Alright folks, here's the KCC for July 2012! I am pleased to announce that Carleton - www.labradoritesandgems.com will be sponsoring this month's contest and will be providing the winner with some of his beautiful material! Trust me folks, you'll want to get in on this one!Rules: Entries do not have to be started within the time frame of the contest, only finished by the deadline. All entires still require a photo of the slab, preform and finished cab. Remember, entries submitted to this contest must be unique to the RTH version of the Killer Cab Contest. I will monitor the other forum(s) for duplicate entries, and any duplicates will be disqualified. Entries are cabs only. Completed during this monthly contest period. Not cabs pulled from the drawer. We include a pic of the original slab, then a pic of the preform, and finally, the finished cab. Please try to remember at least a pic or two of the original slab and or preform. Feel free to share with us what ever you like about the mineral, and or what ever else you would like to share. You can enter any shape cab and your choice of mineral. Things like intarsias, carvings, jewelry, and composite type cabs can not be entered in an effort to keep the contest somewhat fair by just entering free form style cabs. Cabs posted here are only for the contest. Now get cabbing!

Beautiful cab Roy! Love that plume
sidebar - the background is wrong for this cab. It distracts from the awesomeness of the cab. I held my hand up to the screen to block out the background and the colors poped a little better. Just a thought - don't mean to step on yer toes

I, like others, are really uncomfortable with this personal vendetta that's going on. Stu's account was not deleted. It was temporarily disabled because someone who wants to make trouble for Stu went to Mark with wild accusations. Anyone with experience knows how a stone changes after grinding and different lighting. Tweaking photos is not against the rules. I speak for many others when I respectfully ask you to drop this and leave Stu alone. After all, this contest is supposed to be fun and not taken seriously. Please don't spoil it for the rest of us.

This is so totally rediculous. I specifically chose a stone that would not be judged by it's coloration. After all a stones color has nothing to do with the person who cabbed it unless the cab was cut by the hand of God. I have resently cabbed some very high grade material. Pieces who's cost for a single slab would greatly exceed the the retail cost of all of the slabs that I have ever won in the contests combined. I chose not to enter one of those because that would be like buying a win, and I felt that would be unfair. I do not have photo shop or any other photo editing software but I did darken the background of the picture because I wanted to hide all the pieces of hair and dust that was on the black felt background. I now see that doing so caused an area which was supposed to be orange to turn black. I guess I shot myself in the foot with that one. I think the cab would have looked better with the orange but then agaain I wasn't trying to alter the color of the stone I was trying to hide hair and dust on the felt background. Don, in response to your comment about I should have removed the scratches while I was at, it, let me clarify ,it, for you. I was not at anything and if I was at something I would have removed the scratches because unlike the color of a stone scratches in a cab would be a direct reflection on my level of perfedtion in rendering the finished cab. I suggest that you people not take this contest to seriously because in the end it seems as though people don't really vote on what they feel was technically the best cab but rather many people vote on what is thier favorite stone.
If you are all so concerned with coloration, why not remove coloration from the equation. After all color has nothing to do with the talent of the cabber. Why don't you just have all the entries posted in black and white and for that matter why not make all of the votes public. Lets see who voted for who. That way there would be no need for slanderous accusations.
As far as slanderous accusations all I will say is look at the source. If slander is not a reason to be banned from a forum it should be.

I just re read Helen's inflamatory and slanderous post. I didn't notice this in my first read. In her post she states that my account was disabled by the admin because I cheated on contests. People really need to choose their words more carefully. That statement is an outright lie. I have copies of PM's from both Sands and Mark pertaining to why my account was disabled. It ws not for cheating. This defamatory remark crossed the line.

Someone's definitely got a bug up her butt! If none of her previous posts was grounds for being banned, this one certainly is! (Wonder who sent her the PM that got her riled up? He should go, too.)

Don I am not sure what all of the technical terms that you are using actually mean but I am glad that your sarcasm was not directed at me. Stu Stu, my reply was a sarcastic response to Helen's baseless accusations. If you had gone through all the trouble to remove blemishes, hide defects, saturate colors, etc, why on gods green earth would you have left the scratch marks? After all, a simple swipe with a blur tool on each mark would make them fade from view, or the clone stamp tool to remove them completely. Any experienced lapidary could tell Helen that patterns change as the dome is formed on the cabochon, doubly true for stones with strong patterns and pictures. As for "photochopping", I always rotate, crop, un-sharp mask and histogram (level) my photos for a more professional look. I don't think there is any problem in doing so.

Is anybody else noticing the common denominator in all the arguments on the forum lately?
Someone has too much time on there hands. Need to spend more time cabbing and less time crabbing!

That does it Don, I am not going to cut another cab. Not until I get a good lighted magnifier. I am so embarrassed that these old eyes of mine missed all those scratches. I never would have entered this cab until they were removed (GROUND AWAY!)
Hey to all of you Texas boys. This might sound a bit off topic but not really. What do you think of the law firm of Baker Botts. Thats Baker as the former attorney general of the united states. My good friend and personal attorney is a sr partner.
