After looking at your pictures again this morning, I must say that your polishing is as good as any on amber I have seen offered commercially. You have obviously figured out how to do this. Thanks for sharing. Now I will not be so reluctant to buy some amber myself.

That last one is a nice size and shape for a bead. All you would have to do is drill a hole in it. I wonder how hard that would be. I really enjoy seeing your experiments with this material.

The sanding may release some smells that you can use for identification as to plastic or amber. It sure looks like amber to me.

Thanks Tommy. I can usually figure things out if I randomly click on enough things but I may not always remember what I did to get there. Your post is a really good explanation. I appreciate the help.

If you do a quick search for it on eBay one can find plenty of it for sale. I am very wary of it because every piece of rough that I have bought and worked with was terrible for pits, vugs and fractures. It seems as if there is a bunch of it floating around and not rare.

I've always kind of avoided those areas and have preferred a smooth surface. But this weekend I slabbed some really nice agatized petrified wood and right where I cut I hit a nice druzy vug and was inspired to cab what I got. I think I have changed my tune w/r/t voids. After seeing Tommy's collage, I'm like 99% certain I will try more! To me, that is absolutely beautiful and ads to the stone. It's not "dirty" looking yep, outstanding!!!

I may have it now if I can remember how I did it when I want to do it in the future.

Looks like calcedony. Common to badlands. Some thicker pieces from that area can be cut and polished for jewelry.

Your pieces all look very good to me. I agree with you about the gallery wire but you did a really nice job with it on the rutilated quartz. You really got your monies worth out of that school. Now to make and sell a bunch

If you persist at hot glass then this is how you look at the four year point. This is my hot glass area after I had cleaned up for a photograph. I now have about four or five times the glass and a bunch of beautiful beads that I can't sell. Seems to be analogous to making semiprecious stone cabs.

I think .50 a pound is a good deal if you can go and pick your own rocks. You need to look for the "pretty" ones that are also relatively hard. Twenty pounds of rough is a lot of tumbling. Give it a go and spend ten dollars. Let us know how it turns out.
