Thanks, Bill. Always so good to hear from you! Paulshiroma, it's a very cool place to get to. Nice and family friendly. But as you approach, off highway 1, you have to watch your mileage because the locals have removed the Bolinas turn-off sign. Once down in there, you have to walk up, north, the beach about a 1/4 mile or so to where a little canyon opens up onto the beach and there you can start to find the agates. There is also some jade and jasper there and I've even found some whale bone there. Just keep an eye on the tides, as they come in quick. Good luck when you go. It's very beautiful there.

Hi Toad. Well, Started all of them in 60 grit S/C. The smaller ones were done in a couple weeks and the larger took a few more weeks, (in 60). A good amount of those went into 80 Grit S/C for a few more weeks. Again, most of the small ones were ready for Med. When all were ready, they went into 220 grit S/C, and that was about 2-3 rounds of 10 days each. They were very hard. Now maybe the next step was overkill but they all went into 400 grit S/C for 12 days and then 600 S/C for about 2 weeks. I 'burnished' them after that and then they went into pre-polish for 10 days. Burnish again and then into A/O polish for 2 weeks. Burnish, then into Cerium Oxide for another 2 weeks. A final burnish (Ivory flakes). And done.

Very interesting. Wire wrapping taken to a higher level. The back is lookin' like a piece of the background of an H.R. Giger painting. Get some tiny silver skulls in there and take it even farther. A mix of natural, (the stone), and futuristic Industrial. I like it!

Yes, the main question is 'what kind of rock' are you working with? There are some stubborn rocks out there that wont take a shine no matter what you do. Perhaps you could post some pictures of them and I'm sure some of the knowledgeable folks on this site can get you pretty far along if not all the way to a near perfect shine. Like Jack (Yorkshire) says, there are many factors working all at the same time. -Chris.

Hi Paul. If you have a piece that you really like but has some dings in it, you can always grind them off by hand,(machine or hand grinder) then throw them back in with the next coarse or medium load. Plastic pellets in 'fine and 'polish' is another good tip.

Hi Paul. Yes, most of the places we hit up are in the Gem Trails book. Also Rockhounding California By Gail Butler is another good source. Try Kramer Hills, @ the 395 and 57. And Gem Hill in Rosamond, for a couple more family friendly locations. Good hunting, - Chris.

Nice! Been wanting to go out there. You say it's fairly easy access? Is 4 wheel drive needed at any point?

Now those are lookin' real good! The golden inclusions could be rutile or maybe saginite.

Using this page because it's got the best shine! Does one use Cerium Oxide after 100,000 grit Diamond paste or before, or are they about the same? (For most hard stones, on a felt backing). And, is 600 grit S/C the same as Pre-Polish? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, -Chris
