I would drill it, polish it ,cord it ,it would be beautiful natural polish pendant. Maybe grind a little on the back to show more of the banding .go for it have fun with it. Give it back to your son to where it. Don't over think it or it will stay that way forever.

Thank you Sabre52. As pauls mentioned terrazzo the piece on eBay was compared to it. I'm not sure how much they found it did not say. Maybe one piece? The material I have came from south Dakota. I need to break down some chunks to cut on my small saw. My 24" needs a blade My saw stopped when I attempted to cut this material. Tried dressing the blade and still no luck getting through it.

Has anyone seen this material? Said new to Quartzite this year. On the auction site it was described as being found near Freidite UT. By a family that was out rockhounding . Here is a photo from the site. It caught my eye because it looked very similar to some material I picked up. I have not slabbed any of this yet I have two variations of colors. This material is very hard and solid. Nice looking. One more photo. This darker piece is more dense and heavier feeling then the rest.

I haven't ruled out coral yet. As zarguy and mud suggested it may be coral I am still looking it up. It has a very nice translucency to it I will show a photo with back light. As far as where it came from I have no idea. Slot of material that I have been getting is coming from old collection's . This material came from what was left of a rock shop here in my town I think it closed down in the 80's . The guy I met inherited his estate life long friends. Graduated together went to war together rockhounded together more brothers then friends I spent a day listening to his story watching as I can see him remembering them days as he talked about some of their time together. That is a cool story. I'm glad he got up with someone who appreciates the stories. Makes them more than just rocks. Yeah it was a good day. His friend was a very accomplished silver Smith lapidary artist. In fact he showed me a whole traveling display case of work created by his friend. I thought I took a photo but cannot find it. Looking forward to some more stories.

Really nice "specimens" but these could easily not be Coprolite and be some other form of agate or cryptocrystalline mix. Any idea on where these were collected from? I haven't ruled out coral yet. I think this is a cool theme for this month, so I knocked out a cab tonight for the contest. Finished size is 2" wide, 1.5" high. I've got to say for a resolution I'd like to do more smithing. I sure need the practice! here's the slab, a 1 cab wonder Here's the finished cab - reminds me of a snowstorm my wife & I experienced in Colorado in May of '96 when we were trying to drive up to Durango Nice cab. I remember that blizzard we got snow drifts that covered some houses here. Kids where jumping off the second story balconies of my neighbors my kids where 1 and 2 back then. Memories thanks.

I don't know, either, but it looks like it would cut some very pretty cabs. Where did you pick it up? I will try and can't a piece today. As far as where I got it. Long story short I stop at a yard sale in the fall. The guy their was into rocks I bought a couple things. We went to the back yard and wow. Is all I could say. He gave me to chunks of turquoise no charge . I came home made a pendant with some of it. Took it back the next day. He and his wife loved it. He offered me a 5gal. Bucket of what ever I chose from the remnants of what was left of one of my towns only rock shops. There was a lot of material in barrels an crates.so I picked a bit of bigger cutters and top it off with these pieces. I plan on taking a couple more finished pieces to him.

Hello all. I picked up a few pounds of this material not really knowing what it was. It felt solid and heavy, and looked interesting so I packed some in my bucket. Anyone know what it might be? Most of it is small cutter size. I would imagine it would tumble beautifully. The next pictures are dry no flash. Next photo is wet withflash. This wet photo shows close to natural colors. To me it looks like moss agate. Nice colors and smokey clear areas. Any thoughts thank you.

Wow. Seriously great works. Along with the two side view and panels in frames. The work it self older single layer non_overlaping threads and newer style of overlapping styles. The 2 I have look single layer and not as detailed I will post photos of the two I picked up as soon as I can. Thanks for the info.

johnw the group is great. I agree the action of their movement is outstanding. That is one thing that fascinates me about antiques. Their Meir existence in a time and world so different at their time. One can only imagine. After reading some of your threads. Yesterday I came across a pair of silk embroidered pictures. They caught my eye because your thread thanks. They look to be older then I thought originally. I'm thinking about opening the backs up to see if there is any evidence of age. The picture's are of a man and a woman both holding umbrella in the rain.
