Well, I cut it close but it is still March so I made it. I finally had a chance to sit down and wrap. So here's the back story (and yes, I know, pictures or it didn't happen). In May, 2016 I went on a rockhounding trip with RTH and another forum that no longer exists. I took my friend Frank along too. The trip took us to McDermitt, NV and OR. Here's what the bustling town of McDermitt looked like (yep, this was downtown). We spent several days camping and exploring the area both with the group and on our own. At that time a majority of the area was still open to collecting and Gary Green was still called Gary Green (it's now Freedom Jasper). One of the days we went to the area known for having Gary Green. It was a beautiful day and wildflowers were blooming all over the area. You could see pieces of Gary Green all over the ground although most of the surface material was really broken up and fractured. Two older gentlemen were digging in a large hole when we pulled up to park and we didn't pay much attention to them. A few others from our group were walking around the area picking up rocks so we did the same until Frank got hungry. We decided to take a break from walking around and eat lunch on the tailgate of my pickup. We watched the two men dig in their hole for about 20 minutes while we ate. Eventually they dragged a couple of big chunks of Gary Green to their waiting pickup truck and asked if we would like a few tips before they left. Of course we said yes. I didn't get their names of pictures but they told us basically to dig where they had been digging. They said a lot of the material on top was fractured and well picked over but bigger nicer chunks were hidden just below the surface. So we finished our lunch and as they pulled away we went into the hole to dig. Needless to say they were right and we came away with a few nice sized chunks of Gary Green.
View of Gary Green in situ
This is the chunk that produced the slab that produced the cab that I wire wrapped for the challenge. The wire wrap: front
Back That trip was so much fun. I'm glad we went and also glad that I got a chance to relive the trip doing this challenge.

Thanks Jason. Glad you liked it. I can't stand calling it Freedom Jasper either. It's always gonna be Gary Green in my eyes. I am so grateful I was able to go there and collect before it got claimed. I don't know if they still allow collecting but I'm sure not since they are digging 15+ feet down or so I've heard.

Didn't know if I was going to participate in this one or not. Haven't done a wrap for a little bit though so I really wanted to do one. This is a piece of Mariposa that I collected a couple of years ago and then tumbled. Went with my brother who was up here visiting and my dad. Thinking about it now. That was definitely the last trip the three of us did together. This is my first time wrapping a non-cabochon rock.

drocknut, love your story so much I almost forgot to look at the great cab and wrap. Thank you so much for sharing! rockbrain, it always takes a while for me to conquer a tumbled stone wrap, and you did it to perfection. To say nothing of a great tumble of, shall we say, "cantankerous" material!

Wow, super cool story and pics and giant GG (aka Freedom) chunk and slab and cab and wrap drocknut ! I’m jealous of your trip, being able to dig that back then. Pretty wrap as well, the stone is able to show off and the silver looks good with the green.👍

Wow Diane, drocknut ,you blew me away with the story & photos. Interesting, seeing that large chunk in the ground, it looks like you might take a hammer & cold chisel and get a layer off. How cool ! Your wrap is a wonderful compliment to the stones pattern & in my book definitely gets extra credit for the wonderful shape of green and the great story. Thanks for sharing it, Patty

Great job wrapping that tumble, rockbrain! Beautiful stone and story, too. I have never tried to wrap a tumbled stone, so I don't know that I would be able to do it!

To say nothing of a great tumble of, shall we say, "cantankerous" material! Thank you! Mariposite can be interesting. This stuff is actually fairly hard. Pretty wrap and story rockbrain ! Nice way to remember that trip. Life goes by fast. Thanks, Khara. Boy does it ever and it keeps speeding up the closer I get to the other end! rockbrain , well you made the tumbled stone look easy ! Somehow, I bet it ain't.

It wasn't too bad. It's got unusually high dome but it was somewhat cab shape. Great job wrapping that tumble, rockbrain ! Beautiful stone and story, too. I have never tried to wrap a tumbled stone, so I don't know that I would be able to do it! Thanks, I was planning on doing a cage wrap and I still need to work on that. rockbrain - Fantastic job on wrapping that tumble! Who from the trip is getting this one? Well, my dad passed last year so it would have to be my brother. My brother wouldn't want it! But, now that you've reminded me I'm going to make him something. He actually slabbed the first piece of the material from that trip for me as he had just bought a 10" tile saw.

Thanks for sharing it, Patty Thank you Patty liveoak. I'm glad you liked both the story and the wrap. I had forgotten I had that cab until I got to looking around for green cabs made from rock I collected. As I said before I don't have too many green cabs especially that I collected but I do have a few. I have fond memories from that McDermitt trip and it just seemed to fit for the challenge. I kept the wrap simple since I was pressed for time plus that cab needed to be the center of attention. I'm definitely more minimalist when doing wraps, guess that's my style. I did think of looking for a tutorial for something more fancy but time and my style won out this time. Thanks for the extra credit, I love getting extra credit ;-) Diane

Way cool trip and way cool cab, Diane! Love the wrap and the story. Thank you. It was a cool trip although I could have done without seeing the snakes there. Including the bull snake that didn't like us driving on "His" road.
