Yeah, the Tyson Wells people who aren't at Tyson Wells will be at the PowWow most likely, and only thing I ever bought there recently was some stabilizing epoxy from the tool place that turned out to be date expired stuff that didn't work.

Who is Tyson wells, and what does he do? Chicken... Oops, wrong Tyson. It's a mixed sales venue in Q, some rock stuff and some other stuff. There's a RV supplies vendor I may visit if time permits, I seem to remember they had something I liked, but last year we planned to change trailers so we passed. At least one vendor probably there who I would like to visit with, but 2 days ain't much during the PowWow.

Just got home, had a great time, met some and met others again. We had a large turnout this year though we were sorry to hear Bob had delays and couldn't make it. And a little memorial, Absolutely awesome Thank you Lee for the video and to everyone who participated in honoring our members with a memorial. I didn't see the lanterns coming but that was a fantastic idea and kudos to whomever came up with it. It kind of stabs me in the feels that I couldn't get it together to come and join you all but it is what it is. In Napa this is our slow season and we usually sock money aside all year to ride it out, but we've been putting every extra penny into the Mariposa house renovation and it really caught up with us.

Tony, Walter and I enjoyed visiting with you late Weds and were sure looking forward to your BBQ on Fri night. Now that I'm back, can tell here what happened.
We worked the lavic jasper on Fri morning. I tried to use the directions you gave me in relation to the military border, but could not figure it all out. But, we lucked out anyway and found ourselves in the middle of it. I had been there 6-7 years ago, found nothing but cruddy and porous pieces, and thrown it all back. This time it was high quality and we got plenty and were excited and happy.
We headed toward Quartzite at about 1:30 facing a 3:15 drive. Boom! A tire blowout doing 75mph on the interstate after driving about 20 miles. It happened as we were passing a truck and I speculate something got airborn toward us from the truck. The sidewall had a big hole in it and I nearly burned myself from the steam coming out of that hole. What's really weird is I have feared a front blowout all my life but had never had one. I figured one would lose control of the vehicle and careen off the hwy. But even though I was on my rim in seconds the steering was easy. I was in a 2024 4Runner and own a 2015 myself. How it could be that way is beyond me. If anyone reading this has also had a front blowout and found the steering easy I'd like to hear about it. By easy I mean nothing happened, no strain against the steering wheel at all.
It took an hour to change the spare, which was really scary with 18 wheelers rushing by at 80mph 6' away! Hope to never repeat that. Walter stood out back hoping they would see him too to increase safety. The truck was rented from Budget and I was hoping they would say go by a new tire in some city so we would still make it. But no, they have to switch out vehicles so we had to choose between Ontario, CA and Las Vegas.
We called Mark on way to Vegas hoping word would reach you. That took over 2 hours and tied us up so we could not then drive another 3:15 from there to Quartzite.

Tommy I feel ya for sure on the money issue, day before we left I went to an estate and purchased an enclosed trailer with the pitiful bit of rock money we got from the Flagg show this year. Since we're a lot closer than you the trip still happened, but not counting the piece of variscite on the Rodneys family benefit table I spent more on coffee and meals at the shows than I did on rocks and slept in the van in the parking lot Friday night. Elizabeth and Taco stayed at home, she is going through back issues and sharing an air bed with me and the dog was not a good plan. Bob we did get the message from Mark, sorry we missed you and happy that you were safe. I've been through more than one highway blowout and they can be pretty scary depending on the vehicle.

While buying 10 lbs of inferno jasper again from Martin at the PowWow, something interesting happened. One rock was kind of weird and real pale and agatey and looked like it would tumble into something gorgeous. I'd guess it to be about a 2 lb one. When I let Martin weigh my bucket with that one on top he saw it and said "Where did you get this?" and looked very concerned while glancing behind him at the ground which I thought was odd. I replied that it was underneath some inferno jasper. He had visited with me some while I had been digging in that pile a long time to get just the right size pieces needed.
He asked "Do you know what this is?" I said no, but it looks like it has some fortifications and some tubular agate areas in it and I think it's pretty. He exclaimed this is a rock that sells for $45/lb and is the famous Laguna agate my father named and discovered decades ago. He said it was a primo specimem that would not only tumble nicely, it would be a spectacular rock when done because it's 100% solid. I was speechless. Then he pointed to the pile of it behind him where he can keep an eye on it and asked me again if I found it where I said. He said that in a polite friendly way not an accusing way. I understood now his concern. I noticed at that time that the pile behind him didn't have any rocks in it that looked larger than maybe 1/4 lb. I gave the agate to him and said sorry never knew anything about all this and have heard of Laguna agate but have never bought any nor did I know what it looked like.
He put it back in my bucket, said no problem he knows I'm telling the truth and said it's all still $15/lb like the inferno. So when he said I owe him $150 I tried to give him more but he would not accept it! I felt terrible, and happy, at the same time.
He speculated that this is what happened. He said the inferno jasper and some other things used to be hidden under piles of laguna many years ago. When he got all the laguna out, he was careful to get it all, but must have missed this one piece. He could hardly believe it made it all the way through loading and unloading though to Quartzite.
The odd thing is when I first saw this pale piece of what I believed to be inferno jasper in the inferno jasper pile, I nearly set it aside w/o even looking at it believing it to be some crappy piece that wasn't worth examining.

On Thursday we went into the southern foothills of the Orocopia Mountains between Indio and Desert City looking for bloodstone as reported by a rockhounding guide. Didn't find much of anything, and had trouble reconciling directions and map drawings to the actual areas and its many confusing roads (typical for the desert of course). Only found a few misc. jaspers and stuff worth keeping in the first 6 hours and were pretty disappointed. However, late in the afternoon in a canyon wash I was stunned to see a gorgeous piece of lemon-size primo green bloodstone laying in the dust. Wow, had never seen this material in the field. I spent the next couple of hours scouring all around, up to 1/4 mi around, including up steep slopes, and didn't find but a couple more real lousy porous pieces. And both of them were down in the dust not far from the primo piece. If anyone knows about bloodstone in this area I would sure like to hear from them.

Elizabeth and Taco stayed at home, she is going through back issues and sharing an air bed with me and the dog was not a good plan. For us the original plan had all the bells and whistles including us putting the dogs up in a kennel, driving my truck, staying in a hotel(s), and even hitting a few rockhounding spots on the way down. As available work vanished the plan got whittled down a few times until the final plan that still had a flicker of hope even as recent as the first week of January was for me to come alone and dogless for a quick down and back from the Mariposa house, sleeping in the back of my wife's Outback with it's 30+ mpg . The decision ultimately came down to my work offered me a multiple day job that covered the entire weekend of the 20th and I could not in good conscious say no to it. Yeah hummingbirdstones rockjunquie - add me to the list of bawlers I can't even sit through a stupid movie without getting all misty eyed and leaky. It's so annoying lol.

It was great to see you all! I missed seeing all of you that couldn't or didn't make it.
The hamburger was provided by Rodney, he made a trade of some gem silica for half a beef before he passed, so I brought along the gem silica and Joe brought the half a beef and we finished the trade, we used the beef to feed everyone. Prime Black Angus from Oklahoma. I tried to explain it all there but got a little choked up so it got rushed.
I dont know how many of you remember but Rodney and Jamie hosted the first RTH Burro Creek trip almost 2 decades ago, it was my first real rockhounding trip and kind of got me hooked. He and I were like brothers ever since.
Anyways, looking forward to the next get together, we should do something this summer, we have been getting lax in planning trips the past few years, lets get something in the works!!!

I really need to stop being a POS and just make it down. Ended up getting my ass jumped on for the project that so desperately needed to be done that made me miss the show. Project still isn’t finished to no surprise. Dunno what they expected when I had No support or a project manager. Should’ve just told them to suck it and went in the first place.
