Here it is before and after 36 hours of bleach. Think I like the before version better, maybe abit too long in the bleach. Now you have me all curious about how deep the bleach has altered the color, I guess a light grind and/or polish would tell.

Maybe I will go do that!

I took it bck to the shop, I first sanded with 400 grit to remove polish, It took some of the bleach effect off, but not much, so I went to 100 grit. It was removing the bleach effect off and I got to the point where I liked it, so I just repolished it. I could have gotten rid of all of it but I didn't want to rebleach it. in the photo of the two photos, the top is after bleaching and the bottom one is af4teer sanding and repolishing.

Thanks for explaining woodman . Interesting, and nice you have a little control over how much of it you want to keep. Patty

I went to a customer's house today to measure her house for flooring. She had a TON of petrified wood out in her yard. I should have taken pics of them...but I was preoccupied getting pics of her 14" saw she's wanting to get rid of! LOL

Some small pieces of Stinking Water Oak I polished today! I've cabbed a bunch of different Pet Wood types. Some with really bad results...but one of the best I've worked was Stinking Water Oak! Great grain patterns, great growth rings...and no pits or fractures in the piece I worked! Gorgeous material!!

I love seeing results in this thread. Such variety and so many different colors and patterns!! These are the first two flats I ever put on my Lortone vibra lap. Mostly I was just messing around and these were two of the smoothest flats I had. I'm pretty happy other than the fractures but I'm aiming for big improvement. I have another large piece of this in my shop that's untouched that I want to cut so badly but if it's fractured it'll break my heart The larger piece is really, really shiny in person and quite heavy (about 4 pounds). Even with the fracture lines I really like it. The smaller piece has a great shine but that rough spot (ground off a nub in a mad rush ) bugs the crap out of me. I'll be putting it back on the machine this week to get rid of that. Two questions I have - I have no dea what kind of wood this is, anyone know? and B) How to do you photograph shiny specimens without major shadows? The second picture really doesn't do it justice but I never claimed to be a photographer.

Got the first cut made on the Saddle Mountain piece. Some people call it Bog and some Forest floor. I don't care which is correct, I just call it Saddle Mountain Wood. It is fractured a bit, think I will glue a piece of plywood to the face to help hold it together while cutting. may cut it a a bit thick to help it stay together.
