Welcome to the first Month long RTH Killer Cab Contest! I hope the month long time frame gives more members a chance to participate. Entries do not have to be started within the time frame of the contest, only finished by the deadline. All entiresl still require a photo of the slab, preform and finished cab. Remember, entries submitted to this contest must be unique to the RTH version of the Killer Cab Contest. I will monitor the other forum(s) for duplicate entries, and any duplicates will be disqualified. Entries are cabs only. Completed during this monthly contest period. Not cabs pulled from the drawer. We include a pic of the original slab, then a pic of the preform, and finally, the finished cab. Please try to remember at least a pic or two of the original slab and or preform. Feel free to share with us what ever you like about the mineral, and or what ever else you would like to share. You can enter any shape cab and your choice of mineral. Things like intarsias, carvings, jewelry, and composite type cabs can not be entered in an effort to keep the contest somewhat fair by just entering free form style cabs. Cabs posted here are only for the contest. Now get cabbing!

I offered to 'sponsor' the May KCC to add a little extra incentive~ The voted 'winner' of May will receive these 3 mini-slabs from my stash to play with! Have fun, and get those wheels powered up!

Well, if no one else is going to enter, I'll start:). This is my 4th finished cab. The slab is courtesy of Krystee, who sent me some gorgeous small cabsized pieces, since I don't yet have a saw. This is the original rock - it's facing the wrong way (the pattern goes through the whole rock tho), but I didn't think to take individual pix of the rock at the time, so I cropped this out of the group shot (wonderful Krystee sent me a whole bag of pieces:)): Here is the preform (through 600 wheel, had to reshape it again after scratching it all up): And here is the final finished, much thinner cab: It's a remarkable rock with a HUGE range of colors that didn't emerge til fully polished, like the blue in the background was grey even when wet, but turned blue after polishing. The top right blob looks like a dandelion seed head... but the rest of it is like an underwater lichen scene. Krystee... do you know what this stone is? It's the most colorful rock I think I've ever seen, thank you again!

Beautiful piece, Helen! Great piece to start with but you did a wonderful job with the shaping and the shine looks perfect! I guess that new machine is working out pretty nicely for you!!!! It's going to be hard to come up with an entry of that quality...but I'll try.

Wow, that is sweet. I really like the inside curve on the left side. It just seems to make it all come together. I do not have anything to compete with that so I guess I will be out again. lol Jim

Jim, who cares about competing? Need to show off what you made, and I know you make some beautiful cabs!! Anyway, the competition lets everyone see some kewl new stones and what you can do with them.
Anyway, I didn't do much as you can see, it was all Krystee... the slab wanted to be a water droplet:).

That turned out sooooo beautiful Helen!!! I do know what it is but I'm a bit hazy right now, just recovering today from a 5 day long migraine that put me in the hospital (never had cluster migraines or any type of headaches before).... my heads not cooperating with me yet. Let me think on it and I'll post when I remember. Unfortunately I didn't start labeling my slabs until a couple of years ago (silly me thought that I could remember the name of every rock in 20 shoe boxes...lol). I had that one for a long time and still have a few pieces of it. I'll remember though soon and post an ID. You totally knocked it out!!!! (bowing down to an amazing cabber!)

Really nice cab Helen. I'm glad you didn't work out that dimple on the top right. That would have taken away to much cool looking material that gives the cab lots of character.

Krystee, I used to get migraines... for no reason, they just stopped completely! If you get an aura before you get the migraine, as soon as it starts, take aspirin (blood thinner) AND an antihistamine (reduce swelling). If you can catch this in the 20 minutes or so before the pain begins, you can usually bypass the entire 8 hours of agony in a dark room. What did they tell you at the hospital??

Beautiful cab, Helen, wow that blue really came out when you polished it up!
And you're welcome TByrd, I'm happy to be a part of it. There's something pretty magical (and addicting) about taking a 'rock' and create a polished cab from it!

Thanks guys:). I LOVE that little bit of coral on the top right... that's what 'makes' the cab, and I knew I wasn't going to touch it:). It's the coolest little orbitals too, I should get a side shot, looks like little orange flowers with green centers!
As for using preforms or small slabs, you'd have to ask DLC gems who's running the contest. Since I don't yet have a saw, I have to use little slab pieces too, so if that's what you mean, and not something someone else already shaped for you on a wheel, I don't see why not.

Ok, I'll put one out here and see how it goes. I ordered some bahia agates from shawn (rockshed) and asked if he could throw in a couple big enough to cab and he came through again. Theres not really a slab picture since its a slice of rock that holds it natural shape. This was also our first attempt at grinding and polishing both sides of a cab too. anyway here goes ..... This was right after cutting. This ones just to try to show the shine in sunlight Heres the final product shot 1 front Heres the final product shot 2 front back of cab (few fractures but held together ok) and heres one with sunshine coming through Thanks for looking, Chuck
