^^^^^ Very nice write up, thanks.
I live in the town of Toquerville, about 25 miles from St George. We did a lot of hiking when we moved to Utah 12 years ago, in 2012 we totaled a Wrangler and it's slowed us down, I'm 73. My wife is always poking the ground as she hikes and just picks up fun rocks. We have a good collection of non-agatized PW and Agate from the Brianhead area. This particular rock fascinated us, where did it tumble from, how many miles, years? Like I said, it would take a backhoe to get it. I'll measure it when I go in the Fall.
I frequent the Dixie National Forest quite a bit, so many different units to explore. My Summer fun was cut into by the Brianhead fire, burned 70,000 acres of Dixie N.F. "Forced" me to go to Milford on Saturday for a load of Obsidian, very hot! Next trip will be to an area of PW for smaller pieces to tumble. I'm hooked!

Win What are the rough dimensions for calculating it's weight? Someone here can probably give you ideas of how to do something about getting it home. How close can you get a trailer or truck? . Fun and pretty yard rock for sure. Bet lots of folks have seen that beauty. It's across a river from where we park, pretty rough terrain. Not sure if it's where we last saw it, it's 100+ so I'm not going back until it cools off. I'd love to have it but it's not going to happen, probably take a front end loader to reach it, too rough for a Bobcat. We've never seen anyone else there but I know people know about the area.

I would be doin some head scratching trying to figure out how to get that one home . We did, I think we went back a few times. It's been a few years, a few flash floods, maybe it moved closer to the area we park!

We took a ride up to Brianhead on Saturday, the road to the peak had just opened. BH is one lucky town, wind from another direction and it would have been a real tragedy. We talked to and thanked a couple of fire personnel, met pilot a that was working the fire, he confirmed about the winds. Didn't collect any rocks, we'll go back soon, though. You can see in the center of the picture where it started: Temporary antennae for fire control use: Some hot spots and the main area to the right:

The BH fire is a real shame, apparently started by a careless homeowner. I frequent that area all Summer and am more than a little upset at this. The Agate I collected off Brianhead is what got me to this Forum and into a little tumbling! I've photographed that area extensively, I'll have the pictures/memories but never see it like that again in my lifetime. I especially love 2nd Left Hand Canyon out of Parowan, I don't know how much of it burned but the fire did go through there. A couple from my files.

I love driving the Burr Trail, glad you enjoyed it and stopped to take pictures! So many people drive by that short slot canyon which is really nice!

Really nice piece of wood there! Is that up on Hurricane Mess? My husband's Uncle lives in Hurricane and we've been up to that party of the park a few times. Very pretty! It's not Hurricane Mesa, it's the Dalton Wash Trail, same area, though. There's a little used hiker's gate into Zion, lots of P-Wood all over. I took a friend up here and while I was in the wash he was on the bench looking around when he came across this area. By exploring outside the NP, I've found a great collecting area, small to mid-sized pieces, my second tumble will be wood from there.

Welcome to the forum from Cedar City. Are you in St. George? Lynn We're in Toquerville, always heading to the Cedar area during the Summer.

Moved to Utah about 12 years ago and have accumulated rocks/petrified wood over that time. I decided my wife needed another chore so I bought a tumbler. so far so good. We're only into our third weeks with some local agate and it's coming fine. I joined here to learn more and have a place to ask questions as I progress.
