You got that right, I got a piece of Blue Forest that is not showing any improvement. Some to do and some don't. I will leave it in for a week and see what happens. Fun to play with anyway.

I will keep this in mid when I go to the local rock show at the end of the month. Did you rinse it with baking soda in water? don't think baking soda would do much for bleach, just plain water seems to work good.

Is this regular Chlorox-type bleach? regular house hold bleach of any brand, I does not lose the polish at all, but it has to be polished first. The bleaching process is very shallow

Not all eggs have the pressure ridges or whatever you call them, if they don't have them, just cut to get the maximum face size or whatever is the easiest to clamp. no matter what way you camp with or with out blocks, the vise has to be tight, if you can wiggle the egg it is not tight enough. If you have to use tools to get it tight use them, finger tight is not always enough no matter what you are cutting. Each egg may require something different as far as clamping goes. I would not hand feed any of those eggs myself unless you have a lot of experience of using that method.
The main thing is to keep it safe and have fun doint it!
