Those are easy, melted scrap chunks from the glass blower Allison. Virtually a throw away glass as far as fuse artists are concerned since it does not fuse polish well. No need for fuse polishing if the nappers are going to nap it. Hard as a brick bat(Mom used to say that). About my head. What is a brick bat ? A brickbat was a brick used as a weapon Stuff it into a sock and beat someone with it I can see where these would appeal to the ladies and agree with Robin that they would make killer pendants alikat218,hmmm, brickbat huh? I never knew the correct term for it, I just calls it my "rock in a sock" and take one whenever I travel. The rock is a colorful 2 inch ironstone ball and the sock is a leg stocking. Clears customs and all the x-ray equipment since its just an old rock and a sock. But drop the ball in the sock and swing it and its lethal, will smash teeth, break neck and collar bones, dislocate fingers, pulverize knee caps, crush noses and with the right trajectory will in-bed the nose into the brain. And, if you only have the one shot on, aim for the top of the head. It will crack a skull just like an egg. Folks will never mess with you ever again. The folks in my neighborhood carry one around with them just in case they run across any coyotes. uhrahhh. Cheers, johnw

Very familiar with the damage it can do Learned that from a old chief petty officer one night in Subic Bay Ahhh memories and a story for another day

Yes, glass makes good spheres. Polishes easily in 20-30 minutes on the sphere machine. I will look for stick of 3 to 4 inch stainless pipe. Must ry a 3 or 4 inch square.

Temperature would complicate matters Lee. Commercial glass must use pressure or vacuum because the have no bubbles. I have little knowledge of machine blown glass. I dug into the bubble pressure situation. A) plate glass is easy. Let the molten glass waterfall in a thin layer on a sea of liquid tin. All bubbles escape before cooling. B) block and chunks with bubbles seem to be full of water. This H 2O is released chemically. C) pressure from tumbling obsidian/glass seems to be from the same reasons. So the bubbles are basically generated by steam from some reaction ?

A wide spectrum of what is pretty for one is ugly to another. Now you need to build a new saw with stacked blades to slice up a brick in a single pass. Same principle we used for the lath mill. Cut 6 pieces of lath at once. 4 blades. Bet you could build one. Would there be more waste cutting this way? Being the bricks are square they get clamped together and sawn 4 at a time. and the saw can be ran with full speed feed since the glass is soft. Easy saw, it feeds and cuts off automatically. It is next to my work area so I can tinker and reset the next cut easily.

I love seeing the creations from the knappers. Must say that is the pinnacle of my glass involvement so far. They are chomping at the bit to get to the glass. Like knocking the door down.

As is a couple foot long blackberry cane an inch+ in diameter with enough stickers removed for a handhold.

Why not take off the narrow flutes first? Narrow, then wide around it, then do the back side, then finish with the edges?
Taking Flakes off the Core or "Mother Stone."
Hand Flaking
Jig Flaking
Compound Jig Flaking.

1daveThat explains a lot about edge flutes. Still looks like risky biz. Pinnacle of stone work there. One of the nappers ran 5.5" flutes up BOTH sides of a 6 inch point not 1/4 inch different in length. Jaw dropping. By the way, those napping guys are all over me in acceleration mode. I am setting some goals. I want a minimum of a thousand points made out of me glass in 2019. Hopefully 10X that amount. And to become premier art glass supplier to the napping community. How better to display my craft ? And it is utilized as a medium in a much higher art/skill form. Doesn't get much more flattering than that. The glass blower and his apprentice took their glass blowing education at Kent State. I did rather well in the basement learning(simpler) fusion methods making 1000's of pendants. A 6 month cram course at 1/100th the cost of Kent State !

A most likely result! I can see the nappers wanting full bricks to take off their own blades one flake at a time as per the first video. Why not build your own fluting jig as per the last video, but modify a better clamping system? Then you could sell individual blades to beginners.

Perhaps you will end up with a napping man cave out back to keep glass splinters away from the house.

He needs a "self cleaning Floor," Step outside for safety. press the self cleaning button. The floor swings down into the basement dumping all the shards, bangs back and forth several times to be sure, then the hydraulics snap the floor back into place for the next session.

A basement would have to be the first floor of a two story home with the Salt River raging from time to time. What are the chances of getting you to share some photos of those curious "Hanging Tongue Caves" all over the Papago Buttes?
