Scott I like the way you set up the voting! This should be the wsy all contests are voted on. No joining the crowd voting on a popular tumble or voting for a famous person etc!

Voted, I agree, I tried that with the cab contest although a lot of people shown dislike... Although the ones that show dislike never enter anyway. I may try it again as I find it hard to believe that most everyone votes on the same thing every time.

I find it hard to believe that most everyone votes on the same thing every time. Maybe that is because they are voting for what they consider the best piece and the "best piece" is obvious. Usually the top two or three get the lions share of the votes - because they are the best, not because everyone is simply voting for the same thing (whatever that means). If you can't see the votes already cast until you vote, how could the votes of others influence your vote? ****** Why can't we see the vote tally once we vote on this poll? Half the fun is seeing if your vote agrees with others. Heck, I won't even remember what I voted for by the time this ends! ETA: oh... it's checked! Still would like to see the votes cast once I have voted.

Wait a minute. these are real rocks from an amateur's tumbler? Oh my, they are beautifully gorgeous!! #9 is amazing. This gets me inspired to read the manual on my tumbler and get it plugged in.

I know you know everything already and don't welcome input from anyone especially me but yet I try. Step back and look at the totality of Scott's leadership in conceptualizing, creating, implementing, promoting, and managing this contest to an rousing success. There are solid foundational reasons why this contest is successful and nobody is complaining - except the captain - he complains about everything - but he means well My point is in a well run contest with strong open-minded leadership, providing a clear direction, it really doesn't matter who doesn't like what. The negative people will typically keep it to themselves in the face of success. If a contest is underwhelming and struggling with direction it opens the door to all kinds of input from negative people and also from well-meaning and constructive people.

I found out after I accidentally touched my vote and it disappeared along with the results. I could have changed it but I just revoted for the one that disappeared. Not sure if it can be set to not allow changes but then if you make a mistake.....could @shotgunner help fix it?

Yep, normal people tumbled these rocks. Reading your tumbler manual is not the way to get rocks to look like this though. Go back and read as much as you can on this site and then start asking questions. Your tumbler manual probably says to tumble the rocks in each stage for a set period of time. That might work for most stages, but not for the first stage. The first stage can take months. Your manual will say to run them for a week or two in the first stage. What you really need to do is run each rock for as long as it takes to look perfect before moving on to stage two. Now go do some reading and then come back and start asking questions.

I'm not sure if what I'm seeing is different from you but I voted - my vote still contains my check mark - and I can still change it. If I remove my check mark from the one I voted for and click on a different one my vote moves.

Tommy captbob was asking why can't we see the results after we vote. I was trying to point out that the vote could be changed after seeing the results then it wouldn't be as blind as @shotgunner is intending it to be. Andrea

Excellent advice above. I just joined this forum earlier this week and have spent hours reading through all of the threads. following other threads located elsewhere but still on the topic, got sidetracked on the second amendment discussion, trying to figure out where to start. I've downloaded a copy of the information posted by Shelby on tumbling. I'll study that in more detail later. Got thoroughly confused reading Kris Rowe's post on BLM rules and regulations. I thought I was just looking for pretty rocks and now I have to worry about claim jumping??? Holy Cow, I thought the Internal Revenue Code and Regulations were confusing! I have to spend more time re-reading Kris' post. Haven't gotten through everything yet but I will. I'm still in the initial stages of my due diligence.
I hope my assumption that this site is for amateurs as opposed to professionals (Professional being someone who does this as their principal occupation to earn a living) is still a valid one. If it isn't, then I don't qualify as a member and I'll go back to preparing tax returns and solving IRS problems.
In addition to Shelby's information what other books/manuals/guides, etc. is out there that I should read?
and the #9 stone in the competition was stunning. To paraphrase the Supreme Court Justice on the subject of pornography and apply it to "Beauty" I can't define it but I know it when I see it.

dehcpaYes, these folks are all just regular folks with hobby equipment in their sheds, basements and garages. They are patient and passionate. They/we are all avid experimenters and look for better results. "Better" being defined by each individual. Some try to speed the process. Some go for ultimate polish. All are here for one reason. Fun. It is a bunch of fun! And very rewarding. Read here, a lot. In the couple rock tumbling subforums. Follow guys like jamesp, Drummond Island Rocks and Jugglerguy whom all share their techniques, experiments and knowledge freely. Introduce yourself in the new guy forum, hang around and get to know us. A lot of really good people here. I know many of them personally from my travels. I vouch for them for sure!
