awesome project. I applaud the amount of work you have put into that. Keep grinding till it is 8.595" diameter then any bowling ball pro shop can polish it!

Pyramids are easier. You will have a lifetime treasure. Impressive. Yes-thekingofrock. Looks like our Georgia pink granite. Georgia a world force in quarrying it. See images, 'Elberton Georgia granite' I understand you are using a respirator, are you grinding dry ? Diamond cups for roughing ? 4"-7"-9" ? Nevermind, I see your diamond cup in the photo. I think you're right about Georgia pink..inwould like to do a series of all domestic granites and marbles.. i really want to built a sphere machine for up to 12".. does anyone know what range of sizes you can do with a single machine? Yes, i have done it dry to this point. I plan to use 24g, 46g and 80g sic cups after the diamond cup and then I will start polishing wet with 200 grit and a wet polisher...i have super flexible backers that i am going to mount a cone behind it to create the contour of the stone for max footprint.

Chuck Thanks.. i really want to make it as close to 11" as possible. So far it is going well.. im concerned when i turn it over to shape the bottom side that i will lose the shape.. we will see.. fingers crossed.

Those are pretty neat.. I prefer korean ceramics and diamonds and japanese steel.. for the extra money, you get a lot more value than the chinese abrasives. Im going to turn custom cups to put behind my floppy backees to fit the diameter of this ine.. i will post pics..

I grind on a smaller scale and complain about variations in diamonds in sinterings for coarse removal. Guessing they are mostly China made. Never know how sharp till they are shipped and in hand. Agates are hard and need sharp diamonds and are rough on diamond sintering.

I went to that site. Those pads are convex for polishing concave surfaces.. theyvare good for bowls, but not balls...

I re looked at your images.
Perhaps it is depth perception limitations in images. But your piece looks taller than wide. Your hemisphere ends well above half way to the bottom? If that os true, then you have a large amount of material to remove too get the two halves to meet up properly.
I hope I am mistaken. I really want you to finish this!

Thanks guys..it is more of a personal challenge than anything, but im sure someone would like to have it.. its going to weigh almost 90 (estimated) pounds when its done. Polishing it without a sphere machine will be quite a challenge. I have the tools, lets see if I have the patience..lol As for polish? Your turntable, more of your supreme patience and sweat equity, plus a car buffer pad loaded with tin or aluminum oxide polish slurry. It will look wet!

Your turntable, more of your supreme patience and sweat equity, plus a car buffer pad loaded with tin or aluminum oxide polish slurry. It will look wet! It is almost exactly as tall as it is wide. I custom made a caliper and measured it tirelessly for square and dimension as i was cutting the rough form. The top half shown took me about 2 1/2 hours to make round from the geometric shape that it was prior. I have plenty of diamond polishing pads... many many of them. All spoils of war from my granite shop.. i also have compounds and granite polishing powder and all that is needed to whip this thing right into shape. I will post more pics when i resume the work.. right now my job is taking priority over fun.. pfft..
