The little black things could be drumfish teeth. You really want to watch that digging in the side of the bank. It's a great way to get the site closed down to everybody and/or have the overburden come down on top of you. This is a huge issue in the fossil collecting world. Check out what happened in Summerville South Carolina -- bank digging gets sites closed. I LOVE LOVE LOVE looking for shark teeth, but there is a lot of backlash against the activity because of bank destruction. I know this comes off as a scold, but when I (finally) get a chance to get back out fossil hunting I want some areas to still be available to me.

Those pics of poison ivy vines would do well in a horror movie.

Poison ivy and poison parsnip. I am terribly sensitive to them. My blisters and scabs last for weeks, the scars last for years.
FUN FACT#1: Blistered skin has no UV protection and thus you can get a serious sunburn in addition to your poison ivy. Even covered by a shirt and SPF 30. My hand looked like something from a horror movie, and the stabbing pains were awful.
FUN FACT#2: Dishwashing detergent (for hand-washing dishes, not for machine-washing)is good at removing the nasty toxic plant oils.
FUN FACT#3: These plant oils can get transferred from surface to surface, for example, from plant to hat to hands. And that's how I got poison ivy inside my ear.

Hi folks, just a little note to let you know that I'm still kicking. Haven't been on for a while. I think both of my tumblers have died. Been thinking of trying to fire one up again. Still collecting rock of course but haven't gone anywhere or done anything for a while.

This is a totally B movie, but it turned out to be pretty good.
I would love to hear that trailer voice-over with completely different images...

I have observed that some people want to be in closed-in places. They simply must surround themselves with lots of trees, buildings, etc, as their dwelling place. Others, like myself, are uncomfortable in such environments and seek wide-open spaces with long views. I have a very basic theory that some types of people developed in the woods for countless generations, and other on the plains.

Oh, that's funny... I posted a row of question marks, I had no idea they'd come out with that face instead!

Well, if you see a place named, say, Agate Beach, suggest that would be a good place for a picnic... I once stupidly went to "Moonstone Beach" and didn't think to look for any moonstones. I never made that mistake again! Never miss an opportunity to poke around wherever you are. I've found fossils in the bank next to a gas station, and artifacts, crystals, and fossils in parking lots. If you are interested in gold panning, bring one and a trowel along... I panned in a creek next to a hotel once. Didn't find anything (only had a few minutes)but it was fun to try! With a pan and decent technique, you can also find garnets, magnetites, and other heavier minerals even if you don't find gold. Always have little baggies in your pockets just in case, and bring along a couple permanent markers to write location/date on the bags. Good luck!

If you have a chance check out Carrizo Plains National Monument. I don't think any collecting is allowed, but very interesting geologically speaking. It's where the Wallace Creek offset of the San Andreas Fault is. You can stand in it. There are some petroglyphs in the Monument too I think, check on their website. Also check with them on the road conditions through. I don't know how much traveling you've done in central/northern CAL, but my advice is bring water, and lots of it! Some of these areas are pretty remote, and a minor vehicle breakdown can become a life-or-death situation without plenty of water on board.

Do you have any pictures of your "weird" collections? Some weirder things I own... samples of cloth made from tree bark from the "Sandwich Islands" (Hawaii) circa 1812; a bone fid from a sailing vessel;an ashtray made from melted-down metal from the USS Constitution; a 12-pound brass shot-put; a WW2 medical blanket, and a doctor's bag that may have been used at Andersonville prison pen. Oh, and an antique glass eye, but those are pretty common.
