Funny, when I was a kid I cut a hell of a lot of neighbors lawns. Pulled a hell of a lot of weeds from neighbors gardens, and did a hell of a lot of other odd jobs. Just so I could afford to buy my first $85.00 car. Did a lot of jobs for 25 - 50 cents per hour, so I could afford the things I really wanted or needed. My parents couldn't afford to buy them for me, and wouldn't have even if they could afford it. I learned the value of hard work. I blame the parents who bought and gave their kids everything for the "you owe it to me" mentality that we now have.

*L* You are right Helen, our trade policies suck and also the money the immigrants send home is just as much a drain on our economy as is foreign aid and has even been referred to as " the other foreign aid". if, I'm not wrong, I think I read somewhere that American dollars sent home to Mexico are a major driver of the Mexican economy.
While much farm labor is piece work, much is not too. At many of the hundreds of farm companies I worked with, the pickers were given the choice of piece work or per hour salary and usually chose piece work because it paid more if you were a fast picker. Some crops, like strawberries take uncanny skill to pick while others like citrus, apples etc not much except motor skills. All can be learned with a little time. Many of my growers tried white folks as pickers a few times but the folks were flat out too damn lazy, had short attention spans, and could make more on government handouts. I might add the white workers complaint was lack of acceptance and being made to feel unwanted and ostracized by the often illegal, Hispanic crew who of course babbled on in Spanish all day to entertain themselves and exclude the American citizen worker. The Hispanics after all, wanted the jobs for their tribe. I've heard this same complaint from the white teens who try to take a summer job at their local So. Calif. Maccy D's only to find the rest of the crew are Mexicans who won't even communicate with them in English and want the American teen to fail so they can get the job for their illegal cousin sneaking up from Mexico.
It should also be noted that many of the AG jobs taken from Americans by illegals are not picking jobs so picking speed is of course of no concern. AG companies employ lots of truckers, fork lift drivers and warehouse personnel where speed is not a requirement but perhaps working cheaper than an American is. That's why folks who hire illegals need to be stopped from doing so.
Sure, farmers might suffer for a while while American workers were trained but if the workers were hungry enough, you can bet the learning curve would be much faster. If you look at history, where did the fruit pickers used in California during the dust bowl years come from? They were all Texans and Okies. These were still Americans. These were the folks my dad grew up working with in the orchards, and they picked and packed fruits and veggies just fine because they wanted to work. Just as an aside, my dad and my grandad actually won trophies at orange crate building contests and my dad's I sister was a state champion citrus packer back when each fruit was wrapped in paper and placed in a pretty wooden crate. I actually got to see my aunt packing when I was a little kid and her hands fairly flew. Maybe white men can't jump, but they are capable of working fast, if you can actually give them the incentive to work and not an incentive to "not work".
Oh, and one more quick story. I was at Wally world buying my monthly ammo the other day and couldn't get help in sporting goods. After fetching a manager I discussed with him the problem which is reoccurring. Seems Wally world has lots of job openings but has a drug test requirement and more than 90% of the local applicants here in rural Texas fail the test. I guess if they're gonna sit home and smoke dope or take meth all day while on the government dole, the unemployed jackasses around here might just have a little trouble finding work. Do ya think?......Duh! And I imagine this is pretty much true nation wide. Maybe if these slugs didn't sell their food stamp card for cash so they could buy weed, this would not be a problem ...Mel

Wasn't just Texans and Okies Mel. My dad and an uncle drove from Ohio to California in a Model A Ford to work in the fields. I still have an album of pics they took along the way.

Mel, I worked for a fast food chain (maintenance dept) years ago. At one of the Riverside, CA locations INS showed up looking for an employee who happened to be off that day. He was scheduled to work the next day so INS said they would be back then. The manager came in and found herself alone. Every employee was illegal and working with forged (all provided the manager with what looked like legitimate ID when hired) documents. My now brother in law from Scotland came to the US as a visitor, met my sister and wanted to move here. To stay he needed a job but couldn't get a job without a green card. His step dad (a former illegal mexican legallized under the amnesty program) told him he could get him a green card. When he got it it said his name was "Tomas" rather than Thomas. He returned to Scotland and did it legally. What a concept.

I was just thinking Charlie must be falling out of his chair laughing after starting this. Gets all us old fart, heartless conservatives trying to pound some sense into the loveable but wrong Helen. And, the Obama Care subject dropped out of site several pages ago.

Now if only we could get some candidates who realize the only way to make this country fly again is to find some way to get our flapping left wings to work together with your flapping right wings....
Nobody is going to be 100% happy but we can at least all have a chance.

*L* Here's another interesting story about immigration except this time to Australia. I worked on a seed certification program with an American kid of German extraction who's last name was Jose, pronounced JOS. He was married to another friend of mine, a blond haired blue eyed gal who looked as American as apple pie. The husband was red haired and blue eyed. Both had Ag degrees and many skills so they decided they wanted to immigrate to Australia and filled out their papers. Well, they were quickly DENIED! without even an interview. Aussies, apparently having quotas on Hispanics, didn't want any more Joses ( Hozays) moving to their country *L* Living on an island continent does have it's advantages for enforcing immigration laws....Mel
PS. Worked with another biologist who was actually arrested in Mexico for being a reverse illegal. He was hired by a friend at an AG firm down there and snuck in without proper visas etc. *L* This same fellow was arrested in China for being a tourist and taking up residence outside permitted tourist zones where he was living high on a few bucks a day. Seems nobody in the world likes Yankee illegals except, they all do something about it *L*.

Interesting thread, though Mel us Aussies are having the same troubles in that on the island continent they come by the boatload through the back door and then get free health, food and accomadation while waiting to be given residence. We have medicare , have had from the 80's and the waiting lists are only getting bigger. I paid 1/3 of my wage last week in tax it sucks. Our latest is the booming mining industry are screaming for overseas tradies, You will have a better chance of getting a start there than me as they are advertising in the U.S. If you have a chance go for it thats all from me. Interesting Bill, I had not known that. If I might ask, where are your illegals boating in from, Borneo or Indonesia or some such?.....Mel

I think Australia's non immigration of minorities ended some time ago. I have a cousin that had an R&R in Australia and wanted to move there when his hitch in the Army was over. He ended up marrying a nice Thai girl. He applied to immigrate and was welcomed. His wife was not. This was late 60's or early 70's. 30% tax? I think my English relatives said tax rates are something like 60% or 70% there. Free medical costs a lot. We have a lot to look forward to here in the USA.

And all of the Obamacare supporters wonder why the Canadians and Britts that can afford it, come here for medical treatment. They already have Socialist medical care.

My cousin, who lives in London and LOVES it there, crappy 70% tax and all, says AMERICANS go over THERE for health care, and every year more and more Americans try to move there (like he did). Hrm.

Helen, having spent 3-1/2 years in G.B., I'd live in Scotland or Whales, but not England. Too many foreigners in England. And lots of radicalized Muslims.

Mel The illegals get themselves to Indonesia, there they destroy their papers buy a boat ticket from the people smugglers and sail across. in the last month there has been a couple that have sunk with loss of lives but they still keep coming, there's a lot of politics about it at the moment, as well as just having a carbon tax added on the 1st of July, thats to fix global warming of course

According to the site www.internationalliving.com, health care in Mexico is described as very good to excellent while being highly affordable, with every medium to large city in Mexico having at least one first-rate hospital. In fact, some California insurers sell health insurance policies that require members to go to Mexico for health care where costs are 40% lower. Some of Mexico's top-rate hospitals are internationally accredited. Residents of USA, particularly those living near the Mexican border, now routinely cross the border into Mexico for medical care. Popular specialties include dentistry and plastic surgery. Mexican dentists often charge 20 to 25 percent of US prices, while other procedures typically cost a third what they would cost in the US. The www.internationalliving.com site states that on average, an office visit with a doctor—specialists included—will cost about US$25, an overnight stay in a private hospital room costs about $35, and a visit to a dentist for teeth cleaning costs about $20.
