Was over at a customer's house the other day. Saw this and HAD to get a picture! Supposedly this is from here in South Dakota...but I've never seen anything like it!! It appears to be opalized... That is gorgeous!

That is gorgeous! No kidding, right!?!? My jaw dropped when I saw it. They have it kind of behind a little bush...so it isn't readily seen...but I spotted it right away! LOL I'm going to post some more pictures of some petrified wood...hopefully tomorrow. My boss was wanting to "get rid" of the petrified wood he had along his driveway. It's nothing like this...but also unlike anything else I've seen from this area!! So...I snagged it...like a ton of gorgeous pieces!!

Jasoninsd, that wood needs to be over at your house! There's a couple little pieces that came off the log. I couldn't even convince her to cough those up! LOL

These are so cool! You shall check with your boss from time to time if there is anything else they want to throw away...

Thanks for the pics. The second picture (wet) looks like AZ rainbow wood to me. Those are the right colors for it.

Already showed this when I “revealed” it, but since it’s my only pet wood so far…. Arizona rainbow wood, maybe? Big slab, 1” thick, but tons of fractures.

Jason, I've seen a fair bit of wood with that mysterious feature and I'm confident it's where a crack had filled with chalcedony/opal and later the piece fell apart leaving the layer on one side. I see this a lot with stromatolites also.

This a couple of macro shots of a piece of wood I found this past summer in Central Oregon. It looks like the log was pretty rotten before it filled in with calcedony. Got to rip cut a bigger piece of it.
