Eh, my first grind is naked. SiC costs money and is destroyed in the first week of grinding so I lite load the barrel with 70% rock and slightly underfill with water. That's it. Let it grind to shape as naked grinding knocks off the sharp edges and knobs thus producing a pretty good (agate)grinding media and slurry mix. After that I can coarse grind for a week or ten days (or longer) for fine tuning the shapes. After that go to medium then pre-polish and final polish. It is what works for me and my Lortone QT12. Best, and welcome.

Hello blaavinge, from Atlanta, Georgia. Your mountains sound like mine, only, you know, there are no trolls here.
I hope that you persevere with this hobby and write to tell and show us all how your skills improve.

YES! That's what I'm talking about. Your pictures are waaaaay better than mine. So, yes I will look into taptalk; sounds real useful. The reds and darker (brownish) reds that I found the other week were not this bright but maybe now I can get some pictures out. And I found all of it on the middle bench to the right of the entrance.
Thanks all.

Hey fantastic, good to hear your voice again. Took a bunch of pictures but cannot get them to load on my work computer to send to this page. Dang! Anyway I was at the mine just this past Sunday. Only one there all day long. Have plenty of lace agate so went after the red/purple/pink/white jasper that does indeed tumble easily and finishes to a high bright shine in no time. I'd heard that hard rock was being found but I didn't see it until I was ready to leave. So I filled a bucket with the darker red stuff and some black with bright red streaks stuff. And I filled another bucket with that beautiful creamy light violet stuff that I still have not identified. Would love to show everyone what I have but.... Maybe its my talkie machine thing. Dunno.

Interesting! Aren't there such a wondrous variety of trilobites? Some of the ones common in Wisconsin are rare or absent here in Vermont. Most common in northwestern Vermont, where I live, are Triarthrus. In fact I picked up a head of one yesterday while dog sitting. We are all covered in snow here, but down on the shore, big chunks of ice had been pushed up from the lake, and stuck to ice were some rocks, so naturally I had to go down and see. Of course I fell down in the snow, but it was worth it because I was able to pluck a little fossil out of a chunk of ice that had pushed up waist-high. Seeing that always make me think of the effect the glaciers had on the landscape. We have some isotelus here too, not very common but I saw one a few years ago the guy was using for a doorstop! And there is a good source about 20 miles from here for cryptolithus. They are super-cool, but I've only ever found parts. "Trilo-bits" I call them. Oh please tell me that you share your online time with the Fossil Forum? We love this kind of stuff. Best

Hey cowboy, you need to saddle up and visit the closest thrift store or Good Will location for cheap rock tools. I purchased a $20 7inch tile saw five years ago and its still going strong. Keep looking if you don't find one the first time; I've seen several over the years.

Please, your voice is fabulous! I think that to sell your creations without brag, you should invest your pitch to sharing this item; fully. You clearly are passionate about your work and that comes through in any sales pitch. Best of luck to you and your work.

Why wait for Quartzite when you can just visit the north Georgia mountains for the best spread of beautiful minerals?

Welcome to the RTH home. Would you send us a picture of your newly acquired slab please? It would in the words of Dr. Phil "help us to help you".
