“The initial analysis showed that, throughout the life cycle of Mangkhut, the maximum sustained winds near the centre once reached 250 kilometres per hour,” Li Ping-wah, a senior science officer, said. The Observatory’s track information showed the record-breaking wind speed was recorded at 2am on Saturday, when Mangkhut had made landfall in the northern Luzon region of the Philippines. By the time the storm reached Hong Kong, the wind had dropped to 175km/h (109mph). www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/health-environment/article/2164523/its-official-typhoon-mangkhut-was-most-intense
Around 5 AM AST (0900 UTC), hurricane force winds were reported in Vieques and the eastern half of mainland Puerto Rico. At approximately 615 AM AST (1015 UTC), Maria made landfall in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico as a strong category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph. www.weather.gov/sju/maria2017

Exit, stage left ! Pat Robertson makes like Snagglepuss and he’s got the cartoon to prove it. Heavens to Murgatroyd. OK, I have to ask... have you lived in this area? Him praying away the hurricanes is a huge joke in these parts. I didn't know other people had heard of it unless they had been here.

Corolla beach is just south of Virginia Beach. We have wild horses on the beach at False Cape Park/Back Bay (extreme southern VA/Va Bch). You can get real close to them. They are part of the Corolla herd. I had some pictures of them, but now I can't find them on my computer.

Some of NC’s wild horses weathered Florence fine. Others still aren’t accounted for yet.
At least three of North Carolina’s wild horse herds are safe and accounted for, according to the organizations that oversee and care for them.
While the Corolla, Rachel Carson Reserve and Cedar Island herds weathered Florence fine and are getting back to normal, the condition of the Shackleford Banks herd is still uncertain . . .
“Unlike other herds which are located in places which make assessment relatively easy, the Shackleford herd is located on an uninhabited barrier island within a National Seashore only accessible by boat.”
“Cape Lookout, adjacent to Shackleford Banks, took an unofficial landfall, and bore the brunt of the strongest winds for hours upon hours.”
About 30 horses have been spotted so far, Poindexter said, “and all appeared to be healthy and acting normally.” But a formal survey of the entire herd isn’t possible yet. There are 118 horses in the Shackleford herd, Poindexter told the N&O.

When an EPA official told her the government would pay for her to move to a motel Tuesday night, Bullard-Mimms said she asked why.
“I said, ‘There seems to be some urgency to get me out of this house tonight. Am I reading you correctly?’ And he said, ‘Yes.’ “

Not to downplay the true victims of the storm- and I'm sure there will be more than a few- but, it was at a Cat 1. Also not wanting to downplay the losses suffered, but it wasn't even a hurricane when it hit the shore.

Much like Harvey here in southeast Texas last year, Florence was a Rain event due to the slow movement once ashore. Except for damage on the immediate coastal areas due to any storm surge, the slow moving storm dropped an enormous amount of rain that overwhelmed flood control measures. Unlike North Carolina, the Houston area is flat land so the flood waters are generally slow rising giving folks time to get away. That kind of rain over any area with greater elevation changes make for a much deadly situation.
Most of the wind issues inland are from trees getting blown over due to the water saturated soil.
