x2 on Rob's comments. Marines do the same thing - make use of all available tools to win. Beautiful piece.

I might be standing out in the cold on this opinion, Jim but I tend to include the context (sentimental value?) and whether or not I have samples of the rock in my collection as part of the value. Quartz, while common, is a pretty rock and when it contains some color like yours, I usually end up keeping it as a display piece. Especially when they're as large as yours. I've also got a nice, dinner plate sized, piece of mica. Admittedly, it's just mica but being more of a collector, I found it quite interesting. My boys tend to bring home a lot of leaverite but we keep it as it's something they found at a particular location on one of our rockhounding trips. Value? In their stories of what we did!

Up for either. If we do the south Cady's I'll bring Andrew and Nathaniel along. Probably just be me if we do the north Cady's.

This looks like it's shaping up to t be a fun trip. While I voted for the first weekend in Nov, I'm relatively flexible and will have to check on school and sports events as we get closer. I may have to hitch a ride with someone though. I think my girl (4WD) is hinting that she wants a divorce. Within the last 250 miles, I've had electrical problems, transmission problem and now the left front CV joint has decided to go. She's beginning to cost me a lot of money.

x2 on Mel's commments. I used to keep a water garden but never had a chance to see how the plants are cultivated - learned something new today, thanks! Quite the setup, James.

So, the phones arrived Thursday and we go them up and running that night. Republic Wireless took care of transferring our existing phone numbers from Sprint to our new phones and cancelled our Sprint service for us. By Friday night, we had our numbers transferred and Saturday our Sprint service was cancelled. Whoo hoo! Excellent customer service from Republic. They made the transfer process amazingly simple, quick and painless. The DEFT XT is smaller than my iPhone5 Company phone and, frankly, easier to carry. I really don't like the size of the iPhone. Obviously, the DEFY is considerably larger than my old flip phone. Here's a quick run down on my purely subjective impressions, thus far: Phone Service: While on cellular service, I can't tell the difference between the three phones. All three perform just fine - no dropped calls, no interruptions, etc. I do notice that my Cable internet service isn't up to handling VoIP. I do have the base level ATT service so that's no surprise. I may upgrade my internet service but we'll see. I don't live on my cell phone so this may not be an issue. Data Service: Works just fine. Our office building is notoriously difficult on data via cellular service and the Republic Wireless (Sprint) 3G network performs just as well as the iPhone5 Verizon 4G network inside our building. Can't tell the difference - download speeds were equivalent and I was able to send email and check baseball scores with ease on either phone. There was no discernible difference between my iPhone5 and my DEFT XT. I'm sure there is some techie who will disagree with me and be able to prove a difference, but to my subjective impressions, they were equivalent. I will say it was great being able to check baseball scores while we were all having lunch following church services. Text: I haven't figured out texting yet. Not the phone's fault; it's actually me. I've never had a phone that could handle texts until now so I haven't tried this option yet. Actually, I haven't had the need to text anyone yet either. So, for $19 a month (per line) I'm quite pleased. I also prefer the overall size of the DEFT XT to my iPhone5 company phone. I like the screen resolution and screen size of the iPhone but not enough to make me want to get one. And, frankly, the Sprint plan to upgrade to a Republic equivalent was obnoxious (over $200 per month for Barbara and I). Poor photo of a side by side. Sorry for the resolution. Rushed this on in low light tonight. I will say that moving between and Android OS and the Apple OS sometimes causes me to cross mental wires but that's not a big deal. Just my age showing. LOL

Yeah, I am good all four weekends too. paulshiroma or anybody local. Would you like to make a day trip to scout the roads and camping areas? Yes, but let me get back to you on this. I'm beginning to think my LandCruiser isn't happy with me. Two weeks after getting it back for some electrical and, admittedly minor, transmission work, I'm getting a new "thumping" sound from my left front wheel well. All sorts of bad things are going through my mind ... U-joint, birfield, front diff ... ugh . I'm going to take it in tomorrow. But, yes, let's plan something for a day-trip to do some scouting.

Mel, I'm really impressed by how fracture-free those slabs seem to be. Those are really beautiful pieces. Thanks for sharing the photos and the intel. Tried Basin Road one time with my Intrepid about two years back. Quickly turned around ... yikes that was rough.

Lowell (elementary) has been back there at least twice using the Basin Road offramp. I ventured about two miles south on Basin Road using my Intrepid a couple of years back. Had to turn around pretty quickly as it got sandy in a hurry and my Intrepid was definitely NOT appreciating things. If we do this, I think I'd rather have several 4wd vehicles to lessen the chance of the "rescue" vehicle needing rescue and being out of luck And, to Mel's point, someone from VGMS or Searchers (Or several someone's) as the guides. You have a good plan. I selected a data but will have to be tentative for now. I can firm it up as we get closer to the end of the year. Thanks for getting this organized. Paul

Welcome to the forum, Larry. I'm not sure what "stone plugs" are but I'm sure one of the artists can help around here. I'm more into the collecting side of things vs. the jewelry/cabbing side. Love seeing people's work, though. Where were you fishing in that photo? Looks like a great time.
