I'm going to play!!! Got this awesome Ocean Jasper slab from Ed (Stoner)! Here was the preform that I mapped out: My saw broke so I couldn't cut it out. Since this was the first piece of OJ I've done I started on the 180 and ground it out by hand. This stuff is pretty spectacular but good luck framing it, LOL! The orbs are paper thin. As I shaped and domed, orbs disappeared and new ones showed up! Here's the end result of this intriguing stone (3 different light pictures)! Inside: Outside: Inside on black leather: I think the black leather portrays the truest color. Outside the shine! Thanks for looking!

Thanks! If you look at the last picture, you'll see three fuzzy orange blotches. If I would have spent just a few minutes more then those would have popped out too. Problem is I didn't want to lose the cool bulls-eye ones that were already there. I don't know enough about this stone yet to know when to stop or keep on going, lol!

Okay, there hasn't been any action here in a couple of days - what gives? Anyone else up for the challenge? Yeah, it's gonna be another one of THOSE contests! Here is my entry into this free-for-all. First, the rough nodule (I sliced it into three pieces before I took the pic): The slabito: And the finished product - Oops, not so fast! Oh noooooooo!!! : Don't drop them, they break when they hit the concrete. I was fortunate I did not get any other damage/cracks to it. So a little rework, and good as (actually, I think better than) new: Someone was trying to tell me I should've taken that little sugary/drusy area out to start with. I was trying to save the banding, but this shape worked out better: Held up to let the light shine through. You can see the faint banding, and just a little of the drusy still remains in the upper right. Yes, that's the camera lens reflected off it. And lastly, the back side, just so you can see the pattern. I ran into the same dilemma as Susan ( EDIT - not Susan, Krystee! What was I thinking??? Sorry about that, Krystee!), as far as loosing/gaining pattern as the face was worked. When do you keep going, when do you stop? The back of the piece actually had a nicer pattern, but with it being right on the surface, I was going to lose it. So I opted to start with the opposite side, and cut into the pattern. I was going to wait until I had a definite ID of the stone to enter, but I just couldn't wait! Possibly sagenite in chalcedony from Turtle Mountains? There are so many awesome cabs this month, but that's okay. It's not about winning, it's about playing the game. May the best cab win! Jean

Jean that is a great looking cab love the pattern and you got a real nice shine. Love golden coloration around. Looks like the pattern is emerging out of a morning mist. Very earthy looking. You made a great recovery after the break also. This contest is getting better by the day. Stu

Jean, that's a wonderful piece and the composition that you teased out is fantabolous.
I absolutely adore the perfect girdle (is that what its called in a cab?) around the stone.

Thanks Pat, Stu, Bill and Kurt! I think I really do like the more oval shape (after the break), so it must've happened for a reason. I'm glad I was able to save it. I dropped it while I was taking pictures...
Kurt - yes, it's called the girdle. When I first started cabbing, I used to mark a line all the way around the stone for the upper edge of the girdle. Now I just eyeball it. You can get a pretty straight girdle when you use a flat lap, instead of a Genie or similar. I don't know how people can even see it on a wheeled machine!
How many entries are we up to now, I forgot to count? I say, the more the merrier. Everybody, keep 'em coming. Jean

Carleton, thanks for sponsoring this month's contest - you rock with an iron fist! (I don't know... just always wanted to say that) You rule!
Roy - Nice plume!
Stu - I'm a jasper phreak - your composition is outstanding, I can't see any better area for a snapshot than you found - aces!
Kurt - That might just be one of the coolest cabs I've ever seen - awesome!!!
Bill - that is one of the coolest pieces of rock - I love it. Reminds me of pet wood crossed with ocean jasper for color. Nice!
Krystee - Give us a chance would you!? Your cabs never ever dissapoint and that is one of the best (and you got me to pull out my oj now). You orb awesome!
Jean - You made my eyes pop out of my head - the girdle on that thing has me doing this --> <-- man alive! Looks like something I'd find in a high end jewelry catalog - I just can't say enough! Sagenite is one of those overcabbed materials (because it's easy to make look cool, right?) so I'm extra amazed that you got that to stand out beyond standing out. Da-ham!
And thanks to everyone who spared my entry a kind word - I'm grateful, and very humbled, to be able to share a contest with the like so of you all!
Damn Jean... damn damn ... oops, glide pad all slick now...
