Eva and I just returned today from a wonderful nine day trip to southern Utah and other places. I want to do something fun and different with the trip report so I have a number of photos which will either serve as information or clues about our route or will be accompanied by clues to our route. A clue might be in the photos, in writing accompanying the photos, or in writing only. The point is that as the posts unfold I will be revealing clues as well as specific information about our route.
If anyone has "insider" information from Facebook posts etc. about our visited locations that haven't been revealed yet, please play but keep the big secrets safe.
Rules: Update posts will be made for the next 9 days or so, or until someone guesses the exact mileage from our odometer. Please make ONE guess after every update post that I make. This will be on the honor system, please police yourselves. At the end if nobody has guessed the exact mileage then I will take the closest guess without going over. In the event of a tie for the closest the persons involved will be informed they are tied for closest and asked to pick another number - order of picking will be the same as the original order of posting.
This is just for fun and a humble prize of a single, self-collected Utah agate rock from the Casto Canyon agate hill location. Nothing fancy just a rock that I found too pretty to resist and I'm sure someone will have fun cutting it.
Post #1 with several pictures will be made shortly.

I assume this is a Kit Williams's (is this reference too obscure?) type thing. Or, should we decipher collectively on this post?
I can think of 50 (I think I got that right) reasons why the highway is lonely but more why it's not.
Looks like a wonderful adventure.
I'll stay tuned,
Colin

Wild horses and all Duns. Them gotta be Kiger Mustangs from the Kiger Mtn range of Oregon. Doesn't make sense tho, sounds like out of the way to go from Cali to Utah.

Definitely did not go to Oregon but that would have been a great clue if I had known about it Only a badass cowboy would know about Kiger Mustangs These horses were part of a larger group mixed with other colors and we encountered them at our boondock camp just across the Utah border. Eva got this shot on her optical zoom digital camera - as soon as I get access to her other photos I'll throw in a few more horse pictures in an upcoming update post.

Awesome pictures & trip report. It looks like someone was extremely amazed by Bryce & would have made Kodak rich back in the day! Funny, just 2 days ago I was looking at Bryce Canyon via Google Earth. I was looking at that exact spot you photographed with the Navajo Loop trail sign. Today I went back to Google Earth to that spot & clicked the Streetview guy icon. Sure enough, you can walk that trail over the internet! It's only still images, and they're giving me some dead ends, but that could just be my computer. Lynn

Thsnx for the horse pics Tommy! 896 miles? You're welcome Bill! Those were some purty horses - and curious too. They came right up fairly close to us before we even knew they were there. Charley saw them before we did haha. You get one new guess each time I post a new update - we are on the third update so someone could have guessed three times by now. I'll stop the game and let everyone know if anyone guesses the exact number. Tommy

Post #4 - we'll call this "rock day" - I will rattle off locations visited and let you fill in the routes and update your guesses. Morning trip to Casto Canyon "agate hill" and surrounding washes. Found a LOT of so-so agate and let it lie. Collected a couple of colorful pieces that might be worth cutting. Drove down to Orderville to visit Joes and several other rock shops in town. Got directions from Joe's on where to find septarian nodules... searched where we were supposed to but there were none to be found. Based on the amount of serious heavy equipment in the area for scraping the walls I figure they keep the real locations to themselves and send the tourists on wild goose chases. Back on the road further south and west and through Zion National park. The scenery was really spectacular but we were not being touristy, we were headed for Springdale just past the park on the word of a local who told us they had a "wall of Tiffany." I didn't buy any of the premium stuff for obvious pricing reasons but I was able to pick up some decent Tiffany rough at $5 per pound from the yard outside. Should be able to make a few nice cabochons from I Hope. Charley was drooling over the polished septarians. Traffic through the tunnels in the park was really bad our first time through so on the advice of the rock shop guy we chose not to go back through the park but made a big loop out of it - southwest, north, east, and back to our campsite. Big thunderstorms were rocking the area which was also a thrill for us - we don't see much of that kind of thing in California This was our third night at the camp ground and tomorrow's update will start us traveling towards home via a couple of nights in a VERY warm location. Get your updated guesses in!
