Tried a 1.4 pound rock and it kept floating to the top. This 12 ounce rock stayed down in the stomach of the hopper, a Rio w/drusy cavities. No problem

That's a nice one! A lot of depth to it.

That's a nice one! A lot of depth to it. Good candidate for fillers. Some of the better mosses and sprays have those druzy pockets. i guess this one has layered curtains. Sabre52 could say.

I am always amazed at the patterns in some of the Moss Agate, the little half of a flower in the lower right of the first one, What in the world happened to form a half like that? The layered curtains are nice. I do notice that a lot of the vein moss I have collected over the years in West Texas has those same druzy pockets, they can mess up a pre-form shape if they end up too close to an edge. A larger pocket away from the edge can add to the finished product.
Wonder if the 1.4 pound rock would have stayed at the bottom if the 12 ounce rock wasn't down there?

Unconventional madness Ali. Always been a nerdy machine head and very competitive in a production engineering environment. I used to design locking systems on doors so my associates and the boss could not escape their office. Welded up machines to assist MMA fighters in their exercise routines, a sex machine(no comment), animal traps, cookers, you name it. Most were 'government jobs' requested by upper level corporate executives at the company I was employed at. Tumbling equipment lets me relive those type projects. Vibratory tumblers have been one of the most challenging endeavors ever. You speak way over my head. I am always impressed by people with the talent to build things and always impressed with people that have artistic talent. You combine both. As far as the vibratory tumblers, you might just end up with something way better than what's on the market and make a small fortune.
(and I am very proud of myself for not making a comment on the above no comment subject)

My former primary care doctor had been a mechanical engineer working at a nuclear power plant before he went to med school. The last I talked to him, he said he was bored with medicine and was contemplating another career change. He has what I call an "engineer's brain". Couldn't stand to have an unsolved puzzle. I had a lot of fun with that!

My boss had a trophy wife. I guess he wanted some variety in his life. I had to be secretive about it's function. Guessing he got a rise out of it ho ho. Engineers need to be creative or move on to another career. Gotta have creativity, mandatory in that field. We are a weird bunch. Usually not people oriented. Half are psycho. Great serial killers lol. We also get used and once the company is done with you they schitt can you. So my self employment route. The salesman make all the money. Not in Japan, engineers rule over there(a tiny but powerful world force). US is more sales oriented. That's OK, I'll engineer for myself. (got an attitude about this subject) As a matter of fact we get discriminated against for knowing stuff. That's why I became a cracker jack welder; the iron workers I managed called me college boy till they saw me weld. Their teasing made me learn. I used to tell the new guys "do as I do and not as I say". It pays dividends for a manger to know the employee's job as good as he does. It's only fair. They welded me into a foundation of a machine one time and left me there for hours. I snuck up behind the ring leader of that stunt and got him in a head lock while I sucked a hickie on his neck for the wife to see. I almost got fired, wife showed up at work and she did NOT believe my story. They left me alone after that. I know a few engineers- fall into that way too smart for your own good category. To say you all are a little odd is an understatement. I always say the smarter they are the weirder they are. One of my friends became a welder ( don't knock being a welder, that's another talent), plus he is a part-time firefighter and an EMT. He is always tinkering with stuff, building stuff, trying to improve stuff and I swear he cannot sit still for 2 seconds. Always looking for something to do. Gets bored easily.
I sent my friend one time a project to build that has to do with nerve cell research. he built a prototype in 3 days, sent it to the M.D., got paid $300.00 for his time and materials. The doc took his idea and is still ignoring all emails and calls from him. Got screwed, but cant do much about it. That is hilarious about the hickey-would of loved to have seen that.
As far as the bosses project------ really?? We all need variety, but to have something built? Don't they have things for that already???

I also know an orthopaedic surgeon that was a mechanical engineer that got tired of his job so went back to med school.

@alikat, I graduated at the low 'C' zone and us C students got the highest paying jobs. We noticed at the recruiting lines that the 'A' students were getting the lower paying research jobs. Again, it is all about sales and management. But you all have to get along w/people or you are doomed. "Why suffer from insanity, take pride in it" <monster laughing> I have seen inventions stolen from many of my engineer friends. Hate to see your friend get stiffed. Designer should insist on at least a tiny percentage royalty. Now the lawyers get involved... My best engineer friend FINALLY put his foot down after 40 years of brilliant designs and demanded a royalty or else he hits the road. He made many a company many a fortune. shame My boss, let's just say he needed a bit of a spring to keep up w/his apparently hungary younger companion. <imagination drifting> I told him not to send the prototype, but he didn't listen (MEN)...*Sigh. It was a lesson learned from him. As far as getting along with people, well sometimes I even struggle with that. I have very low tolerance for stupidity (lack of common sense) *
My boss, let's just say he needed a bit of a spring to keep up w/his apparently hungary younger companion. <imagination drifting>.......HUH?? Now i'll be trying to figure that one out all day-Thanks

"I told him not to send the prototype, but he didn't listen (MEN)..." Stubborn, men ? Naw, no way MsAli. Tolerance for those lacking OK if being paid. Paid well in fact. Easier if they can't help it. If they are just plain lazy then aggravating to nth. I went out rummaging in the industrial district. More accurately dumpster diving. Can't believe I found the exact pipe I was looking for. I knocked on the door of the business and verified it was garbage, explained and perplexed the fellow telling him it's for a rock tumbler. Gave him a handful of tumbles and left him with a smile. Said pipe about 5 feet long.

Solved the regurgitation of the large rock in the small Mini Sonic barrel. By screening agate/quartz media to 1/4 inch size it created more of a 'quick sand' environment. The big rock sank into the small media as if water. Could be compared to high viscosity/low viscosity. Bigger media defends a big rock sinking in. Little media allows it to sink in. If the media was sand the big rock would sink in with no effort. Immediately. Just like quick sand. So MsAli. That red rock just got sunk in the vibe. Should be polished in 3 days...make that Thursday. So I have a date w/the vibe Thursday. The other section of the vibe has this giant sapphire worth 16 million: April 2015

Interesting-I am assuming this would not occur in a tumbler? Or would it just get "stuck" to one side? Well we are going to find out with George *I am excited about your date-I hope she treats you well and big red comes out looking pretty ; ) As far as the Sapphire *are you shitting us (oops, I will wash my mouth out later)? Looks like pretty blue glass.

Looks like pretty blue glass. Lesson learned about big rocks. Smaller media is needed in a rotary or a vibe to avoid jamming if big rock is about 80% of the width of the barrel or hopper. In the case of a vibe with an 80% big rock the media pushes it to the top IF the media is too big. If the media was tiny like sand the big rock sinks right into the hopper like quick sand. If you shove your hand into a vibe with larger rocks and large media it resists your hand. If you do the same with little pea sized media then your hand falls in, almost drawn in. That sapphire may be a pipe dream. May be hard to get a polish on a big chunk of (yes) glass. It is beneficial to tell blatant lies at times. Can be stimulating. Check to see if people are paying attention... Looking forward to George the Big Rock. May the 3 pound rotary turn into a giant killer. The more big rocks I tumble the more I find that a barrel just big enough to roll it is best.

Well I for one am thankful for you passing the lessons on to us and I hope it challenges others to throw those big rock in The "Sapphire" will be interesting to see if you can accomplish the mission of getting a polish on it-I wouldn't see why you wouldn't though George is going in Saturday-I am too curious to see what happens, so my batch will be coming out and set aside. Either that or dammit, I am going to spend $ and just buy myself another present-hhhhmmmm, just got my work bonus.

Pick some of your favorite tumbles you have in process. There is a good chance that you can add them in with George. As long as George does not jam in the small barrel you are OK. Was curious if you were going to abort that batch lol. I won my own bet. Probably should have been a profiler. People with small ears and blue Volkswagens are often serial killers. lol. How do they do that.
