Personally, I am not a fan of all the FB groups. They fill up your feed and some of the people are either really..... well I am trying to be a kind person, so I won't say it. Mind you, not all of them are that way, but I find myself leaving the groups more often than not, due to the "drama" that fills some of them. That being said, there are some amazing specimens on there as well and some seriously talented people. I have had more help here in the short time I've been a member here than I have had in months on FB. So far every single one of you have been very kind and patient with me and other than the joking that goes on, I have not seen any negative posts about other people. Thank you!!

I googled images for ideas for a homemade flat lap. Brought me to this forum. I'm a jeweller making rings and earrings and have taken to cutting my own gemstone rough. I started with lapis lazuli which as you probably know is fairly soft. Anyway I have some diamond gear in the form of a Lortone 8" arbor that I bought from a New Zealand supplier. It was made from mild steel and 5-6 years later it was rusting out. I now have a stainless steel version I had made up by a local fellow at a steel forming shop. My machine has a 8" Scott-Murray rubber drum each side of the centre drive pulley, and at the ends I have a saw and an end lap. Here it is: Now I want to make a flat lap. Move the whole setup to another bench, put that 8" end lap (or another flat master disc) onto a motor mounted under the bench. As for the motor I've seen a demo of a 3-phase motor driven by single phase power through a VFD which adds a lot of control: variable speed, soft start-ups and quick stops. Then I'll need a spindle extension to give me a 3/4" thread ... And a cake tin etc for the water drip. That's my current scheme.

I was originally looking for someone who would tumble some rocks I got. Then I thought maybe I could do it myself and wanted to checkout how difficult it is. I have always loved rocks.

Rockpickerforever told me about this site back in the day. Mr. and Mrs. Rockpicker were some of my first rockhounding friends. That has to be about 11 years ago now

Omg, just looked. I registered here in 2006, that's 11 years ago! I confess to moving over to Fb, but it's not the same. I miss this place. Met so many wonderful folks when I loaded my daughter and my beat up pick-up truck and headed to Burro Creek for a meet-up years ago. I think it was Stoner and Catmandew that helped this poor camping noob to set up her tent! I had the most fun ever, rockhounding for days, and meeting everyone.
I've been busy/stressed with life, but will be retiring after next year, and we're leaving here, and heading for Tucson! Hope to convince the hubby to take our new RV to Quartzite one of these years for that BBQ. And hopefully I'll have lots of time to play with rock and wire again, and a garage to try my hand at tumbling. And try to do some rockhounding again too.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

We are hobbyists. Tumbling grew into slabbing, cabbing, and silversmithing. Then a neighbor asked us to help liquidate her late father's lapidary collection. I stumbled into this wonderful site while trying to identify stones that I had never seen before. After about a year of lurking I decided to join up and be a little more sociable. Thanks to all for proving a friendly forum and tons of useful information!

I joined because google found an image posted by Sabre52 back in 2007 that matched a rock I was trying to ID. Unfortunately Sabre52 had little info on the rock as well. However, this is a good rescource for lapidary materials ID

I love rocks, especially agates. I live in Montana, and have collected quite a few prairie agates, but I have also been collecting surf polished agates from Oregon for years. My surf agates range from very rounded and naturally polished to quite rough. I have always meant to obtain a tumbler and try to enhance their beauty, but have not yet gotten the equipment. Now, I learn there is a choice between rotating and vibrating machines. More deliberation! Anyway, I am happy to have found this community, and look forward to participating.

I don't tumble, so I can't offer an opinion, but if you ask in the tumbling section, you'll get lots of advice and demands requests for pictures. Everyone loves pictures esp of prairie agates.

Found Idaho Rock Shop on the internet and saw Tony was a member, so I looked into this forum. Thought it must be great since Tony is such a great guy.
