If there is anything on the inside (I really don't think there's going to be...but I hope I'm wrong! LOL), then I'll post those pics in your Fairburn thread on Friday. I have several other pics to post there anyway. Please do! I haven't been able to get out and hound much. You're holding back on us, aren't you? 😁 LOL. I wish! It's the pieces from the auction that I slabbed. Some surprises...some disappointments... se la vie...

That is such beautiful scenery you have out there. I'd probably get too distracted by everything around to focus on the rocks. Much respect to those who find anything with fortifications with so much else to see!

Much respect to those who find anything with fortifications with so much else to see! Today I did something I haven't done for a very long time. I sat down at the top of one of those hillsides and just took a break from hounding. I just needed to take some time to take it all in and be grateful for being able to go hounding in places like this pretty much whenever I want. When this location is only 27 miles from my driveway, it makes it a whole lot easier to get out. I just felt like I needed to take some time today and thank God/the Universe for ALL of this - and to truly be appreciative of the true wonder of this place! (Believe you me, with that many rocks to look at, it becomes an exercise in sensory overload after awhile! LOL)

Beautiful scenery shots, Jason! It's beautiful. Fingers crossed on the maybe Fairburn.
Whenever you go hounding, take some packing tape with you. If you have another encounter with a cactus, use the tape to pull out the needles. Works a treat!

Thanks Robin! I really do love that spot. It's about 5 miles into the Buttes. Most people don't go that far back in...but I think it's well worth the extra effort getting there. I actually did know about the tape trick...but didn't have any with me. So, I sat on my rump with my pocket knife for a good ten minutes trying to get all the "tiny" ones out. I got all but a couple. Tomorrow I'll put a bandaid on with good old Bag Balm and let that draw them out! LOL I hope that one does have something on the inside...but those fortifications look like they're surface only. However, maybe there will be a nice surprise. Hopefully I can cut it tomorrow.

However, maybe there will be a nice surprise. Hopefully I can cut it tomorrow. If they are the fine needles like prickly pear, scrubbing with a handful of sand does wonders. Works for fiberglass too. Most of the irritation comes from the above-the-skin portion of the needles brushing against Stu, causing pressure on the embedded part. That’ll take care of most of it. Bag balm might then accelerate your body expelling what’s left, which is really a very small part.

I’m new to the forum but have enjoyed hounding for years. Was at the ohv area last weekend and had a few hours so looked on the hillsides mainly on the side of the parking lot and outhouse where the campers typically park.
I did venture across the road and up the hillside for a couple miles. Was unsure how the road was and ran short on time so didn’t get to really explore. I was a bit worried about driving the truck up to the top of that steep gravel hillside by myself and didn’t have time to walk it first. Next time however!
I did see a couple old guys in a stock 1/2 ton go up and over so I take it the road must be fairly decent for a ways back there.
Would really like to camp there as I enjoy the peace and quiet as much as the rock hounding!
Will shoot for an overnight trip in a few weeks if possible, maybe even find a agate!

begeberg - Nice to hear you're finding some good stuff out there! Make sure there's ZERO potential for overnight rain if you camp out there...you'll be stuck for days! LOL I have a Ford Ranger and take it clear back to the furthest points at both the East Buttes and the West Buttes. I just pop it into 4-wheel drive as soon as I get to either gate, and have no issues. I did go too early once last summer when the roads were still wet...they were a almost too greasy. I don't like tearing the roads up, so I don't like to go when the roads are wet at all. It's a gorgeous place to lose yourself for many many hours!

Any idea if it fills up with folks partaking in the rally? Kind of like a quieter place to sleep, my rowdy days are long past.

No hook ups at the Buttes...and one of the only place to really park a camper/tent is right next to the dirt bike area. So, not sure how "quiet" it would be for you. The noise would mostly be during the day. Oh yeah. There is a spot just before the dirt bike area (on the east side of the main road) that I've seen a couple campers parked. It would be a little better...although it's further away from the "outhouse". There's no way it fills up there. There's got to be bikes around there though...it's a camping spot...and it's the Rally. LOL I also asked in the Fairburn thread: Where are you out of? Edit...saw your answer over there...

I just have my bed setup in my truck as it has a topper so pretty easy for me to “camp” anywhere. I use a MSR stove to cook on so pretty minimal
It is nice to have the toilet fairly close by however. Both Railroad Buttes and French Creek have that going for it.
Too lazy to haul out the Thetford port a potti!

LOL With that setup, there is a spot that is past the French Creek campground...maybe a mile. It's a "turn around" right on the edge of the Grasslands border to the east. A truck could be parked there overnight pretty easily too. If both are too packed, get ahold of me. We can always find you a spot to park.

Fun times out agate hunting. Spent a night at French Creek and a night at Railroad Buttes with my kids. Walked around a bit picking up some rocks of various kinds. A couple of the Prairie Agates??? Came right off the big hill.

Came right off the big hill. Nice selection of material! Are you going to tumble them, or slab and cab, or leave them in their natural state? Not too bad weather for camping...how were the crowds?

Not sure. I have a rock tumbler but have never used it. All the rocks and crystals I’ve collected over the years are left natural just the way I’ve found them.
I am interested however in the best way to polish them for a deep shine. Suggestions?
Crowds were sparse as only a few of the Harley crowd campers showed up. Evidently a tent camper at French Creek who was at the rally Friday evening came back to find her cooler had been relieved of its contents. Rained a bit Friday evening so we watched movies in the back of the truck. The Creek was almost bone dry still and the trails were as well even after the rain! Was shocked as I piled rocks in the Creek last time to make a nice pool for a dip on those 100 degree days.
Saw a couple guys come and rock hound at the top of the Railroad Butte hill above the parking lot. Found two agates right there on my morning walk so was pleased for that!
At some point I want to get on the East side of the 160th Ave OHV area and explore. Just wasn’t sure how road 503 or 505 is for a 3/4 ton 4 WD truck. I do have 34 inch tires and rear locker so it’s pretty off road capable but tend to be concerned more about its size on some trails. Next time I head out there would enjoy connecting with some one who’s knowledgeable of the that area.

The ones with fractures or odd shapes take forever to tumble, so sometimes I've shaped them with the saw to speed up the tumbling. I've been pretty much all over the east and west buttes with my little purple Ford Ranger. I do put it in four wheel drive because it makes it easier to get up some of the hills there at Railroad Buttes. I'm also familiar with a lot of Fairburn, but I have access to some private property so I go to those places frequently down in that area, as well as the actual Grasslands. Next time you come out, give me a buzz. I'd be more than happy to go out with you. If nothing else, I'm good for comic relief! LOL
