Pardon me, but doesn't gofundme take a pretty good percent out? I'm assuming this is on that gofundme site. Would it not be better - money raising wise - to have donations go elsewhere to circumvent the fees? ETA: *doh* found it. Wow the price sure went up. Question stands about avoiding fees.

Your point is valid - yes it's expensive but in the interest of transparency when it comes to money I think it's best to keep it out on the open like this. Plus people frickin LOVE a big visible meter telling them how close to the goal we are ... If I could install one of those mercury thermometers to show how high we are getting I would in a heartbeat. At least they don't charge the donor which is good. That means the responsibility is mine - I'm OK with it but I might have to backtrack on the offer to accept Paypal unless people agree to send it to me as "friends and family."

However gofundme has name recognition and probably reaches a larger audience than Tommy's RTH fund.

Yeah, I knew about Paypal. That sucks. I routinely make donations to local drives. I would love it if they took paypal though. I'm so excited!! There is PayPal all over that website. They take PayPal? No?

I can vouch for Tommy's honesty. I sent my contribution via Paypal to Tommy last night. Within minutes it came up in the Go-Fund-Me- contributions link. Don

Only 6 donation in the past 22 hours. Damn people, don't you think RTH is worth saving & keeping in house ? I for one am disappointed in the response so far.

This is the problem with "crowdfunding" something like this. There's going to be a feeling of "you didn't do your part" for people who choose not to donate. You can say it's not going to happen, but I've seen it happen to other communities. Even if this forum is kept in house, you have no way to predict the future. If this group doesn't purchase the URL, who says the forum is going away?

Nobody said money had to be given in the first 24 hours. I know we're all excited to get a good start on it, but hang in there. I, and I'm sure others, plan on participating. I don't think this topic is going away anytime soon. No badgering, please.

I'm sure Tommy can close the deal with Mark before March 30th, if the purchase amount is reached before then.

He will be thinking: "$5k in 2 weeks!! Maybe we can see $6k or even $7k by end of march!! Woot!!" I suspect he will see that $5k is pie in the sky and the $2500 offer is most realistic. Time will tell.

There are several domain valuation tools out there. This one returns one of the highest $$$ results that I've looked at so far. I think $1500 for the admin keys to this forum is more than generous.

It pains me to see that certain of our members place such a low value on the tons of info contained in this forum. It makes me wonder if it's worth my time to continue sharing info and advice with people who need it. Guess I'll just lay back and see what happens. If the forum ends up in hands outside of the RTH family, you'll get exactly what you deserve.
Myself, At best I have 2 more years left on this earth. I worry about the future generations of rockhounds, and the knowledge they may be loosing. As for present members, many of you I care about. But there are some who already seem to know it all. Those I could care less about.
