Got parents out of Myrtle Beach and back here in central texas. They still didnt want to leave however when we showed up, they finally came around. First day was right at 16 hours of driving, today was 8. No fun, but we're back safe and sound.
Glad you got them out of there. Better safe than sorry.

Good to hear you all are safe. Property can always be replaced -- humans, not so much.

In 2016, Charleston saw 50 days of tidal flooding. Fifty years ago? Just four days.
Wilmington had 84 days of high-tide flooding in 2016, according to NOAA.

I have family in the path that I just found out they didnt evacuate. Dont understand thier choice. Just praying they will all be ok.
I hope they prepared well and are hunkered down and safe.
I've had the weather channel on all day. It's like watching a train wreck -- you just can't look away. My sister's brother-in-law and his family are in North Carolina. I don't think they evacuated either.

I hope they are safe as well. It's horrible watching it, I cant imagine being there.

Pat Robertson saved us again. Nothing much happened here. Thank goodness.
Good news! There's still lots of this thing left, but it looks like you guys dodged the bullet as it went more south.
Everyone else in the area, please report in when you can.

Speaking of the Weather Channel is it just me or are these folks making fools of themselves? I understand they feel the need to get folks to take it seriously, I really do, but holy smokes the over the top dramatization is really grating on my nerves. Right now there's reporter standing on the beach talking about blowing sand hurting her face. If I'm a mile inland I'm thinking I evacuated for this shit? I think their coverage of the last few hurricanes has transcended the actual events and become a must-watch TV show - like they waited and prepared all year for the big "live event" around-the-clock broadcast.
How many more times are folks going to believe the "storm of a lifetime" is upon them only to hear a giant fizzling sound instead?
Am I wrong? Please lay it on me heavy if I am, I can take it.

I guess it's better to play it up and have it fizzle, then to underestimate and have people caught with their pants down. Nobody will listen the next time, especially those that left, and then had their homes looted while they were unprotected.
I totally agree! It has become the newest "reality TV series" and people with nothing better to do will sit in front of the boob tube for days on end, watching the media make asses out of themselves.
If anything, those "meteorologists" (and I use the term loosely) out in the weather, by their actions, are encouraging people to go out and get a first hand look. "See, it's not so bad, I'm out here, aren't I?"

The news in general is nothing but a National Enquirer. I dont watch it. Haven't in years. My cousin in Willmington N.C. checked in this morning. No power, generator was holding up, but now they have lost that. She said it is pretty wicked outside. Have not heard from my other cousins yet

People went out in their boats to watch the hurricane. That didn't work out too well.

I don't watch the mainstream news either. I'm talking specifically about The Weather Channel and how far over the top dramatic they've gone. They are in prime position to be an actual severe weather information source if they would pull back and focus on relaying actual information from the NWS and local governing bodies - instead they have turned it into a perverted "reality TV series" (as Jean said) where their people are forced to use drama voices to talk about anything and everything they can think of just to fill in time.
Hope your family is safe - it would suck if their local boat dock was rocking in the swells...

I agree about the over dramatization. rockjunquie I have NOAA bookmarked, too.
The Weather Channel is actually replaying moments in a montage after commercials to make it seem more catastrophic than it is. The storm petered out quite a bit, so now they have to try to make it look like it's way stronger than it is. I stopped watching The Weather Channel pretty much years ago. I turn it on to see what's happening if there's something that's going on someplace where I have family or friends. It's off my TV now because they're acting like buffoons.

Not to downplay the true victims of the storm- and I'm sure there will be more than a few- but, it was at a Cat 1. We have Nor 'easters way more wicked. I have survived so many 1s and 2s in my life staying put where I am - either in VA or in Fl. Cat 1 and 2 is really pretty mild. Now, a 3 or 4 - I would leave. When we were watching Florence as a 4 coming this way, that was a different story. I didn't listen the hype but followed the NOAA updates. Those that didn't, panicked. They caused gas, food, water and hotel shortages as well as clogged up the roads. This place was chaos and we barely had a downpour. I never believe the hype. I remember too well the reporters at the beach sending in their bogus stories and trick photography. Nope, I listen to local radio updates and look at NOAA. We have a really, really great local station for news.
Virginia Beach is actually a highly populated sprawling suburban/city. They called for evacuations early on and had only 2 schools open for evacuees. THAT is criminal. Heads will roll at the gov level here. Things were NOT done well. Had there been a real emergency people would have been in trouble. I remember one storm when we had to vacate. The shelter was a huge conference center at the beach (3 blocks from it). The building had HUGE glass walls on the 2 outside corridor walls. They were bowing in the wind. Who's bright idea was THAT? The Red Cross was there. They were charging for coffee and donuts. What the hell? No thanks. I never left home again. Shelters are awful. My only fear here is a huge oak in the yard and in every one around me. They have weathered a lot of storms. But, the one next door literally came apart and half of it split and landed within inches of my bedroom wall where my bed was. I was sleeping and never heard it. In the morning, I was sh*tting bricks and took a video. Amazing that it missed us. I am ever mindful to count my blessings and that was one such time.
Nor 'Easters here are terrifying. There is an area in Norfolk called Willighby Spit. It is a spit of land that was created by a Nor 'Easter. It's all built up now as it is a finger of a peninsula with lots of summer homes. Every storm does major damage. I'm waiting for the next Nor'Easter to take it out. My daughter lived there a while and almost bought a house till a storm scared the Jesus outta her. Her entire basement/first floor and all of her property was many feet under water. We had a double Nor'Easter blizzard come through one winter. Probably the worst storm or the top 3 I've been through.
I think the news is downright criminal. All these folks get all worked up and then when nothing happens they ignore stocking up their hurricane boxes and ignore the warnings the next time. One of these days we WILL get hit by the real deal and everyone will be caught with their pants down.
I was looking at some storm spotter info. Storm spotters, EMS, Noaa, ham radio operators are all the best sources for info. Storm spotters have access to advanced RADAR and other info that is very cool and more accurate. They also have to complete training in how to interpret the images and data.
Hoping that everyone here and their loved ones remain safe.
