I ordered a tumbler kit for my grand-daughter and started browsing to find out information and ideas. I came across this site and found it interesting and full of advice.
I decided to join, which in itself is rare, because I shun social media and keep a low profile on the web as a rule.
I'm now hooked and have placed my first order for rocks etc.
Next step.... searching for my own rocks.

Hi there! I came here a couple years ago looking for info on rock tumbling after I bought several slabettes/preforms - the start of a habit - and a vibe tumbler. I got a great welcome and a lot of help and encouragement. Really great community here. Then I moved, got a new phone neglected to install the app, and life happened so it has been a looong time since I've been here. But now I've started silversmithing and I'm still buying rocks and tumbling them and I'm back 😊 I really need to go back to the new member area and reintroduce myself...

Worked mostly with glass and Metals as a Hobby after retired, but had a lot of Lapidary equipment also, so joined a few rock groups to see what it was all about with serious people. Found article on FB abd came here and joined.

I'm totally intrigued by this new hobby (and I still have to start my first tumbling batch!). To avoid the most common newbie's mistakes, I surfed every web page that I found about this subject. After a while this forum came under my eyes... and I decided to stay.

I've picked up rocks since before I could talk. Many in our family do but I don't know to what extent. But I can't walk on the beach without returning home with a pocketful of rocks and everywhere I go, every different state I visit, I have to pick up some rocks.

I really relate to the funny sticker I saw here that said I Like Rocks with Like crossed out and Lick written in. I used to always lick rocks and so did my deceased uncle, Bud. He always told [those of us rock pickers] that when he was around 7-years-old he was on the beach (Lake Michigan?) picking up rocks. He found a very interesting rock that he proceeded to lick until he could see its true beauty. As was his habit, Bud licked it however many times it took until he decided whether to keep it or not. During this "decision process" an older man came along and saw that Bud was collecting rocks. This man was very excited to share a tip with Bud. He took the rock that Bud was looking at and licked it up just so and told Bud that he always licks rocks to see what they look like wet. Evidently, Bud did know that licking something after someone else wasn't a good idea because he remembered this story his entire life and related it in such a way that everyone laughed even after having heard it many times.

So I come from a long line of rock pickers but as I said, I don't know to what extent. I used my parents rock tumbler once and had mixed results but I didn't tumble like-rocks together. I had a little bit of everything in the barrel and didn't know what I was doing. My parents are gone now and I don't know who has the rock tumbler but I've decided to try again. Now that I'm living by Lake Michigan, I'm picking up rocks almost daily. I don't know much about them but love them regardless. I want to get a tumbler and start shining the rocks I have. I know I'll need advice and help and I was recommended to this site by www.mcrocks.com/images-2/KuziaPolishing.html when I did an internet search for Rotary vs. Vibrating tumblers. That will be my question for the group when I figure out where to ask. (freaked)

Welcome to RTH sharpen. You can post that question to the rock tumbling area and will get all the answers you need. The search bar may also be really helpful. Rotary vs vibrating has been discussed at length many times.

I love collecting minerals with my kids and showing my kids what the dirty rocks we picked up look like after we tumble them. I am looking forward to surfing through the threads and looking for information on tumblers and supplies to keep the barrels turning.
